'Gorgeous' County Durham park to host free community walk
A free community walk, giving people the chance to 'unwind and connect' with others is set to take place in County Durham. The 'Big Walk' event, organised by Durham County Council's Wellbeing, Sport and Leisure Team, will be held take place on Thursday, July 17 at 10.30am. It is a special addition to the regular community wellbeing walks and will be a 90-minute route through Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street. After the walk, participants can join an optional bring-your-own picnic. A Gentle Steps session on the flat, accessible, and safe running track is also available for those unable to join the full 90-minute walk. This offers a shorter, more relaxed stroll in a supportive environment. Councillor Howard Brown, cabinet member for adult and health services at Durham County Council, said: "These wellbeing walks are a perfect opportunity for people in the county to take a break from their busy lives and connect with our gorgeous countryside. "Not only does walking provide a myriad of physical health benefits which are widely reported on, but it also boosts people's mental health as well. "I can think of few better ways to relax after a stressful week than getting out into nature." The regular wellbeing walks, suitable for most abilities, are coordinated by the council's trained walk leaders and volunteers and can last between 60 and 90 minutes. These are part of a programme of 'move' activities and sessions offered by the council, aimed at integrating physical activity into everyone's daily life. Councillor Brown added: "We'd like to invite anyone who is able to take part in the Big Walk through the gorgeous parkland, and if that's not your speed, then please join our Gentle Steps session." The Big Walk is also part of Thrive's 'Together We Move' campaign and includes 'Start Me Up' sessions for the Durham City Run Festival, led by trained run leaders. To take part, interested individuals can secure their place by visiting

Linden anti-violence efforts ready for summer
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — As the weather in central Ohio is getting warmer, community organizations are getting ready to host events to help make Columbus safer. 'Oh, it should be jam-packed tomorrow,' said Derrick Russell, founder of Linden Community Stop The Violence. The walks bring together community members and several organizations in Linden. They've become a sort of tradition in recent years, and Russell helps lead them. 'When we first started, the doors were closed; now they come out on the porch, walk with us, talk with us, but we need more, we need more,' Russell said. The first walk of the year was supposed to take place May 12, but it was cancelled because of rain. Russell said because of that, there's even more excitement for the walk on May 19. During the walks, the organizations move around neighborhoods in the area to connect residents with help or resources they might need. 'The most powerful success story I can think of is that I actually met three gang members,' Russell said. 'They were gang members, we invited them out to the walk, they end up coming to the walk, they saw the collaboration of different people and then they stopped being in the gang, and to this day, I have them working with me.' There have been more homicides in May than in any other month in 2025. 'That's a reminder we've got to continue to stay out here and we can't just sit back,' Russell said. 'That's just a reminder that we've got to get out here and hopefully, in June, that it'll go back down and we won't have that same number.' The groups that organize the walks are planning to have two a month through October. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
