Costco ax 'GOAT' food court item sparking fury from shoppers

Costco fans are still mourning the loss of the beloved cinnamon sugar churros a year after they vanished quietly. The churros were a $1 fan-favorite treat pulled at the start of the pandemic. Fans rejoiced when they were brought back in 2021 at $1.49 — only to be axed again in 2024. Shoppers are still fuming over the removal of the 'GOAT' item — especially after Costco replaced the crunchy classic with a dense, 8,000-calorie chocolate chunk cookie for $2.50. 'Those cookies are awful and crazy high-end calories. The churro was amazing. I will die on this hill,' a Reddit user wrote in a post. 'The cookies replacing churros is the worst thing that costco has done since changing the berry smoothie recipe,' another shopper commented. The churro controversy is just the latest in a string of food court shake-ups that have enraged longtime members, including Costco's controversial Pepsi for Coca-Cola swap. Fans are still bitter over the death of the combo pizza. Others are baffled why Asian Costco food courts offer sushi, bulgogi bakes, and clam chowder—while U.S. locations struggle to hold onto basics. 'Costco has been disappointing me so much lately. Churro gone replaced by 8,000 calories cookie. Combo pizza gone while Asia Costcos get sushi and clam chowder and bulgogi bake,' a Reddit user wrote. American shoppers were also jealous at the debut of a California Crab Roll only in Canada. Social media users were thrilled to learn about the return of its hot turkey and provolone sandwich, until they heard about the price hike to $6.99 from $3.99. Besides food, Costco decided to introduce a new Frozen Strawberry Lemonade at select US locations. The $2.99 beverage was spotted at food courts in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, and Michigan. The drink was described as an 'overpoweringly sweet' beverage by social media users who were disappointed it replaced Costco's Strawberry Banana Smoothie. The one thing that will likely never go away is Costco's famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo, which were not including in customers' food court price hike claims. When Costco isn't busy with its food court shakeups, its competing with rivals like Walmart and Sam's Club. Several Reddit users trashed the Double Chocolate Chunk Cookie that replaced the Churros last year One of Costco's latest projects is a standalone gas station in California to be opened in the spring of 2026. The gas station news comes months after Walmart announced its plans to open 40 to 45 fuel station convenience stores. Costco has opted not to axe all self-checkout machines, unlike Sam's Club, which is currently rolling out AI-powered 'Scan & Go' technology. However, it has been aggressively working on a membership crackdown and implemented controversial rules before hiking its membership fees. While the chain recently lost its top wholesale store title and were affected by tariffs, it's continued to maintain financial success.

Costco customers campaign for return of beloved $1 treat despite new food court offerings

Print Close By Andrea Margolis Published June 19, 2025 Costco's been rolling out plenty of new food court offerings this summer – but many of the wholesaler's most loyal fans are longing for an old favorite. A recent discussion on Reddit focused on the long-gone $1 churro at Costco. This particular social media community is home to over 1.3 million Costco customers. Costco has served churros on and off throughout the years. The treat fell of the food court menu in early 2024 to make way for the viral Double Chocolate Chunk Cookie. At the time, it sold for $1.49. FIRST DAY AT COSTCO FOOD COURT ALMOST SENDS NEW HIRE RUNNING FOR THE DOOR The recent Reddit post about the churro garnered some 5,500 likes, with over 300 members chiming in. "Who misses the churro????" the original Reddit poster wrote. "I miss the churro. When they were fresh and crisp, they were great," one person said. "Although neither compares to [the] toasted almond ice cream bar." A different user wrote, "Us big ol' women down in San Antonio miss them." SWEET DECEPTION? LOYAL CUSTOMERS ACCUSE ICONIC DESSERT CHAIN OF 'SHRINKFLATION' Other commenters praised the original churro but said it changed for the worse after the 1990s. "Churro was good until they changed the recipe and then it sucked," one Redditor wrote. Another reminisced, "I miss the churro from the '90s. The one pictured was no bueno." But some customers were unimpressed by the cinnamon-and-sugar dessert and called for the pre-churro pretzel offering. "Reminder: The pretzels that the churro replaced were so much better," a customer said. "I will complain about them replacing the pretzel with the churro until the day I die." A different user wrote, "I will complain about them replacing the pretzel with the churro until the day I die." A possible reason the churro hasn't been brought back may be the treat's low price tag. This summer, Costco announced it would bring back its combo pizza – but in a slightly different form. Priced at $6.99, the "Combo Calzone" is stuffed with pepperoni, sausage, cheese, onions, peppers, olives and mushrooms. Costco also recently began selling a frozen strawberry lemonade drink in its food courts. The drink, made with real fruit and no artificial flavors or colors, costs $2.99 and is said to contain only 250 calories. But the drink has received mixed reviews from the wholesaler's members. Costco's Newest Product Is Generating Tons Of Mixed Reviews — Here's My Brutally Honest Opinion After Trying It

