Texas Instruments to invest $60bn in US

Texas Instruments (TI) has committed to invest $60bn in the US to expand its semiconductor manufacturing (SM) capacity. The company plans to build seven new factories across Texas and Utah. These facilities will produce billions of foundational semiconductors daily, the company said in a statement. The company added that it is collaborating with the Trump administration to strengthen domestic manufacturing. The company's chips are used in smartphones, vehicles, data centres, satellites, and other electronic devices. US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said: 'For nearly a century, Texas Instruments has been a bedrock American company driving innovation in technology and manufacturing. 'President Trump has made it a priority to increase semiconductor manufacturing in America – including these foundational semiconductors that go into the electronics that people use every day. Our partnership with TI will support US chip manufacturing for decades to come.' In Sherman, Texas, Texas Instruments' first new factory, SM1, will start production in 2025. The exterior of SM2, the second Sherman factory, is complete. TI plans to build two additional factories, SM3 and SM4, to meet future demand. In Richardson, Texas, RFAB2 is scaling up to full production. This follows RFAB1, the world's first 300mm analogue factory, opened in 2011. In Lehi, Utah, the company is ramping up LFAB1, its first 300mm wafer factory. Construction of LFAB2, connected to LFAB1, is underway. Ford is partnering with Texas Instruments to enhance US manufacturing. The collaboration combines Ford's automotive expertise with Texas Instruments' semiconductor technology. Nvidia is also working with Texas Instruments to develop next-generation AI architectures. SpaceX is using its high-speed 300mm SiGe technology, manufactured in Sherman, to support its Starlink satellite internet service. Texas Instruments president and CEO Haviv Ilan said: 'TI is building dependable, low-cost 300mm capacity at scale to deliver the analogue and embedded processing chips that are vital for nearly every type of electronic system. 'Leading US companies such as Apple, Ford, Medtronic, Nvidia and SpaceX rely on TI's world-class technology and manufacturing expertise, and we are honoured to work alongside them and the US government to unleash what's next in American innovation.' C-suite divisions slow GenAI adoption due to security worries

A new report from NTT DATA has highlighted a misalignment among senior executives regarding the adoption and security implications of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in organisations globally. NTT DATA's report, "The AI Security Balancing Act: From Risk to Innovation," is based on survey responses from more than 2,300 senior GenAI decision makers, including over 1,500 C-level executives across 34 countries. The findings underscore a gap between the optimism of CEOs and the caution of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) concerning GenAI deployment. C-Suite perspectives The report indicates that 99% of C-Suite executives are planning to increase their GenAI investments over the next two years, with 67% of CEOs preparing for significant financial commitments. In comparison, 95% of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) report that GenAI is already influencing, or will soon drive, greater spending on cybersecurity initiatives. Improved security was named among the top three benefits realised from GenAI adoption in the past year. Despite these high expectations, a considerable number of CISOs express reservations. Nearly half (45%) of CISOs surveyed shared negative sentiments about GenAI rollouts, identifying security gaps and the challenge of modernising legacy infrastructure as primary barriers. The report also finds differences in the perception of policy clarity. More than half of CISOs (54%) stated that internal GenAI policies are unclear, compared with just 20% of CEOs. This suggests a disconnect between business leaders' strategic vision and concerns raised by operational security managers. "As organisations accelerate GenAI adoption, cybersecurity must be embedded from the outset to reinforce resilience. While CEOs champion innovation, ensuring seamless collaboration between cybersecurity and business strategy is critical to mitigating emerging risks," said Sheetal Mehta, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Cybersecurity at NTT DATA, Inc. "A secure and scalable approach to GenAI requires proactive alignment, modern infrastructure and trusted co-innovation to protect enterprises from emerging threats while unlocking AI's full potential." Operational and skills challenges The study highlights that, while 97% of CISOs consider themselves GenAI decision makers, 69% acknowledge their teams currently lack the necessary skills to work effectively with GenAI technologies. Only 38% of CISOs said their organisation's GenAI and cyber security strategies are aligned, compared with 51% of CEOs. Another area of concern identified is the absence of clearly defined policies for GenAI use within organisations. According to the survey, 72% of respondents had yet to implement a formal GenAI usage policy, and just 24% of CISOs strongly agreed their company has an adequate framework for balancing the risks and rewards of GenAI adoption. Infrastructure and technology barriers Legacy technology also poses a significant challenge to GenAI integration. The research found that 88% of security leaders believe outdated infrastructure is negatively affecting both business agility and GenAI readiness. Upgrading systems such as Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, and edge computing was identified as crucial for future progress. To address these obstacles, 64% of CISOs reported prioritising collaboration with strategic IT partners and co-innovation, rather than relying on proprietary AI solutions. When choosing GenAI technology partners, security leaders ranked end-to-end service integration as their most important selection criterion. "Collaboration is highly valued by line-of-business leaders in their relationships with CISOs. However, disconnects remain, with gaps between the organisation's desired risk posture and its current cybersecurity capabilities," said Craig Robinson, Research Vice President, Security Services at IDC. "While the use of GenAI clearly provides benefits to the enterprise, CISOs and Global Risk and Compliance leaders struggle to communicate the need for proper governance and guardrails, making alignment with business leaders essential for implementation." Survey methodology The report's data derives from a global survey of 2,300 senior GenAI decision makers. Of these respondents, 68% were C-suite executives, with the remainder comprising vice presidents, heads of department, directors, and senior managers. The research, conducted by Jigsaw Research, aimed to capture perspectives on both the opportunities and risks associated with GenAI across different regions and sectors. The report points to the need for structured governance, clarity in strategic direction, and investment in modern infrastructure to ensure successful and secure GenAI deployments in organisations.

