Hilton plans to triple its hotel presence in Africa
Hilton plans to significantly expand its hotel presence across Africa, aiming to operate over 160 hotels in the coming years. This growth involves opening more than 100 new properties across key African markets including Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Angola, and Madagascar. The expansion is expected to support the continent's growing hospitality industry and create approximately 18,000 new jobs. The hotel group recently entered Angola with three signed properties: Hilton Luanda Hotel Godinho, Hilton Garden Inn Luanda Airport, and DoubleTree by Hilton Cabinda Futila Residences. These hotels will offer a range of amenities such as beachfront locations, meeting spaces, restaurants, and leisure facilities. Hilton's entry into Benin is marked by the upcoming Hilton Cotonou, positioned strategically near government offices and embassies to boost business and tourism opportunities. In Madagascar, Hilton will open two hotels in the capital city Antananarivo: a Hilton property and a Hilton Garden Inn. Both are designed to cater to business and leisure travellers with extensive meeting rooms and fitness facilities. Nigeria will see the introduction of Hilton Lagos Ikeja, Hilton Garden Inn Kano, and The Wave Hotel Abuja Jabi from Hilton's Curio Collection, adding to the country's hospitality offerings in business and residential districts. Hilton's expansion strategy places a strong emphasis on employment, with current recruitment efforts already underway for 600 positions across Africa. The projected 18,000 new jobs will span hospitality roles and related sectors, supporting local economies. Several developments are located near major airports, business districts, and government hubs to leverage business travel demand and event hosting capabilities. The group also plans to integrate its loyalty programme, Hilton Honors, across all properties to enhance customer engagement. Later this year, Hilton is set to debut in Ghana with the Hilton Accra Cantonments hotel, featuring over 140 rooms, dining venues, event spaces, and wellness facilities. In North Africa, the portfolio will grow substantially, with multiple new hotels planned in Egypt, Morocco, and a DoubleTree property in the historic city of Fes. Almost a Third of Eurozone's U.S. Trade Surplus Is Due to U.S. Firms, Says ECB
Almost a third of the eurozone's goods trade surplus with the U.S. is accounted for by sales of products manufactured by the affiliates of American businesses, which also account for most of the eurozone's deficit in the trade in services, the European Central Bank said Friday. In its latest Economic Bulletin, economists at the central bank said that should the activities carried out by those affiliates be moved back to the U.S. in response to higher tariffs or changes to U.S. tax policy, the eurozone economy would be smaller, but the impact on employment and incomes would likely be limited.

Employment and Labour Committee Welcomes Presentations on 2025-2030 Strategic Plans for Department and Entities
The Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour has welcomed presentations on the 2025-2030 strategic plans, 2025/26 annual performance plans and budget estimates of the Department of Employment and Labour, Supported Employment Enterprises (SEE), Productivity South Africa (PSA), the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC). The committee is of the view that more resources are needed to adequately fund the department and its entities. More resources are needed to increase the department's inspection and enforcement capacity, to fund SEE's procurement initiatives and the employment of persons living with disabilities in line with United Nations' conventions, to address the CCMA's case backlog, and to fund NEDLAC's mandate of facilitating national dialogue, among other things. The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Boyce Maneli, said that the contribution of SEE, CCMA and NEDLAC to the country's economic growth cannot be overstated. 'An inclusive growth of the economy requires that there be a harmonious work environment, and the CCMA is best placed as an arbiter. Greater participation of everyone in the economy [is also required], including persons living with disabilities, and SEE is best placed to facilitate that aspect; and continuous facilitation of national dialogue, which is a mandate of NEDLAC,' said Mr Maneli. To this end, the committee has called on the department to provide in writing the various creative measures that will be implemented to cover budget shortfalls. Mr Maneli said that while legislative review may be needed to motivate budget increases for some aspects, the committee will work within the current legislative framework around budget process to get possible increases through the Money Bills Amendment Procedure and Related Matters process in future financial years. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to hold regional youth conference in Senegal from the 1st to 3rd of July, 2025
From the 1st to 3rd of July 2025, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will be holding its Regional Youth Forum in Saly Portudal, Senegal, under the theme: 'Engaging ECOWAS for a new vision of youth'. This high-level meeting will bring together young leaders, representatives of youth organisations, political decision-makers and regional and international experts. It will provide an inclusive platform for dialogue on the challenges and opportunities facing young people in the ECOWAS region, particularly in the areas of employment, entrepreneurship, education and vocational training. The conference is part of the celebrations marking the fiftieth anniversary of ECOWAS, and marks an essential stage in the regional organisation's determination to strengthen the active participation of young people in building a peaceful, integrated and prosperous West Africa. They illustrate the ambition to forge a new regional vision, placing young people at the heart of social, economic and political transformation. The main objective of this initiative is to create a space for direct dialogue between young people and ECOWAS, in order to harmonise points of view on the issues faced by young people in the region, and to co-construct concrete solutions to encourage their socio-economic development and civic participation. The Saly meeting is the culmination of a series of pilot national consultations organised in several West African capitals, including Cotonou (Benin), Accra (Ghana), Yamoussoukro (Côte d'Ivoire) and Dakar (Senegal). These consultations laid the foundations for a participatory and regional process, of which the regional meetings are the concrete expression. Through this initiative, ECOWAS is reaffirming its commitment to developing innovative strategies and defining shared priorities to strengthen the involvement of young people in local, national and regional governance. This conference reflects this vision, considering young people not only as beneficiaries, but also as key players in the development of the region. Organised under the coordination of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSDC), the conclusions of this conference will feed into the development of a strategic roadmap, in line with ECOWAS Vision 2050, and will lay the foundations for a new regional policy dedicated to youth. On this day in 2024: pledge of support after Woodsmith Project cuts
On this day in 2024, the York Press reported that York and North Yorkshire local government representatives had pledged to help staff made redundant by cuts to a planned £7bn fertiliser mine. The move followed Anglo American's announcement of its intention to "slow the development" of the Woodsmith Project mine, which had been due to open near Sneaton, south of Whitby, in 2027. As reported at the time, more than 2000 people, including contractors, had been working on the scheme, but the number was expected to be cut to 900, including contractors, within the ensuing 12 months. James Farrar, interim head of paid services at York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, said at the time: "The announcement surrounding the future of Anglo American's Woodsmith Project is understandably of concern to the many staff, and associated businesses, which depend on the long-term viability of the site. "The mine is a major regional employer, drawing its workforce from Scarborough, Whitby, and other nearby rural and urban areas. "While York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority is disappointed to learn of Anglo American's decision to slow development at the Woodsmith Project, we consider the mine integral to our economic ambitions as a region. "The Combined Authority and the York and North Yorkshire Mayor have, therefore, committed to ensuring every affected employee at the Woodsmith Project is connected to opportunities for reemployment, skills training, and small-business support. "I'd like to reassure those affected workers that we are listening to you and that, through a multi-agency approach, we will ensure you have access to the full range of available support services. "Meanwhile we will continue to work closely with Anglo American in navigating this challenging period and supporting the company's long-term commitment to polyhalite fertiliser extraction in our region."