Costco has a knack for spotting a food trend the moment it tips from niche to mainstream and then rolling out a tray that feeds half the neighborhood. The Chicken Street Tacos showed up just as weeknight taco trucks became a thing. A Frozen Strawberry Lemonade slid into the food court the second every drive-thru debuted its slushy version. Now the warehouse has set its sights on birria — the slow-braised, chile-rich beef you dunk in consommé until your fingertips match the sunset. The online buzz was mixed before I even unboxed it. On TikTok, @yungfoodbeast shows off a dramatic cheese pull and calls the tacos 'fire." While @photogami (aka The Sushi Guy) takes a more hands-on approach, he dips each taco in the consommé for extra moisture, sets them in a lightly oiled skillet, then presses and flips until the tortillas pick up that deep-orange quesabirria crust and the cheese melts right back where it belongs. He's into the beef, tender, well-seasoned — no complaints there. But he still raises an eyebrow at the total price, skillet success or not. I found the tray right next to the Chicken Street Tacos, and it drew a small crowd the moment I paused for a photo. Sydney Martin One shopper even tapped my shoulder to see if I'd tried it yet. Field research nearly turned into a jump scare, but her curiosity told me everything about the aisle's vibe: cautious excitement and a little sticker shock. Before I committed, I zoomed in on the shelf tag: Birria Taco Meal Kit — $6.49 per pound, eight tacos, Jack cheese, corn tortillas, Spanish-style rice, plus a cup of consommé. Sydney Martin Costco doesn't hide the math, but that per-pound price can feel friendly until you realize the tray weighs almost four pounds, which puts you north of $25 the moment it lands in your cart. Credit where it's due: The packaging team makes this feel like a true crowd-pleaser. Still, I found myself doing the quiet Costco math in my head, wondering whether this was a clever illusion or a genuine bulk bargain. Sticker shock continued at home, so out came the scale. The kit weighs 3.89 pounds. All eight tacos together weigh just under two pounds. Sydney Martin My camera had trouble capturing the digital scale numbers, but the official weight was 28.30 ounces. When I opened one and weighed only the filling, it was roughly two ounces. Add it up, and you're looking at a total of about a pound of beef. Sydney Martin The rest of the weight is 17 ounces of consommé, 15.9 ounces of Spanish-style rice, and two lime wedges. Sydney Martin In dollars, roughly $11.50 pays for the tacos; the remaining $13-plus covers broth, rice, and citrus. Suddenly $6.49 a pound feels less friendly. Cooking was by the book: tacos straight on a sheet pan (I skipped parchment — poor choice) at 375°F for 20 minutes. Halfway through, white rivers of cheese were already bonding to the pan. Sydney Martin While the tacos baked, the consommé warmed on the stove, and the rice took a quick two-minute spin in the microwave. Sydney Martin Taste time. The beef? Tender, well-seasoned, still juicy after the oven stint, and excellent once dunked in the broth. The tortillas? Dry going in, tough coming out. A skillet crisp could help, but that's not what the box asks for. The consommé is flavorful, warm, and lightly spicy, but realizing seven of my dollars floated away in that pot dampens the glow. The rice lands squarely in the filler category: dry, lightly seasoned, and easy to ignore once the tacos disappear. Then there's the Chicken Street Taco comparison. That tray costs about $15, makes a dozen tacos, and throws in slaw, salsa, and crema, which works out to roughly $1.25 a taco. The birria kit costs north of three dollars per taco, offers fewer servings, and arrives without extras. Feed more than three hungry people, and eight tacos vanish in a blink. Sydney Martin Verdict: flavorful filling and chewy shells, but a premium price. If Costco softens the tortillas or trims a few dollars, I'll happily buy it again. Until then, the Chicken Street Tacos stay in the cart, and real birria cravings will send me to my favorite truck. Have you tried Costco's birria kit? Did the tortillas break your heart, or am I underselling them? Drop your thoughts in the comments! Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye on the prepared-foods case (and that price tag) to see whether this tray sticks around or drifts off when the next trend rolls in. Got a serious craving for tacos now? First day at Costco food court almost sends new hire running for the door

