Guernsey Election 2025: Top five in the polls on next States term
Candidates who topped the polls said they felt the next States would work well Lindsay de Sausmarez, who came out on top with support from more than half of those who voted, said she was "stunned" by the Yvonne Burford, who came second in the polls, said it was hard to know how well she was doing while she was out five candidate Paul Montague said it was an "incredibly long interview process". De Saumerez received 10,721 votes and said she was pleased many candidates had focused on housing in their manifestos."I'm really hoping that there will something where we can keep the momentum going and really build on the progress that we have managed to achieve in the last couple of years," she said. When asked Burford said she was confident the issue of States finances would be sorted before the next election."A really strong theme in the election is about working together and it was a lot of deputies promised to do and I think we have a really good sprit going forward," she Parkinson, who came third, said he would be going for the top job of Policy and Resources president."My ambition was to finish in the top five and I'm there so obviously the public have confidence in me and I'll try not to disappoint them." Mr Montague, the only non-current States member who came in the top 10, said he would be throwing his hat in the ring for the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture."[It's] absolutely the right place for me, it's the right fit," he Montague also suggested he would want to sit on the Committee for Health and Social Care."A lot of my concerns are to do with particularly physical and mental health of young people," he said."Particularly physical health in terms of preventative medicine to make sure that we can after ourselves in future. But also mental health, I've seen some real problems with youngsters in education." Deputy Steve Falla, who came fourth, said he was "very grateful" the public put their trust in him."There is a lot of work to do but I'm really up for it and I'm really ready for it," he said."I'm very pro business. I will be putting myself forward for the president of Economic Development and it will down to the assembly if they favour me with that job."

Jannik Sinner stuns fans by announcing jaw-dropping new career endeavour
Jannik Sinner has swapped tennis swinging for tenor singing with his shock new music collaboration. The World No1 tennis star, 23, has proven his ability with a racquet in hand. But now he will be hoping his shock new venture with Andrea Bocelli is anything but a racket, The Sun reports. That is because the top male singles player has dropped his very own … single. Watch the biggest Aussie sports & the best from overseas LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. The Australian Open and US Open champion – who served a controversial three-month doping ban earlier this year – has linked up with Italian compatriot and world-famous opera singer Bocelli, 66, to release their track. The celebrity duo's duet Polvere e Gloria – which translates as 'Dust and Glory' in English – will be released on Friday, with a teaser video featuring the pair launched on Thursday. Sinner says in the short clip: 'In our lives there will be many first times … all you need to do is be yourself.' And the three-time major winner will be hoping he smashes it rather than double faults as he aims to hit the notes … not the nets. Sinner follows in the footsteps of fellow tennis players Yannick Noah, Lorenzo Sonego, Denis Shapovalov and Corentin Moutet by releasing music – with the others having mixed levels of success. Bocelli, meanwhile, memorably sang at Leicester City's 5,000-1 Premier League title coronation for his friend Claudio Ranieri – and then made a surprise cameo on Match of the Day last month to bid Gary Lineker farewell. But tennis fans could barely believe the Sinner and Bocelli link-up was genuine. One said: 'I was confused for a moment, this is not AI I guess.' Another wrote: 'Wait this is real?! I need to sit with this for a bit.' A third added: 'Jannik you truly surprise us.' And a final user replied: 'Not on my 2025 bingo card.' Sinner suffered heartache in the epic, five-hour-29-minute French Open final as he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in dramatic fashion. The No1 seed took the opening two sets then had three match points in the fourth set before the Spaniard's sensational comeback. Sinner will be hoping to get revenge at Wimbledon where they could meet in another final – but Alcaraz is going for a hat-trick of grass-court crowns.

Feature Video: BOY SODA - Blink Twice
This week's Feature Video takes a twenty dollar sheet and squeezes it for every cent in this textural, movement-driven music video from Eora based R'n'B artist BOY SODA, 'Blink Twice'. Skeleton staff and a penny-pinching budget means nothing in the face of raw talent and a great collab, as proven by BOY SODA and 'Blink Twice' director Adam Saunders. Armed with a few reference images and a great track, the team set to work in visualising a clip that uses classic design elements (think movement, lighting, texture, colour and composition) to effortlessly punctuate BOY SODA's effortless panache. 'BOY SODA came to my studio with a handful of reference images that were really speaking to him, and from there, my job was to elevate and bring them to life' explains director Adam. 'We picked up a twenty dollar sheet from Spotlight and some plastic from Bunnings. Forty dollars in props all up and those sheet shots ended up coming together even better than we could've imagined. It was a true grassroots effort with a skeleton crew and help from local friends and artists.' 'I was really intent on incorporating movement into these shots whether it be through fabric playing with the wind or light revealing parts of my face, and wanted to deliver cinematic moments to accompany the music' adds BOY SODA. 'The song is about staying connected and grounded, that's how we made these visuals, with a crew of lovely and dedicated people who went above and beyond to pull together some really special moments that feel undeniable and as rich as the music.'

UK and Bahrain sign defense pact and £2bn investment deal
LONDON: Bahrain and the UK finalized two major agreements on Thursday during an official trip to London by Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa. During a visit to No. 10 Downing Street for talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the prince and his host oversaw the signing of a Strategic Investment and Collaboration Partnership, SIP2 for short, said to represent a renewed framework for two-way investment between their countries. The agreement will enable £2 billion ($2.7 billion) of investment by Bahrain's private sector in key UK sectors including financial services, technology, manufacturing and decarbonization, officials said. It was signed by Bahrain's finance minister, Sheikh Salman bin Khalifa Al-Khalifa, and the British chancellor of the exchequer, Rachel Reeves. The second deal was a Defense Cooperation Accord which, according to officials, aims to enhance interoperability and joint training between the nations' armed forces, building on the foundations of an already strong naval partnership. It was signed by defense ministers, Lt. Gen. Abdullah Al-Nuaimi and John Healey. During his discussions with Starmer, Prince Salman reaffirmed the strength of relations between their countries, which he said continues to grow under the leaderships of King Hamad and King Charles, the Bahrain News Agency reported. The leaders reviewed progress on a proposed UK-Gulf Cooperation Council free trade agreement, and the crown prince welcomed the UK's decision to fully participate in the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement, following a joint invitation in December from founding signatories Bahrain and the US. Regional and wider international developments featured prominently in the discussions between Prince Salman and Starmer, who both expressed concern about the recent escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran. They agreed on the urgent need to deescalate the conflict, ease tensions and resume dialogue. They also reiterated previous calls for an immediate ceasefire agreement in Gaza, unimpeded humanitarian access to the territory, and the release of all hostages still held by Hamas. Starmer congratulated Bahrain on its recent election as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term beginning in January 2026, and both leaders agreed to work closely to bolster their diplomatic efforts in the run-up to that.
