This divisive 90s shoe trend is back for summer – and this is the pair to wear
Flip flops have officially been given the fashion seal of approval. From smooth leather iterations to jelly styles and classic Havaianas', the sandal style is just as likely to be seen in the city as they are at the beach this season. Minimalist luxury fashion label The Row led the charge last year with its 'beach flip flop' style, plumped for by the likes of Kylie and Kendall Jenner and Zoe Kravitz. Don't be fooled by the name, as these flip flops aren't seen anywhere near the sea. In fact, The Row's newest take for this season is aptly named the 'city flip flop' (£860, But you don't need to spend that eye-watering amount on the style; Ancient Greek Sandals were next with the Saionara jelly sandal (£125, worn by influencers including Lucy Williams and Lizzy Hadfield. The jelly material and pop of colour playfully nod to the Nineties. A more budget way to embrace the trend, the classic flip flop brand Havaianas is officially cool again, thanks to recent collaborations with Zara, Dolce & Gabbana and Gigi Hadid. Of course, the trend isn't for everyone. Some might look on with horror at exposed feet on the commute, while getting your toes out in the office is a divisive topic among colleagues. I cast my own reservations aside to road test the best flip flops to invest in this season – and one pair has shaped up to be my sandal of the season. Perfectly minimalist but sufficiently stylish thanks to the sleek red finish, Russell & Bromley's radford style is a hero investment. At £125, the flats are a more premium choice on the high street, but feel far less flimsy than many leather or faux leather takes. Here's my case for why you should invest too. How we tested I tested these Russell & Bromley flip flops alongside dozens of other pairs from the high street. Considering comfort, styling versatility, value-for-money and aesthetic, here's why I keep returning to the radford style. 12 best flip flops to nail this summer's minimalist shoe trend
Once reserved for beach holidays, the humble flip flop has had a makeover for summer 2025. From stylish leather iterations and chunky silhouettes to jelly materials and thong heels, the latest flip flops are just as wearable in the city as they are at the seaside. Riding the Y2K revival, the flip flop had a moment in the sun a few years ago when chunky silhouettes and platform soles were the fashion fixation. The latest revival nods to the Nineties, with barely-there styles, leather fabrics and summer-ready shades. Poster girls from the decade like Caroline Basset Kennedy and Jennifer Aniston styled theirs with straight leg jeans or slip dresses, while designers like Calvin Klein and Jean Paul Gaultier even sent flip flops down the runway. But we have The Row to thank for the humble flip flop's return to fashion royalty. Everyone from Kendall Jenner to Zoe Kravitz has worn the luxury fashion label's Ginza or rubber styles, styling with a summer dress or tailored trousers. Equally minimalist but far more in budget, Havaianas are having a renaissance (yes, the rubber sandals from your childhood family holidays). Trending styles can barely stay in stock after Gigi Hadid collaborated with the brand. Completing your summer capsule wardrobe, slimline flip flops are the perfect minimalist complement to an oversized shirt, wide-leg linen trousers or maxi sun dress. All that's left to do is book a pedicure. How we tested From affordable high street takes to investment pairs, I've tried and tested the best flip flops to invest in this summer and beyond. Whether it's an everyday staple, a practical beach pair or elevated style for evening attire, I wore these flip flops on holiday, in the city, to smart events and even on a dog walk. Considering cost-per-wear, aesthetic, quality, and, of course, comfort, these are the best flip flops to invest in right now. I Saw Gigi Hadid Wearing a Mini Dress and Flip-Flops, So I Bought a Mini Dress and Flip-Flops