When it comes to the service industry, there may be no busier place at any given time than a Costco food court. One Reddit user's recent post recalled his first day on the job and how he wanted to quit. Reddit user "Ok-Development4027" shared his experience on a page dedicated to conversations about Costco. "First day working at Costco food court I want to quit," he titled a post that quickly received more than 1,000 comments and counting. The 21-year-old employee said he attended an orientation that "went smooth[ly]" the day before his Friday shift. When it came time to work his first shift from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., he admitted that he thought the 8-hour schedule, which included a 30-minute break, "was already a lot for my first day, but I brushed it off." He quickly realized he was "in for a ride" once he started. The new food court employee noted that the customer flow "was steady since the morning, then later in the day it got worse and worse." He said he wasn't sure what his role was. By 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., he said, he "wanted to walk out" because "it was nonstop hectic." He compared himself to "a zoo animal being watched by all the customers on the inside as I try to move as fast as I can." The novice employee pointed out that there's "like a whole pizza being sold every 2 minutes and I think I might quit." He went on to say that he wasn't sure what his role was – "they tell me I'm a closer, yet I was [there] in the morning doing prep stuff." "Nonetheless, it was extremely overwhelming for my first day [there] and it might be it." Commenters were mostly encouraging, telling him that things would get better and to stick with it. "Jobs can often be overwhelming the first few days," one person wrote. "Roll with it the best you can and by next week you'll be a pro. You got this." "Some jobs aren't for everyone." "Just remember that EVERYONE there, especially the hiring manager, wants you to make it and become a superstar," another user remarked. Other users, however, said it's OK to quit. "Agree – but if you hate it in 3 weeks, give your notice and find one that works," wrote one person. "And some jobs aren't for everyone," said another commenter. "Perfectly fine if this dude wants to go find a new job." One commenter who claimed to have once worked as a Costco food court manager didn't seem surprised by the employee's story. "We'd hire three [people] at a time," the person wrote. "There was always one [who] would quit by the end of the first week." For more Lifestyle articles, visit The employee, who wrote in an update that it "just felt like it was never going to end," revealed in the comments a few days later that this was his "first intense food service job," but he eventually felt more comfortable working behind the counter. "I ended up staying and feel like I'm getting better and the hang of it." Fox News Digital reached out to Costco and Ok-Development4027 for further comment.

Diner shocked at being charged S$15.80 for prawn noodles; additional S$3 each for fish cake and vegetables

SINGAPORE: A Facebook user was shocked at the price he was charged for a bowl of prawn noodles, especially since he had to pay extra for the vegetables and fish cake that were included in the dish. ' Dun (don't) eat prawn noodle at Vivo City Food Republic… Doesn't come with veg n fish cake and it costs S$3 each to be included… This is ridiculous!!!' wrote the Facebook user, who goes by Charles Charles, in a Jun 7 (Saturday) post. He posted a screenshot of the receipt for his meal, which showed that he was charged S$15.80 for the prawn noodles, and then an additional S$3 each for vegetables and fish cake, for a total of S$21.80. The post has been widely commented on and shared more than 20 times. The post author commented that he would be willing to pay the price of the prawn noodle dish, given that the food court's clientele is mostly tourists. He felt the additional charge for the vegetables and fish cake was unreasonable. Another agreed, calling the price ' daylight robbery,' and one chimed in to say that it should have included the dish's other components. Prawn noodles in Singapore range in price from S$5 to S$12, depending on the size of the dish, the number of prawns, and the toppings. While the main components of the dish are prawns, broth, and noodles, it can also include thin slices of pork, fish cakes, bean sprouts, leafy greens, fried shallots, and a hard-boiled egg. A commenter joked, ' Store name really gives us Xia Yi TIAO,' which in Chinese translates 'be startled' or 'to jump in fright.' The phrase is commonly used to describe being suddenly startled. Another told Charles Charles that he could get less expensive prawn noodles elsewhere. 'Just go to Kovan, after MRT, walk straight to the hawker centre, don't enter, walk left, walk all the way, and turn right 90°, walk a few steps, and you'll see the coffee shop diagonally opposite Yen Can Bake. Got a coffee shop that sells prawn mee soup, very nice. It's closed on the first Monday of the month. $5.50 for 4 prawns, no fish cake or others. Nice, like my cooking style.' The Independent Singapore has contacted the post author and Food Republic Singapore for further comments or updates. /TISG Read also: Man gets 'shock of his life' after being charged $10.80 for cai fan at Food Republic
