Pay by glasses: Alipay+ and Meizu launch world's first AR smart glasses with voice-activated eWallet
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Alipay+ has launched the world's first smart glasses with an integrated eWallet payment solution. The world's first real-world smart glasses-embedded eWallet payment transaction was conducted in Hong Kong via AlipayHK, using the Meizu StarV Snap smart glasses. The development marks a major milestone for Alipay+ as it advances global mobile payment innovation. It also expands the use case scenarios for the AR glass industry while creating new growth avenues for eWallets and merchants. With the pair of Meizu StarV Snap glasses, a user can easily make an eWallet payment via QR scans or voice commands. The feature is made possible by a combination of Alipay+'s AI-powered intent recognition, voice interface, and voiceprint authentication features. According to Alipay+, the feature will be rolled out to its global partner eWallets in 2025 upon the integration of Alipay+'s upgraded tech suite for smart glasses. Smart glasses as a new payment device Alipay+ has been exploring smart glasses as a new payment method as it had previously debuted a smart glasses payment solution with Rokid in China. The latest integration is powered by Alipay+'s latest software development kit (SDK), embedded into all new Meizu smart glasses. The feature is supported by Meizu's optical waveguide display technology, voice noise cancellation and capture technology, and camera-based QR code scanning, which provides a hands-free experience. From the demo video, the glasses use eye tracking to detect the QR code and the user can state the payment amount by voice. It relies on voiceprint recognition to authenticate the payment. To recap, Alipay+ is a unified cross-border wallet gateway under Ant International. It currently connects over 1.7 billion user accounts from 36 global eWallets, national QR schemes, and banking apps to 100 million merchants across more than 70 core markets. With one integration, eWallet providers and financial institutions can access Alipay's expanding toolkits for customer engagement and business growth. This includes integration of QR based and card payments via a global NFC solution. Alipay+ also enables a full range of agentic AI features which include a MCP-based AI payments built on Alipay+ GenAI Cockpit, an AI-as-a-Service platform for fintech companies. Peng Guo, General Manager of the XR Division at Meizu, said, 'The offline payment function of smart glasses launched overseas by Meizu and Alipay+ has set a new technological benchmark for the industry.' 'The innovation in the payment scenario has enhanced the practicality and appeal of smart glasses and promoted the progress and development of the AR glasses industry. We hope this function will bring more convenient experiences to users,' he added. Meanwhile, Ant International Chief Innovation Officer, Jiangming Yang, said 'We are grateful to work with industry leaders like Meizu to pioneer smart glasses-embedded payment solutions. By unlocking payment capabilities, smart glasses will rapidly transform into the next-gen personal device like the mobile phone.' He continued, 'We look forward to supporting more industry partners with one integration into Alipay+'s premium wallet ecosystem across global markets, to help them build broader user scenarios and achieve growth' While Meizu is back in Malaysia as a smartphone brand, there are no pricing and availability details yet for the new smart glasses in Malaysia. At the moment, Alipay+ already supports cross-border payments for eWallets such as Touch 'n Go eWallet where travellers can make cashless payments abroad like a local. — SoyaCincau

Police hunt robber who attacked store worker with baseball bat
MELAKA: An employee of a convenience store in Taman Sin Hoe, Bukit Baru here, sustained head injuries after being struck with a baseball bat during a robbery early yesterday morning. Melaka Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the incident occurred at 4.40am while the 20-year-old victim was on duty alone. He said the victim said the suspect had initially requested a RM50 Touch 'n Go eWallet credit top-up. "However, the suspect suddenly grabbed the cashier drawer, resulting in a struggle with the victim, who tried to stop him. "During the scuffle, the suspect pulled out a weapon believed to be a baseball bat wrapped in black cloth and struck the victim before fleeing with the entire cash register drawer containing cash," he said. The victim suffered an injury to the right side of his head and is currently being treated at Melaka Hospital. He is reported to be in stable condition. "The victim was unable to identify the suspect's face as he was wearing a helmet and a face mask. However, based on his voice during the request for the Touch 'n Go top-up, the suspect is believed to be a Malay male. "After the incident, the victim contacted the store manager and informed them of the robbery, with estimated losses around RM300," he added. Christopher said a forensic team from the Melaka police contingent headquarters found three fingerprints at the scene — on the outer door handle and the checkout counter. "We will also obtain CCTV footage from the store to identify the suspect, who was seen riding a Yamaha LC135 motorcycle," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for robbery causing injury. Earlier, two videos went viral on WhatsApp — one 17 seconds and another six seconds long — showing the victim holding his injured head with visible blood on the floor, and store items scattered across the ground. Meanwhile, Christopher said in a separate incident, another convenience store in Saujana Puri, Bukit Katil, was also robbed around 4.00am.

Touch ‘n Go unveils RM27 LED card that lights up on tap — how well does it work?
KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Touch 'n Go (TNG) has released yet another limited edition Enhanced TNG Card into the market. Officially called the Touch 'n Go LED Limited Edition Card – You Light Up My Life, the new release is slightly different than previous Enhanced TNG Cards. This is because the new card features an LED that would light up when you tap it on the payment terminal. This feature provides an additional interactive element to the card. Our experience with the new TNG LED Card We purchased the new TNG LED Card at TNG Hub in Bangsar South around 2 hours after the existence of the card was revealed on TNG's social media channels. We quickly figured out that the LED can be activated not only through TNG terminals but also other NFC terminals. Among such equipment that we have tried included credit card terminal and door entry system. The LED even lights up when we tap it on the BYD Dolphin's NFC key card reader which is located on the EV's side mirror. Priced at RM27 per piece, the Touch 'n Go LED Card can be obtained through TNG's official Shopee store. — SoyaCincau pic The LED lit up as well when we use the card's NFC feature to link it with the TNG eWallet app and top-up credit into it. However, our experience with iPhone is rather mixed though as the LED would only turn on randomly. Where to get the Touch 'n Go LED Card? Priced at RM27 per piece, the Touch 'n Go LED Card can be obtained through TNG's official Shopee store. Our quick check showed that stocks already run out at the moment although the listing did say that the card is being sold on Shopee as pre-order basis. You still have the option to purchase the card physically at TNG Hub Bangsar South (just like us) or at the Nu Sentral's outlet. When we purchased it earlier today, we were told that customers can purchase as many as they like but it is known whether the policy is still in place now that more and more people are already aware of the card's existence. — SoyaCincau

Tourists visiting Malaysia can now sign up for Touch 'n Go eWallet to make QR payments
Foreign tourists visiting Malaysia from Asean countries can now register for the Touch 'n Go (TNG) eWallet to enable cashless payments via QR code at supported merchants nationwide. This includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. TNG Digital says the move is especially beneficial for local businesses, such as hawkers, which typically do not accept card payments. Visitors to Malaysia registered with the TNG eWallet app will be able to top up their balance using credit or debit cards issued by banks in their home country. They are also not required to use a Malaysian phone number for registration, as verification codes will be sent via WhatsApp. The e-wallet operator further says that this would be expanded to other non-Asean markets soon, including China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. For more information on the registration process, visit the TNG eWallet website.
