Taxpayer group wants Bow River phone line disconnected
A couple paddle a raft in the Bow River trying to beat the heat in Calgary, Alta., Wednesday, June 30, 2021. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh Calgarians were charged $65,000 to support an art project that allowed residents to listen to the gurgling waters of the Bow River, a funding watchdog says. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is lashing out against the Reconnecting to the Bow project, a city-funded initiative that involved a hotline connecting callers to the sound of the Bow River at any time. CTF says the project is unnecessary and a waste of money. 'If someone wants to listen to a river, they can go sit next to one, but the City of Calgary should not force taxpayers to pay for this,' said Kris Sims, CTF Alberta director, in a news release. 'If phoning a river floats your boat, you do you, but don't force your neighbour to pay for your art choices.' The phone line, which is accessed by calling 1-855-BOW-LSTN (1-855-269-5786), was originally introduced in 2014 and reintroduced by the Calgary Arts Development Authority last year. The authority said during the first 10 days of launch thousands of people called the hotline. The project is expected to run until December.

Southsea seafront sculpture returns 50 years after disappearing
It's been more than 50 years since six stone sculptures lined Southsea seafront.A series of five Portsmouth Markers have been dotted across the coast since 1974 as part of a citywide art were originally a series of six, but Portsmouth City Council says one disappeared from its location in the late John Maine, the artist who originally designed the series, has carved the sixth addition to be unveiled along the promenade near the Pyramids. The local authority commissioned Mr Maine to create the sixth 'cousin' as part of its arts programme for the Southsea Coastal sculptures, carved from Portland stones, were some of Mr Maine's first pieces of work. Mr Maine explained: "The Portsmouth Markers have been sited to emphasise key points along the coast."In the Solent nearby there are island fortresses and navigational markers which create intervals across the vast expanse of the sea and this inspired my approach to sculpture in landscape."The other stones are located at The Point, Hotwalls Studios, Spur Redoubt, Bandstand Field and Castle Maine said the space between the sculptures "becomes part of the story"."I believe that such small-scale interventions can have a powerful influence on our reading of the whole landscape," he continued."It is a pleasure to revisit the project after an extended period of time and make a new mark on the landscape." The sculpture was funded by Arts Council council leader, Steve Pitt, said: "Over five decades, the Portsmouth Markers have been recognisable fixtures of our seafront."The sculptures are the only remaining artworks from a 1974 citywide sculpture exhibition so it's great to see the full set completed by the current addition as part of today's sea defence project." TT bike sculptures raising 'vital funds' for Manx Cancer charity
An art project featuring a variety of decorated motorcycle sculptures on show at the TT Grandstand is helping to raise "vital funds" for a new cancer support Cancers Support Group's Wheelie Good Cause appeal created 15 "legends" bikes, which spectators have been able to view and take photos with at the 2025 Stokes from the charity said fans had thought the life-size models of racing motorcycles were "amazing, and they don't believe how good they look close up".She said an auction planned for Senior Race Day would instead be taking place at the 2026 TT Races to allow for more money to be raised via the scheme. "We've been named as the official charity until the next event, so we're able to fundraise for another year before they're auctioned off to the highest bidder," Ms Stokes said."It also allows us more time to showcase the full power and story of the 15 stunning sculptures in our legends series, in which each model has been inspired by an iconic TT bike from the past 50 years," she added. The exhibit, which honours TT riders and machines from the past, features sculptures recognising the careers and efforts of the teams that support the Stokes said there was also "a marshal's bike, because they're are legends". She said the bikes recognising 26-time Isle of Man TT winner Joey Dunlop's career had "been very popular". "Everybody's got their own favourite."Former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond stopped by, and riders such as John McGuinness also went to see the sculpture that marked his 2007 Honda machine. Construction of the £2m Mannin Cancers Macmillan Support Centre, which is based on Maggie's Centres in the UK, began in February and is set to be completed by August."All of the volunteers are so grateful for all of the support we've received in person at the Grandstand," Ms Stokes funding raised will make a "massive difference", she added."It will all help towards the running cost were going to have with the new centre."The charity has been working with the Isle of Man TT races team and the Department for Enterprise on the project.
