Hundreds of Thousands of Acura and Honda Vehicles Have a Brake Problem
Some Of Honda's Most Popular Cars Are Faulty The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new recall for some 259,033 vehicles that may have a dangerous flaw. According to the NHTSA recall documents, a pivot pin on the brake pedal of certain vehicles under both the Honda and Acura brands may not have been secured properly, which may cause the pedal to move out of position. As you can imagine, the worst-case scenario might see a driver press the brake only to find that the pedal may simultaneously engage the accelerator pedal (none of the affected cars come with a clutch pedal) or be otherwise prevented from being fully depressed. The recall affects the Honda Pilot and Acura MDX three-row mid-size SUVs, along with the TLX sedan. Numerous Model Years Face The Recall The recall impacts TLX model years 2021-2025, while owners of either SUV only need to worry if theirs is a 2023-2025 model. As a physical flaw, this won't be solved with a software update, and dealers will have to inspect and replace the brake pedal assembly as necessary. As a manufacturer flaw, this won't cost owners anything but time. Speaking of which, drivers will need to be cautious for a little while, as notification letters are only expected to be mailed on July 28. In the meantime, it can't hurt to physically inspect the pedals before each drive to ensure that neither foot pedal is interfering with the other. Recalls Are Only One Concern For Honda Source: James Riswick/Autoblog Every year, millions of cars are recalled over defects, but Honda has managed to maintain a reputation for reliability. Still, there are challenges it must face that are beyond its control. Honda says tariffs will erase some $4 billion from its profit margins, and it's going to spend a not-inconsiderable amount moving production of the popular Civic to avoid those tariffs. Hopefully, this major change and other cost-cutting measures do not negatively impact quality. Fortunately, the TLX won't be badly impacted as it's built in Marysville, Ohio. The MDX and Pilot benefit from being made in Lincoln, Alabama, too. About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile

Honda recalls more than a quarter of a million cars over brake pedal issue
Honda is recalling more than 259,000 of its cars across the U.S. due to a brake pedal problem that could pose crash risks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published documents recalling a selection of Honda Pilots made between the 2023 and 2025 model years. The recall also covers some Acura 2021-2025 TLX and 2023-2025 MDX luxury cars. According to the report, brake pedals in the affected vehicles have a pin that may not be properly fastened. The pin holds the pedal in place, and if it is loose it allows the pedal to shift out of position. If the brake pedal is in an incorrect position, it "may lead to unintended application," which would increase the potential for a crash. In other words, the car might stop when you don't want it to stop. 'The issue could also cause an abnormal brake pedal feeling during operation, illuminate the brake malfunction light in the instrument cluster, or cause the vehicle's brake lights to remain lit even when the brake pedal is not applied,' America Honda said in a statement Wednesday. Honda said its dealers will inspect the vehicles covered by the recall and replace the affected parts for free if necessary. The company estimates that approximately 1 percent of the vehicles covered by the recall will have the issues. Dealer notifications were sent out on June 13, and mailed letters will go out on July 28. Drivers who want to check to see if their vehicle is part of the recall and find more information on the NHTSA website or Honda's recall tool. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall, though Honda has received three warrant claims related to the issue. Honda first became aware of the issue in April 2024 and launched an investigation into the faulty part. The company determined that the issue's cause was a fault brake pedal pivot pin installed at a U.S. plant, which has since been closed. Production from that plant was transferred to a plant in Mexico, where a camera is now used to ensure the pivot pin is correctly "staked," according to the report.

Honda recalls nearly 260,000 vehicles over brake pedal issue
Honda is recalling 259,033 vehicles in the U.S. because a small number of them may have a brake pedal defect. The cars' brake pedal pivot pin was not properly staked during production, meaning the pedal can potentially move side to side, preventing motorists from safely stopping their cars, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A range of vehicle models could potentially contain faulty brake pedals, according to the report. The models that could have the defect are: 2021-2025 Acura TLX 2023-2025 Acura MDX 2023-2025 Honda Pilot "If the driver is unable to safely slow or stop the vehicle, the risk of a crash or injury [is] increased," the NHSA's safety report states. Affected vehicles generate a warning when the brake pedal is not working properly. A brake malfunction light will illuminate, and drivers will sense what the report describes as an "abnormal pedal feeling" when they engage the brake. Owners of the vehicles under recall can expect to be contacted by mail, and instructed to take their vehicles to an authorized Honda or Acura dealer to have the brake pedal replaced, if necessary. Owners who have already repaired the brakes are eligible for reimbursement, according to the NHTSA. The faulty brake pedals were assembled at a U.S. plant, which is no longer operational. In November 2024, production was moved to Mexico, where the automaker relied on a camera sensor to ensure that the brakes' pivot pins were properly staked. "As part of the production transition from the U.S. to the Mexico facility, the supplier increased staffing levels to build parts inventory and mitigate potential supply disruptions associated with the move. However, due to insufficient training, the staking process was not performed, resulting in brake pedals with unstaked pivot pins," the NHTSA stated in its report.

'The Pedal [Could] Shift Out of Position:' Honda Recalls a Quarter-Million Cars Over Faulty Brake Pedals
Honda has issued a recall for 259,033 vehicles in the United States. The cars may have a brake pedal assembly with an improperly staked pivot pin, which could allow the pedal to shift laterally out of position. If this happens, it could compromise the driver's braking ability and cause a crash. The recall affects the 2023-2025 Honda Pilot , 2023-2025 Acura MDX , and the 2021-2025 Acura TLX . The Pilot makes up most of the recalled cars—184,243 vehicles. Honda estimates that one percent of the affected models have the defect. Honda received its first report of a vehicle experiencing brake pedal movement in April 2024. It received a second report in December 2024 and began investigating the parts inventory from the supplier in February 2025 before determining, earlier this month, to issue a voluntary recall. Honda discovered that when the supplier relocated production from the United States to Mexico, it increased staffing and production to offset any supply shortages. However, the staff failed to perform the staking process due to insufficient training, resulting in brake pedals with unstaked pins. In the Safety Recall Report , Honda states it's not aware of any reported injuries or deaths related to this issue. However, it is aware of three related warranty claims. The company will begin notifying affected customers by the end of July, instructing owners to take their vehicles to a dealer for an inspection. Service technicians will replace the assembly if necessary.
