Police kill bear that attacked Maple Ridge woman, search ongoing for orphaned cubs

(AP Photo/Bob Hallinen) Mounties in Maple Ridge killed a bear after it attacked a woman in her backyard Thursday night, officials confirmed. According to the Ministry of Environment, the black bear swiped the victim on the side of the head. She was treated in hospital, but police described her injuries as minor. 'RCMP destroyed the suspected offending bear – a sow with two cubs,' the ministry wrote in a statement to CTV News. Conservation officers were sent to the area early Friday morning, and are still searching for the orphaned cubs on foot, in vehicles, and in the air with drones. The ministry asked anyone who sees the bear cubs to call the Report All Poachers and Polluters line at 1-877-952-7277. The Ridge Meadows RCMP sent a warning to residents about wildlife encounters in light of the bear attack, which said officers responded to 'an incident involving a resident and a bear' Thursday, but did not elaborate further. When CTV News asked police how they came to the decision to kill the bear, they wrote in a statement: 'The decision to dispatch an animal by police is always made on the basis of whether it is potentially dangerous or suffering. Given the nature of the call, including the injury sustained by the resident and the bear still posing a threat on the resident's property, officers were forced to act in the interest of public safety and make a difficult decision. We continue to work with our BC Conservation Officer Service and municipal partners to educate the public and prevent further incidents such as this involving wildlife.' Mounties also said an aggressive coyote bit a dog on Tuesday. 'While bear and coyote sightings are common in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Ridge Meadows RCMP is taking this opportunity to remind residents to stay vigilant and use precaution,' police wrote in a news release Friday. 'We all play a significant role in determining how wildlife will interact with humans. Educating yourself and your family can help prevent such encounters.' Police reminded residents to keep dogs on a leash, secure their garbage, and to never approach or feed wildlife.

Japanese monk adopts abandoned dog deemed too noisy, later saved by canine from fierce bear
A Japanese Buddhist monk who adopted an abandoned dog was saved by the canine during a fierce bear attack. Tougen Yoshihara, the abbot of Youkoku Temple, a historic temple in Niigata in central Japan, was taking his one-year-old Beagle, Chico, for a walk in the woods near the temple on May 29 when an unexpected encounter occurred. Suddenly, a 1.6-metre-tall bear appeared before them, leaving Yoshihara in shock, as he had never before faced such a beast. In a panic, he stumbled and fell while attempting to escape, resulting in a dislocated right shoulder. Experts recommend that Beagles, a breed known for their loud and playful demeanour, should not be abandoned because of their noise. Photo: Nippon Television (NTV) At 45, Yoshihara was an avid exerciser with an exceptionally muscular physique, yet at that moment he felt nothing but helplessness, aware that survival seemed unlikely.

Hiker dies after bear knocks him into 2,600-foot ravine in Greece, witness says
A veteran Greek hiker died Tuesday after falling into a ravine in the north of the country after a bear encounter, rescuers said. Christos Stavrianidis was declared dead at Kavala hospital shortly after he was found in the 2,600-foot ravine in Fraktou forest in northeastern Greece, the Ekav national emergency center told AFP. Stavrianidis was in the forest with another experienced hiker, Dimitris Kioroglou, when the incident happened on Monday. "I suddenly saw a bear which attacked me," Kioroglou told news portal NewsIT. "My dog delayed it for a few seconds. I used pepper spray, and it headed to where my friend was and knocked him into the ravine." Panos Stefanou, spokesman for Greece wildlife group Arcturos, said the bear was likely defending itself. "This is more a defensive behavior, not an attack. The bear is trying to push back what it sees as a threat," he told state TV ERT. The hikers were heading towards the remains of a Greek warplane that crashed in the area some seven decades earlier. Stavrianidis had found the plane deep in the forest last August. He was leading efforts to identify a more accessible route to its location to enable more people to visit the wreckage. "It's a beautiful discovery that deserves to be viewed on location... the fuselage is nearly intact," he had told a local journalist last year. "It's a treasure of nature and should be left (in the forest)," he had said. Brown bears are protected under Greek law, according to Ursa Trails, which notes the biggest populations are located in the mountains of western Rhodopes and Northern and Central Pindos. Last month, Slovenia approved the culling of more than 200 brown bears, whose population in a forested area outside the capital had grown to around 1,000. Slovakia has also grappled with a surging brown bear population as well as attacks on humans. In April, lawmakers approved a plan to shoot about 350 brown bears in Slovakia after a man was mauled to death while walking in a forest there, the BBC reported. Last year, a woman died in Slovakia after being chased by a bear through dense forest and mountainous terrain.
