German minister to Iran: it's never too late to negotiate with Israel

Germany's foreign minister appealed to Iran's leaders to make credible assurances that it is not seeking a nuclear weapon and to show it is willing to find a negotiated solution as fears mount of further military escalation between Iran and Israel. 'We are still ready to negotiate a solution. However, Iran must act urgently ... it is never too late to come to the negotiating table if one comes with sincere intentions,' Johann Wadephul said at a news conference with his Jordanian counterpart on Wednesday. Wadephul said Israel's fear that Iran would develop nuclear weapons was justified and it had a right to self-defense. 'The Israeli decision to do something against this threat is comprehensible,' he said, adding civilian deaths on both sides were regrettable after air attacks between Iran and Israel. His ministry was arranging special flights later on Wednesday and on Thursday to each repatriate about 180 German citizens via Amman, he said. Wadephul also said Germany had agreed to create an economic council with Syria to improve cooperation and boost prosperity and stability there.

Southeast Asian nations scramble to get citizens out as Iran-Israel conflict escalates

Southeast Asian nations are urging the evacuation of their citizens from Iran and Israel as the air war escalates, with Malaysia warning of 'rapidly deteriorating conditions' and Thailand preparing to bring back tens of thousands of migrant labourers from Israeli farms and factories. Thousands of Iranians have fled the capital of Tehran this week, since Israel launched strikes that have killed more than 220 people, mostly civilians. Two dozen have been killed in retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli territory. The escalating hostilities have triggered fears they could spill over into a regional conflict that threatens global security and potentially chokes off a crucial supply route for crude oil and gas from the Middle East Malaysia 's foreign ministry said that all those registered with its embassy in Iran were safe, but warned that the situation 'remains highly volatile and may worsen without warning'. Smoke rises in Tehran on Tuesday as the Israel-Iran air war continues. Photo: Social Media/Reuters

China, Central Asian countries agree better connectivity by land, flights

BEIJING (Reuters) -China and Central Asian countries are willing to improve road and railway connectivity, and will look to open more direct flights to and from China as they agreed to enhance exchanges, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. China will look at simplifying visa procedures with the five Central Asian countries while all parties will study the feasibility of opening consular offices, it added. China, together with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, will also accelerate the modernisation of existing port facilities and look at the need for new ports. Chinese President Xi Jinping signed on Tuesday a treaty to elevate ties with Central Asian nations as Beijing looks to further deepen cooperation on trade, energy and infrastructure with the resource-rich region.

Japan says it may evacuate its citizens from Iran as soon as Thursday

The Japanese embassy in Iran said on Tuesday it was considering evacuating Japanese nationals by transporting them by bus to a neighboring country, as the Israel-Iran air war raged for a fifth straight day. "This could be carried out as early as Thursday, June 19," the embassy said on the foreign ministry's website. Earlier, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said the government was looking into various options for evacuating Japanese citizens, and the foreign ministry issued an evacuation advisory for Japanese nationals in Iran.