Three journalists killed in Israeli strikes on a hospital in Gaza

At least 10 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza's southern city Khan Younis overnight into Thursday, according to Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies. It was not immediately clear if the strikes were related to the recovery mission overnight of the bodies of two hostages. Among those killed in the strikes were three local journalists. They were targeted in an attack on the courtyard of the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, also injuring half-a-dozen others, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The Israeli military said it was looking into reports on the strike at al-Ahli and suggested that its officials may launch an investigation into the allegations. The army says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas because it is embedded in populated areas. Over 180 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of Israel's military campaign, the vast majority of them in Gaza, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists. Israel has said many of those killed in its strikes were militants 'posing as reporters'. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned what it described as Israel's continued systematic and deliberate targeting of journalists. In a statement, the union said that the ongoing Israeli aggression has so far claimed the lives of 225 journalists and media workers, including 30 female journalists. They've also identified the late journalists as Ismail Bdaih, Suleiman Hajjaj, and Samir Al-Rifai. The group has accused Israel of continuing a policy of 'enforced disappearance' against Palestinian journalists, citing the ongoing lack of information regarding the fate of two missing reporters — Nidal Al-Wahidi and Haitham Abdul-Wahed — whose cases the union described as 'clear instances of enforced disappearance in violation of international law.' Israel has come under fire recently for its targeting of journalists and conduct of war. Various global media houses and well known broadcasters have slammed Netanyahu's government for not allowing independent international media into Gaza to report and investigate. Israel says the decision to not allow journalists access into the enclave was for safety reasons, adding that they cannot ensure the safety of journalists once they've entered. Those claims were however dismissed, as various international media outlets have pledged to organise their own security protocol and arrangements. Various groups, including Reporters Without Borders, have accused Israel of attempting to control the narrative and silence the facts by not allowing free press inside Gaza to conduct their own research and show the conditions on the ground. More than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims are in Saudi Arabia for this year's Hajj, according to a Saudi government spokesperson. Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a religious obligation involving rituals and acts of worship that every Muslim must fulfil at least once in their lifetime, if they have the money and are physically able to do it. Hajj Ministry spokesperson Ghassan Al-Nuwaimi provided an approximate number for foreigners at this year's pilgrimage. He did not say how many domestic pilgrims were taking part. Last year, there were 1,611,310 pilgrims from outside the country. It's almost 160,000 fewer pilgrims than last year and a far cry from the pre-pandemic boom, when attendance would regularly push past 2 million. There was a record-breaking Hajj in 2012, when more than 3.16 million Muslims took part. On Wednesday, pilgrims streamed into Arafat, some making the journey on foot, carrying their luggage through temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). People paused to sit on the ground to rest or eat before heading to their camps. Mount Arafat, a rocky hill southeast of Mecca, holds immense significance in Islam. Arafat is mentioned in the Quran and it is where the Prophet Muhammad – Peace be upon him – is said to have given his last sermon on his final Hajj. According to traditional sayings of the prophet, the Day of Arafat is the most sacred day of the year, when God draws near to the faithful and forgives their sins. Pilgrims remain in Arafat, in prayer and reflection, from after midnight until after sunset. After sun down on Thursday, pilgrims headed to the desert plain of Muzdalifah to collect pebbles, which they will use in a ritual. Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on crowd control and safety measures, but the mass of participants makes ensuring their safety difficult. One of the greatest challenges at the Hajj in recent years has been the heat. Earlier in the week, Health Minister Fahad bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel revealed that 10,000 trees have been planted to provide more shade as a governmental initiative to protect people from heat related medical emergencies. He also added that bed capacities at hospitals were greatly increased, and the number of paramedics and medical professionals has tripled.