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Flip-flops are a polarizing shoe choice. I'll give you that. But, no matter where you fall in the footwear debate (hate to love 'em, love to hate 'em), the flip-flops trend is back in a big way. Gigi Hadid is just the latest celeb to sport the style—add Jennifer Aniston and her go-to $50 pair to that list too—and, TBH, she's convincing me to let my own dawgs out as well.$20.00 at The supermodel was spotted in NYC Wednesday night heading into Soho's Altro Paradiso to celebrate her new Havaianas collab. Naturally, she sported the rubber sandals for the occasion. Hadid styled her flip-flops with an embellished tweed Marc Jacobs mini dress—which is already sold out, I checked—and a vibrant beaded Staud Timmy Bag for the most unexpected high-low look that, somehow, totally worked. She even paired the beachy elevated 'fit with beaded jewelry and bright yellow nails that matched her shoes to a T. Gigi's Top Flip-Flops aren't a style or color from her actual collab (we'll get to those in a min), but the shoe is arguably the brand's most iconic design. It features Havaianas' signature rubber sole and tonal logo with a monochrome shade, whether you go for Hadid's bright yellow hue or one of the other many options. The material is slip-resistant and waterproof, making them ideal for a poolside hang—or, in Gigi's case, a rainy NYC day—while the sandal also features a v comfy cushioned footbed. Shoppers can attest to this, too. One says the flip-flops are "never a fail" even after "20+ years," and another adds that they're "the best quality footwear" they've ever tried. "They are firm and thick, which means your feet don't get blistered and sore," the reviewer says. "I have loved my Havaianas since I first discovered them many decades ago," a customer writes. "I always use them at home and on the beach. Love their many colors and the fact that they make my feet feel free." As for Hadid's collab with Havaianas, the new global brand ambassador unveiled her co-designed collection in March. The line features retro-inspired silhouettes and shades that really capture her effortless style. "Whether it's my shorts to go to volleyball practice, or jeans to go get a smoothie, or a dress, it feels like me to put on Havaianas," Hadid told Elle earlier this spring. She added that the brand is "iconic for a reason."$26.00 at at at at My two cents? If Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Aniston are both onboard with flip-flops, so am I. Gigi Hadid Puts California Girl Aesthetic Into Havaianas Collaboration
Gigi Hadid x Havaianas Collab: NYC Launch Event Fun fact: When flip flops were invented and patented by Havaianas in 1962, the rubberized shoes were perfect for the South American country's beach lifestyle (hello, The Girl from Ipanema). Its design was based on the Japanese Nori shoe, which was made from straw. Over 60 years later, the easy-to-wear shoes once associated with Brazil's poorer working class have become the de rigueur summer sandals. (Photo by TheStewartofNY/GC Images) Helping to elevate these humble and affordable shoes has been a slew of brand collaborations that range from Dolce & Gabbana, Manolo Blahnik, and Valentino to Saint Laurent and Disney. Celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Arizona Muse, and Barbie Ferreira have also teamed up to create capsule collections. For summer 2025, the Brazilian brand has teamed up with Supermodel and Havaianas brand ambassador Gigi Hadid, who has infused styles with a 'California Dreamin" vibe. More Launch Event Hadid creative directed the six-style capsule collection infused with sunset-inspired prints and color scheme—think orange, pink, and blues ombré effects—on the brand's Top and Slim Square style flip flops that infuse the squishy sandals with a dose of fashion. To promote the offering, which launches in the US in June, a photo campaign that channels a 1940s/50s pin-up vibe and features the self-proclaimed flip-flop lounging in a hammock at a Hollywood set-worthy beach. To celebrate, the Brazil-founded rubber sandal maker threw a party in downtown Manhattan, attempting to bring the beach to the city with a rooftop fete at Altro Paradiso in Soho. The party channeled the sandy coasts of Rio de Janeiro, complete with palm leaves, tropical flowers, branded coconut shells, pearlized seashell cocktail glasses, customized anklets by Susan Alexandra's charm collection, and a sunset-infused orange glow everywhere. The trendy eatery's vast rooftop boasts a beautiful west-side Manhattan sunset, and the aim was to give guests such as Olivia Palermo and Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele a front-row view. However, this being New York lately, the weather had another plan. The rain was non-stop on party day. Thus, the event was moved inside. This didn't stop Hadid from turning it out in a charming Marc Jacobs cream dress with chunky jewel accents and a 50s bob hairdo while sporting the orange color of the sandals. After all, every New Yorker knows that in a summer rain, the de facto shoe is a rubber flip-flop, preferably Havaianas.
