Can we trust Google Maps to get us anywhere anymore?
Andy Walker / Android Authority 🗣️ This is an open thread. We want to hear from you! Share your thoughts in the comments and vote in the poll below — your take might be featured in a future roundup. This past weekend, I was driving home from a wonderful break in the country. I usually use Google Maps to guide me home on longer drives, even if I have driven that route before. It's more of a comfort than a necessity. However, it tried its level best to take me on an unwanted adventure. To get home from the tiny town I visited, I had a choice between a faster toll route or the longer scenic mountain pass that runs alongside it. I selected the 'Avoid tolls' toggle before I left, thinking that the app would suggest I use the pass. After all, it was the best alternative available. That wasn't the case at all. Maps instead suggested two hugely divergent routes that would've taken me two hours north or 90 minutes south of the best route. Absentmindedly, I came so close to taking the suggested deviations. And if I hadn't curiously glanced at my Android Auto display, I would've ended up further from home. This incident opened my eyes to the larger problem affecting Google Maps' navigation reliability, especially on the open road. Having read countless takes online about Maps guiding drivers on obtuse routes, I'd say it's a fairly wide-reaching issue. So, if you have a story to tell, I'd love to hear it. I'm sure other readers would too. Here are the questions: Has Google Maps ever gotten you lost? If so, tell us about the experience. What's the worst place Google Maps has ever taken you? Do you feel that Maps has grown more inaccurate and less reliable over time? What is your preferred navigation app on Android, and why do you pick it? Would you pay a premium for a Google Maps that offers smarter navigation and more contextually aware features? Be sure to vote in the poll below, too! Has Google Maps ever gotten you lost while driving? 0 votes Yes. Google Maps consistently gets me lost. NaN % Yes. Once or twice, but not very often. NaN % No, Google Maps has always been a reliable guide for me. NaN % I don't use Google Maps while driving. NaN % 👇Sound off in the comments with your Google Maps adventure anecdotes and opinions.

Warm or very warm with top temperatures of 21 to 27 degrees, in light to moderate southeast breezes. Advertisement Friday will be very warm or hot. Largely dry with spells of summer sunshine, however showers may break out locally, possibly heavy. They said there will be top temperatures of 21 to 28 or 29 degrees, highest values in the midlands and north, all in mostly moderate southeast breezes. Saturday said while warm sunshine is expected, a scattering of showers will occur too, some heavy and possibly thundery. Top temperatures of 19 to 25 degrees, warmest across the eastern half of the country, all in a light to moderate southwest wind. Sunday will be fresher and breezier than recent days with highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, best values further east. Keeping your windows open during the day Although it is tempting to open your windows and let in the fresh air, especially during warm weather, Energia is advising against it. Advertisement During a heatwave, the fresh air is hotter than what is inside your home, so letting it in during the warmest hours, usually between 12pm and 4pm, can actually trap heat and make your room even more uncomfortable. Warm outdoor air combined with trapped indoor heat quickly turns your home into an oven, the energy provider explained. Leaving curtains or blinds open Although it is tempting to allow some natural light in during a heatwave, it may come at a cost. Sunlight pouring in through your windows can make your home much hotter, especially if your windows face south or west where the sun is strongest in the afternoon Advertisement This creates a greenhouse effect where heat builds up inside and stays trapped. Using appliances that give off heat Appliances like ovens, tumble dryers, and hairdryers can create a lot of heat when they are running. Using them during the hottest part of the day makes your home hotter and harder to cool. This extra warmth builds up quickly, especially in smaller rooms with poor airflow. Keeping electronics plugged in Even when turned off, plugged-in devices like TVs, gaming consoles, and phone chargers still use power and produce small amounts of heat. Read More Each device gives off a small amount of heat, but when many are plugged in, it can make a room warmer, especially if the room is small and not well-ventilated. Leaving lights on Lights, especially old-style incandescent bulbs, generate a lot of heat when they are on. Keeping lights on when you do not need them adds extra heat to your home, and during long summer days, there is usually enough daylight, so you do not need to use lights inside. However, many people forget to turn them off out of habit. This is an easy mistake that can make your home hotter.

Education Minister announces hiring of 90 therapists in 45 special schools
The Minister for Education has announced plans to hire 90 therapists in 45 special schools across the country. The hiring process for occupational therapists and speech and language therapists will start in the next week. Advertisement All of those are due to be appointed to special schools for the start of the 2026 school year, while the roll out of therapists for mainstream schools will happen in the future. Speaking to Newstalk, Minister Helen McEntee, says it is vital children are not taken out of school to receive therapy: "The structure as it currently exists is not working for children. "It is not getting directly to them and that is why we are bringing it back to this. We need to make sure that for children who spend so much time in school that we are not taking them out to another environment that is alien to them." She said it is important that the therapist is there in school and providing them with the therapy they need. Advertisement As The Irish Times reports, she also wants a national survey of all parents of school-going and preschool children to determine what type of education they want to see for their children. This will look at the issue of patronage and what kind of school's parents want for their children. Ms McEntee said she will also be publishing a new Deis (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) plan to tackle educational disadvantage and take steps to address absenteeism. 'I will work with schools to reduce the costs they are facing and also work to reduce costs faced by parents, such as the cost of uniforms,' she said. Advertisement The plan also includes 400 new special classes in mainstream schools and the roll-out of free schoolbooks to all schools. The shortage of teachers in schools is to be tackled by earlier access to permanent contracts, while allowing newly qualified teachers trained outside the State to apply for registration and complete their induction in the Republic. There are also plans for a new common applications system for school admissions to be in place in several pilot schools in 2026, which will end the need for parents to make multiple applications to schools.
