Amazon improves Kindle accessibility with new text spacing adjustments

Amazon released a new software update for several recent Kindle models last week. The company's release notes only mention 'performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements,' but the update includes notable upgrades when it comes to adjusting text and line spacing, improving legibility and accessibility for many users, as spotted by The eBook Reader. The 5.18.3 software update currently supports the Kindle Scribes, Kindle Colorsoft, and 11th and 12th generation versions of the basic Kindle and Paperwhite models. Amazon is slowly rolling it out through the Kindle's automatic updates system, but if you don't want to wait, you can download the specific update file for your e-reader, copy it over to your device, and perform a manual update using the instructions Amazon has provided. Previously, these Kindles only offered three basic line spacing options found under the 'Layout' section, including options for adjusting the size of margins. The new spacing options are now found by selecting the button for the 'Font' section, which takes you to a dedicated page. There, you will now find four size options for adjusting line spacing, paragraph spacing, word spacing, and even character spacing, plus the option to reset them all to default settings. Customizing the text and line spacing on Kindles has long lagged behind the options offered by some of Amazon's competitors in the e-reader space. However, while the latest generation Kobo devices still offer more size adjustment options for font size, line spacing, and margins, they don't offer specific controls for paragraph, word, and character spacing. With the latest software update, these recent Kindle models could be a better option for users with a visual impairment, or those dealing with dyslexia.

Amazon's note-taking Kindle Scribe is the cheapest it's ever been

The Father's Day deals have landed, with discounts on everything from Bluetooth speakers to streaming devices to help you (or your dad) make the most of summer. And if your plans involve unwinding with a good book, well, Amazon's latest Kindle Scribe is on sale at Amazon and Best Buy starting at just $299.99 ($100 off), which is a new low price. Both retailers are also offering $100 off the 32GB and 64GB configurations, with the former selling for $319.99 (Amazon, Best Buy) and the largest-capacity model running $349.99 (Amazon, Best Buy). I don't know about you, but I can't get through a book without jotting down half-formed thoughts in the margins as I go. That's why I like the second-gen Kindle Scribe — it's a solid pick if you want a large e-reader that actually lets you write directly on your Kindle books. During my time with it, I appreciated how the textured display better mimics the feel of paper, making note-taking feel more natural. Recent software updates made the biggest difference, though, letting me quickly expand margins or directly mark up pages without interrupting my reading flow. I also appreciated the included stylus, which offers a helpful eraser and a customizable shortcut button. What I also like is that the Scribe isn't just for annotating books — it doubles as a digital notebook, complete with built-in templates for journaling, to-do lists, and other handwritten notes. Even better, new AI-powered tools let you quickly summarize your notes or clean up your handwriting with just a tap, as long as you're connected to the internet. Both features worked surprisingly well in my experience, and since my handwriting is sometimes so messy that even I can't decipher it, I was especially grateful for the intuitive cleanup tool. And, of course, the Scribe shines as an e-reader. Its 300ppi display makes it easy to read, with the larger 10.2-inch screen being particularly helpful for those who wear glasses. Plus, the adjustable warm light makes nighttime reading far more comfortable. All told, it's a convenient all-in-one device that makes reading and note-taking easy —especially if you're already invested in Amazon's ecosystem. A few more ways to save The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 have dropped to an all-time low of around $199.95 ($50 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. The fitness-focused earbuds offer a smaller ear hook design than their predecessor, along with active noise cancellation, wireless charging, and fantastic sound. They also feature IPX4 water resistance and native support for both Android and iOS, plus built-in sensors in each earbud that track your heart rate, making them a great choice for those who want earbuds that can do more than just play music. Read our review. Ring's Floodlight Cam Wired Pro has dropped to a new low price of $179.99 ($80 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and The Home Depot. With 1080p resolution and an adjustable 2,000-lumen light, the solid security camera makes it easy to monitor your surroundings both during the day and at night. It also offers smart alerts for people and motion, along with a loud siren and excellent digital zoom for extra detail when you need it. You can buy the Anker 321 Outlet Extender for $9.99 ($9 off) at Amazon, which is the best price we've seen. It features three AC outlets and a combination of USB-A and USB-C ports, allowing it to charge up to six devices simultaneously. Its compact size makes it perfect for small spaces, and it can deliver up to 20W of power via its USB-C port or up to 12W using either of its USB-A ports (it's capped at 15W across all three, though).

