‘Severe Diarrhoea Elimination Campaign' launched in Karnataka's Dharwad
The Dharwad district administration in Karnataka has launched the 'Severe Diarrhoea Elimination Campaign – 2025', in order to prevent life-threatening dehydration caused by diarrhoea in children below the age of five years. The campaign will run untill July 31, 2025, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Divya Prabhu G.R.J. said during its launch at the District Hospital in Dharwad. The campaign will be held in all health centres, sub-centres, and hospitals of the district. ASHA and other health workers will also be conducting awareness programmes in schools and Anganwadi centres. The DC stated that diarrhoea can lead to dangerous levels of dehydration in children, which can be fatal. She emphasised that this can be prevented by administering the correct dosage of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and Zinc tablets. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the number of child fatalities due to severe diarrhoea to zero. 'When a child suffers from diarrhoea, ORS and Zinc should be administered promptly to avoid dehydration. Parents are encouraged to visit the nearest health centre to avail free treatment,'' she said. Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhuvanesh Patil said that mothers should take special care of children suffering from diarrhoea, and urged them not to stop breastfeeding during that time, as doing so may increase the risk of dehydration. District Health and Family Welfare Officer S.M. Honakeri informed that there are 2,07,837 children below the age of five in the district. The campaign aims to raise awareness and prevent diarrhoea among these children. He said that this can be achieved through maintaining cleanliness, washing hands properly, and ensuring hygiene during food preparation. District Surgeon Sangappa Gabi emphasised that parents should bring their children to the hospital promptly so that they can receive appropriate treatment and avoid life-threatening situations. Resource persons T.A. Shepur, Dr. Varsha, and Dr. Megha delivered lectures on diarrhoea prevention, dangerous symptoms, and the precautions mothers must take to avoid dehydration in children. District RCH Officer Sujata Hasavimath and others were present, according to a release.

Officials told to spread awareness about ‘doorstep ration delivery for elderly'
Pushpa Amarnath, Vice-Chairperson, Karnataka State Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee, said on Wednesday that provisions are in place for doorstep delivery of ration to cardholders aged 80 years and above and instructed Gram Panchayats to create awareness and ensure that eligible beneficiaries avail themselves of the facility. Speaking at the guarantee schemes' progress review meeting in Pandavapura, Ms. Amarnath addressed concerns related to the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. She noted that benefits to 1,422 women in the district had been withheld after being mistakenly flagged as Income Tax (IT) or GST payers. 'If it is confirmed that these beneficiaries are not actual taxpayers, the issue will be taken up at the State level and resolved, ensuring 100% implementation,' she said. Elaborating on the State government's commitment to food security, she said, 'No poor person should suffer from hunger under any circumstances. It is with this vision that the government has given top priority to the Anna Bhagya scheme.' She stressed that fair price shops must maintain both quantity and quality in food distribution and instructed officials to carry out surprise inspections to ensure compliance. 'No poor family should be denied government benefits,' Ms. Amarnath said. Deputy Commissioner Kumar said both rice and ragi are being supplied as part of the ration distribution and assured that the process will be completed within the next two days. A PAN card is not mandatory to open a bank account, he clarified. 'Necessary directions will be issued after consulting lead bank officials,' he added. Referring to 1,422 women flagged under Gruha Lakshmi, Zilla Panchayat CEO K.R. Nandini said that confirmation has been received from the GST and Income Tax departments that these women are not taxpayers. Committee member Rudrappa pointed out that linking PAN and Aadhaar during bank transactions is leading to incorrect classification of individuals as taxpayers, which needs to be addressed. During her visit, Ms. Amarnath met Jayalakshmamma, a vendor who sells flowers, fruits, and pooja items at the Pandavapura Railway Station with the help of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. Ms. Jayalakshmamma said, 'The Gruha Lakshmi and Shakti schemes have been helpful for me. I am able to save ₹100 to ₹150 daily, thanks to the Shakti scheme. I sincerely thank the State government for the support.' The Vice-Chairperson felicitated Ms. Jayalakshmamma with a garland and congratulated her.

The meeting focused on the implementation of the Right to Education Act (RTE) 2009, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (PoCSO) Act 2012 and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015. The session was attended by commission members, officials from various departments at the district and taluk levels and heads of childcare institutions. Discussions centred on child-related programmes and their implementation status. Mr. Gowda stressed that all departments working in the field of child welfare must function in coordination to protect children's rights and to bring them into the mainstream. He emphasised the importance of collaborative action in ensuring that children receive the protection and care they deserve. Presenting data during the meeting, Child Protection Officer from the District Child Protection Unit Elenagappa said that between April 2024 and March 2025, a total of 123 child marriage cases have been prevented in the district. Of these, 11 actually took place and First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed in all the 11 cases, he said. In the period between April and May 2025, 45 cases of child marriage attempts have been recorded, while 11 have occurred. FIRs have been registered in four of those cases. Responding to the report, Mr. Gowda directed that whenever incidents of child marriage are identified, the authorities concerned must immediately visit the homes of the boy and girl involved. 'The officers should engage in meaningful counselling with parents, obtain a written undertaking and clearly inform them that marriage should only be conducted after the child turns 18. Officials from the local gram panchayat, including the Panchayat Development Officer, the Tahsildar, Executive Officers, and representatives from the Education, Health, Police and Child Protection departments must work together in these matters,' he said, directing the officials to file FIRs without any delay in cases where child marriage has occurred.
