Man pleads not guilty to sexually assaulting 10-year-old boy

(File pic) KOTA BHARU : An unemployed man pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to a charge of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy. Che Asmizan Che Jaafar, 34, is charged with committing the offence in an empty container near the Lembah Sireh bus station here at 8am on June 12. The charge is framed under Section 14 (d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which provides for a prison sentence not exceeding 20 years and whipping, if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented. Judge Zulkifli Abdullah set July 21 for mention and appointment of a lawyer.

Local councillor charged with raping woman at laundrette

KOTA BARU: A local authority councillor was charged at the Sessions Court here today with raping a 29-year-old woman late last month. Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, was charged before judge Zulkifli Abdullah under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction. He is accused of raping the woman at a laundrette in Kuala Krai about 2pm on May 29. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein. Jaya pleaded not guilty to the charge. Kamarul proposed bail be set at RM30,000 with additional conditions, including a warning not to disturb the victim. Ariff requested that bail be set at RM15,000, citing his client's responsibilities as a leader in the Indian community and the fact that he has 12 children, including stepchildren. The court allowed bail at RM15,000 with two sureties and fixed July 15 for mention. The accused was also ordered to report to the nearest police station once every two months.

KOTA BHARU: A Kuala Krai District Council member pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of raping a 29-year-old woman who was also his employee. The accused Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, made the plea after the charge was read before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. According to the charge, the alleged offence took place at a laundromat, Nikiysa 1909 Laundry, at PT 2430, Jalan KCP 2, Krai Central Park, at 2 pm on May 29. He is charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein, representing the accused, applied for bail on the grounds that his client has no prior criminal record, is a community leader within the local Indian population, and is active in business and social initiatives. 'The accused has 12 children, including two stepchildren, and is currently supporting 10 who are still in school. The proposed surety is his biological brother, who works as a plantation manager. Our client is also willing to report regularly to the police station,' the lawyer said. However, deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli objected to the bail application, citing the seriousness of the charge, and proposed a bail sum of RM30,000 along with additional conditions. The court allowed the accused a bail of RM15,000 with two local sureties, along with several conditions, including surrendering his passport, reporting to the police every two months, and being strictly prohibited from harassing the victim in any way. The court set July 15 for mention.

Man charged with illegal possession of 4,000 litres of diesel in Pasir Puteh

KOTA BARU: A 25-year-old man was charged in the Sessions Court here today with dealing in nearly 4,000 litres of diesel without valid authorisation in Pasir Puteh in February last year. Afiq Hazwan Azmi, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. The accused allegedly committed the offence at Lot PT 150, Jalan Kampung Gong Kala, Sungai Petai, Pasir Puteh, during a joint operation conducted by the state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Pasir Puteh district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department at 5am on Feb 2, 2024. During the raid, the accused was allegedly dealing in 3,993 litres of diesel stored in several Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs). The accused and several others were said to have fled the scene but were later tracked down by police and investigating officers. He was charged under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961, read together with Regulation 3(1) of the Control of Supplies Regulations 1974. The prosecution was led by ministry prosecuting officer Muhammadi Iman Masjuri, while the accused was represented by the legal firm Azrul Hasyimi & Co. The prosecution proposed bail at RM30,000 with additional conditions, including monthly reporting to the ministry's Kelantan office, refraining from contacting witnesses, and surrendering his passport to the court. The court set bail at RM15,000 with two sureties and fixed July 27 for mention and submission of documents.