Amazon's super-expensive Kindle Scribe (2024) is on sale at a new record high discount

Typically available for a whopping $399.99 and up, the 2024-released Kindle Scribe is hard to consider a smarter purchase than some of the best tablets frequently priced at a similar level. But what if you could save a cool hundred bucks on Amazon's latest high-end e-reader capable of taking beautifully handwritten notes? While that obviously doesn't change the fact that you're not looking at a full-blown tablet here, the unprecedented discount certainly maximizes the value proposition of a device that had a very specific (and generally very devoted) target audience to begin with. E-Book Reader with 16GB Storage, 2024 Release, 10.2-Inch Glare-Free Display with 300 ppi resolution, Uniform White Borders, Built-in AI-Powered Notebook, Active Canvas, Up to 12 Weeks of Battery Life, Adjustable Warm Light, Auto-Adjusting Front Light Sensor, Flush-Front Design, USB-C Port, Tungsten Color, Premium Pen Included Buy at Amazon Keep in mind that this is the second Kindle Scribe edition, and unlike its 2022 predecessor, the 2024 model comes bundled with a "Premium Pen" as standard. Amazon remarkably slashes $100 off the list prices of all three available storage variants, starting with the 16GB one that normally costs four Benjamins and going up to a 64GB configuration typically setting you back $449.99. Apart from the aforementioned "premium" stylus, which comes equipped with a customizable shortcut button and soft-tipped eraser while not requiring charging or setup, the key selling point and major strength over the greatest Android tablets money can buy in 2025 has to be the epic 12-week battery life rating. Of course, that staggering number can only be achieved in certain usage conditions, but whatever you do, however many books you read, and notes you take on the Kindle Scribe (2024), you should still be able to squeeze one or two weeks of endurance out of this bad boy with minimal effort. The 10.2-inch display is also pretty spectacular (at least by conventional e-book reader standards), rocking 300 ppi resolution and uniform white borders while sitting perfectly flush with the rest of the Kindle Scribe's design to look more like a high-end tablet at a first glance than a product generally viewed as more "rudimentary."

Verge readers can get a rare discount on the smartphone-sized Boox Palma 2 e-reader

Smartphones are convenient for reading on the go, but it's all too easy to get pulled into notifications or a quick glance at the news that spirals into full-on doomscrolling. That's what makes the Boox Palma 2 so appealing. It offers the portability of a phone in a far less distracting package, and until the end of the week, Verge readers can grab the e-reader with a free flip cover case, valued at $16, for $279.99 ($20 off) from Wellbots with code VERGEPALMA20. A minor upgrade over its predecessor, the Boox Palma 2 launched late last year while retaining everything we loved about the original. At 6.3 inches, the Android device is still as pocket-friendly as ever with an easy-to-read E Ink screen and impressive battery life. With Google Play Store built in, it maintains the flexibility that sets it apart from rivals. You can easily install popular reading apps like Amazon Kindle and Rakuten Kobo, giving you access to your entire digital library without having to sideload anything. You can also download apps for music, podcasts, note-taking, and even social media. Thankfully, though, the device runs apps like TikTok too slowly to be real distractions, while still being plenty fast for reading. The Boox Palma 2 also introduces a handful of new features missing from the first Palma. With Android 13 and an upgraded processor, it should last longer and receive a couple more years of security updates than the original's Android 11. It also features a fingerprint sensor built into the power button for convenience and a little extra peace of mind.
