Meta Confirms Facebook Upgrade—How To Keep Your Account

All change for Facebook. So, this is ironic. Coming the same day as the latest warning that Facebook passwords have been breached (along with others) on an unimaginable scale, you can now stop this happening to you, ensuring you keep your account and it's not lost to hackers. Your Facebook account will be upgraded — and you need to act as soon as it is. We're talking passkeys, and the news Meta is 'introducing passkeys on Facebook for an easier sign-in.' There are so many reports on Facebook account hacks and password breaches, and users struggling to recover those accounts, that this is long overdue. 'Passkeys make it simpler and safer than ever to sign in to Facebook,' the company dsays, with the same fingerprint, face or PIN you already use on your mobile device." Facebook passkeys are expected on both iPhone and Android 'soon,' and 'will begin rolling out passkeys to Messenger in the coming months. The same passkey you set up for Facebook will also work on Messenger once this capability launches.' Passkeys are finallt here. You should enable passkeys on all accounts where they're available, and where they're not, you should stop using SMS for two-factor authentication (2FA) and use authenticator apps instead. Microsoft is even pushing its users to delete passwords altogether, given the inherent risks in having these enabling access to accounts. With that Cybersecurity News report that 'since the beginning of the year' it has 'discovered 30 exposed datasets containing from tens of millions to over 3.5 billion records each. In total, the researchers uncovered an unimaginable 16 billion records,' accounts have never been more at risk, so make this change as soon as you can. Google has warned passkeys are still very under-used — even 2FA is enabled by less than half of users. Paskeys are easier and more secure, linking your login credentials to your physical device, unlocked with the same biometrics or PIN used to unlock your device. This means they can't be intercepted, stolen or even shared. Meta says 'creating your passkey is easy and only takes a few simple steps. You can set up and manage your passkey in Accounts Center, found within the Settings menu on Facebook. You also may be prompted to set up a passkey when you log in to Facebook.'

Facebook will soon roll out support for passkeys on Android and iOS

Facebook is rolling out support for passkeys on both iOS and Android, the social network announced on Wednesday. Passkey logins make it harder for bad actors to remotely access your accounts because they require physical access to your phone. Unlike standard logins, passkeys use Face ID or Touch ID, a PIN, or a physical security authentication key to validate logins. Passkeys remove the need to rely on username and password combinations, which can be susceptible to phishing and other issues. Image Credits:Facebook Facebook says that passkeys will also start rolling out to Messenger in the coming months, and that users will be able to use the same passkey for both services. Passkeys can also be used to autofill payment information when making purchases using Meta Pay, Facebook says. To set up a passkey, you'll navigate to the new 'passkey' option in Accounts Center within the Settings menu on Facebook. Once it's set up, you can start using your passkey to log in to Facebook on your phone. You'll still be able to use other authentication methods, such as your password, to access your account so that you can still access the social network when using a device that doesn't support passkeys. Facebook is one of many tech companies to introduce passkey support in the past year or so. Other big names that have done so include Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, X, and GitHub.

Facebook rolls out passkey support to fight phishing attacks

Facebook is adding support for passkeys on its mobile app. That means you'll be able to log into the platform using your device's authentication method, like your fingerprint, face scan, or PIN, making it more difficult for bad actors to take control of your account. Passkeys offer a more secure alternative to typical passwords because they can't be stolen, guessed, or leaked. They also provide protection against phishing scams, which occur when a bad actor attempts to trick victims into exposing personal information, often by linking to fake login pages. Since your browser automatically links your passkey with a specific domain, it won't accept passkeys on phony webpages. But, as pointed out by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, there's still a risk if you have your password memorized and type it into the fake webpage anyway. Meta doesn't provide a specific timeline for when passkey support will arrive, only saying it will launch on Android and iOS 'soon.' The company plans on bringing passkey support to the Messenger app as well, where you'll be able to use the same passkey you set up for Facebook. Both platforms will join several other big names that have adopted the more secure sign-in method, including Google, Microsoft, Apple, and the Meta-owned WhatsApp. Even if you set up a passkey, you'll still be able to use your password to sign into your Facebook or Messenger account. You can log in using other methods, too, including a physical security key or two-factor authentication. Aside from logging into your account, Meta will let you use your passkey when autofilling payment information on Meta Pay as well.
