Having trouble opening Chrome? It may be Microsoft's fault
Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR A bug is preventing Windows users from opening Google's Chrome browser. The bug is connected to Microsoft's Family Safety feature. There are a few workarounds, like renaming to Microsoft isn't afraid to deploy tactics to nudge you away from Chrome. For example, earlier this year, Bing users were running into a pop-up that discouraged them from switching browsers. However, the friction between the two isn't always intentional, which could include the current issue that's preventing Windows users from opening Chrome. Spotted by The Verge, a growing number of Windows users are reporting that they are either unable to open Chrome or the browser keeps closing itself. The issue appears to be connected to a bug affecting Microsoft's Family Safety feature, a set of parental controls and filters for Microsoft 365 subscribers. 'Our team has investigated these reports and determined the cause of this behavior,' said a Chrome support manager. 'For some users, Chrome is unable to run when Microsoft Family Safety is enabled.' Strangely, this bug only seems to prevent Chrome from opening. The outlet reports that other browsers, like Opera and Firefox, are unaffected. Although the issue is known, Microsoft has remained quiet about a fix and when it could roll out. In a bug tracking thread, a Chromium engineer said, 'We've not heard anything from Microsoft about a fix being rolled out.' The tech giant also did not respond to the outlet's questions. If you're experiencing this issue, there are some workarounds you can use until a fix is released. Some users on Reddit found that renaming to seemed to work. You can also disable the 'filter inappropriate websites' setting in Family Safety. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Google Messages bug infects certain Android phones causing them to crash
Google Messages is having an issue with the latest beta version of the app which is version 20250610_00_RC02 The bug is affecting the Google Messages app on Pixel handsets and Samsung phones. To see if you have this beta version of Google Messages on your Pixel, go to Settings > Apps > See all xxx apps . Scroll down and tap on Messages. From the App info page, scroll down to the very bottom to see if the version number matches what we wrote in the first sentence of this story. In my case, it is a match with the Google Messages app on my Pixel 6 Pro. If you have the impacted version of Google Messages like I do, you have a bug in Google Messages that prevents the new forward button from working. It is a circle with an arrow turning to the right and contains two arrow points. Pressing on this button is supposed to bring up a list of your contacts so you pick who you'd like to share an image or text with. The problem is that the bug in version 20250610_00_RC02 of Google Messages causes the app to crash immediately if you press the forward button. If you open Android's system Share sheet and tap on Messages in any app, the app will also crash. For example, I opened Chrome, directed the browser to , tapped the three-dot icon in the right corner, and clicked on Share from the menu. When the Share sheet popped up, I pressed on Messages and the app crashed. Google Messages bug leads the app to crash when the new forward button, above the green arrow, is pressed. | Image credit-PhoneArena Until the bug is exterminated the best way to share a link is to manually copy and from the Google Messages app right now, at least until Google sends out an update that exterminates the bug, is to manually copy and paste links you're trying to share with others. As for images, save them on your device and share them by tapping the Gallery icon found inside a thread. Once the forward button is fixed, using it will be the easiest way to share links and images. New Settings page for Google Messages is in the works. | Image credit-9to5Google If you don't want to wait for Google to send a patch to fix this, you can exit the Google Messages beta program by tapping this link and clicking on the "Leave This Program" button in the lower right. Once you do that, go to the PlayStore and tap on this link to install the stable version of Google Messages on your phone. Google is also working on a new look for the Google Messages Settings pages with a Material 3 Expressive redesign. All of the items in the menu are in a container with Material 3 toggles employed. This has not been widely disseminated yet and has not arrived on my Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.

Google Messages missing contact photos? You're not alone
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR The latest Google Messages update introduced a new bug that's making contact photos disappear. The issue appears to only affect some beta users and is not widespread. Affected users are still seeing contact photos in the Contacts app, and it briefly shows when tapping a conversation, but then defaults back to the monogram. If you're running the beta version of Google Messages, you might have observed something strange. Don't worry — you're not going crazy. There appears to be a bug in the latest update that is causing contact photos to not show up in chat threads. The issue was brought up by Reddit user Typicalg123 in r/GoogleMessages. Though users can still view their contact photos in the Contacts app, it looks like the images only briefly show when you tap a conversation before defaulting back to the original monogram. From the Reddit discussion, another user, u/Jmerse, states that the bug only seems to affect contacts who use an iPhone. Again, this issue seems to only affect certain users and applies to Google Pixel and Samsung devices. The common factor appears to be the Google Messages beta. However, it isn't a widespread issue affecting everyone, just some, as Tech-Issues Today was unable to replicate the problem themselves, even while running the beta. We don't know if Google knows about this bug yet. But if this problem is affecting your device, you could try clearing the cache or even performing a full uninstall and then reinstalling Google Messages. If that doesn't work, then leaving the beta program and going back to a stable public build might fix it. Just remember to back up your messages before troubleshooting if you care about chat history. We saw a 'Delete for Everyone' feature that also recently started to roll out to beta users. This vanishing contact photo bug might be an unintended result of that feature, given the timing, or it might not be. You do have to admit that the timing is a bit of a coincidence, though, and it's not uncommon for a new bug to show itself when there's a new feature. That's just the name of the game when it comes to software development. If you're experiencing this issue, unfortunately, you'll have to try one of the fixes we mentioned above or just wait it out. Since this bug is only affecting a small subset of users and Google might not be aware of it yet, there is no telling when there will be an update to patch this. Got a tip? Talk to us!
