Dutch footballer Promes extradited over cocaine smuggling case

Promes is on his way back to the Netherlands (Kirill KUDRYAVTSEV) Former Ajax and Dutch international footballer Quincy Promes has been extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands, prosecutors said Friday, after a conviction for smuggling more than a tonne of cocaine. A Dutch court sentenced the former winger in February 2024 to six years behind bars, finding him guilty of helping to smuggle 1,363 kilogrammes (3,000 pounds) of cocaine from Brazil in 2020. Advertisement In a separate case, the 33-year-old had already been sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay compensation for stabbing his cousin over a stolen necklace. An appeal is ongoing in both cases. A spokeswoman for prosecutors confirmed to AFP local media reports that Promes was on his way to the Netherlands after the extradition. Promes was arrested in Dubai in March 2024 but Dutch prosecutors said that was for a local offence unrelated to the cases in the Netherlands. He won 50 caps for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals, and was part of the side that lost to the Czech Republic in the last 16 of the Euro 2020 championships, which was played in 2021 due to Covid. Advertisement He has not worn the orange jersey since. In 2019, Promes joined Dutch giants Ajax in Amsterdam, after a 15-million-euro ($17.2 million) transfer from Spanish La Liga outfit Sevilla. In 2021, he left the Dutch capital for Moscow and has played for Spartak ever since, following a previous stint from 2014-2018, during which he was named Russia's footballer of the year. ric/jm

Robber who stole Hermes bags in Hong Kong caught in Thailand, to be extradited

A robber who fled to Thailand after allegedly stealing 11 pre-owned Hermes bags and a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace worth nearly HK$3 million (US$382,170) in total has been caught and will be extradited to Hong Kong, the Post has learned. The robbery happened on Wednesday afternoon, with the heavyset suspect entering the premises in Tsim Sha Tsui, rendering a staff member unconscious and tying her up before escaping with the items, according to a source. The Post learned that the man had fled to Thailand after the robbery but was later apprehended and would be sent back to Hong Kong on Thursday. The source earlier said that a 42-year-old female staff member had opened the store at 9.30am and the suspect, who was wearing a black hat, glasses and a black face mask, entered and asked about a white Hermes handbag. After claiming he had to leave to withdraw cash, the man returned at around 12.10pm and bought the bag. He told the staff member he wished to stay in the store to browse some more, but suddenly covered the victim's face with a small towel, causing her to lose consciousness.

Sean McGovern changes legal team in challenge to extradition on murder and criminal organisation charges

Sean McGovern, who has challenged the legality of his extradition from the United Arab Emirates to face charges of murder and directing a criminal organisation, has made an application to change his legal team. At the Special Criminal Court on Wednesday, legal representatives for McGovern said that Michael Staines solicitors wished to withdraw from the case, with the accused to now be represented by Wayne Kenny solicitors. Advertisement Via video link from prison, McGovern confirmed that he was happy with this application, with Ms Justice Karen O'Connor putting the matter back for mention to July 28th next. The accused is to be produced in court on that date. McGovern (39), with a previous address at Kildare Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12 is charged with the murder of Noel Kirwan on December 22nd, 2016, at St Ronan's Drive, Clondalkin in Dublin. He is also charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the same murder between October 20th, 2016, and December 22nd, 2016. He is charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the surveillance of James Gately in preparation for the commission of an indictable offence between October 17th, 2015, and April 6th, 2017. Advertisement Another charge alleges that between October 20th and December 22nd, 2016, he contributed to or participated in activity intending or being reckless as to whether such activity would facilitate a criminal organisation in the murder of Mr Kirwan. He faces a similar charge of facilitating a criminal organisation in a conspiracy to murder James Gately. He was previously extradited from the United Arab Emirates to face the charges, but in June, lawyers for McGovern raised a concern about the legality of his extradition to Ireland. Olan Callanan BL said: "The fundamental concern is the legality, the propriety and the process which surrounded his arrival in Dublin."
