Feast your eyes at garden show

KLOOF Conservancy is once again showcasing indigenous flora with its 25th Indigenous Open Gardens Show on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22 from 09:00 to 16:00. From gorgeous gorge edges to meandering grassland pathways, there is something for everyone as artists and crafters showcase their talents. Various conservation organisations will share insights on birds, butterflies, snakes, monkeys and frogs. Plants and food will be on sale and there will be a treasure hunt for children. Tanya Visser, Highway's celebrity garden guru, will open up her garden (garden 6), allowing visitors a glimpse at interesting and unusual plant collections, or a chance to relax with a picnic. Also read: Traci finds joy in the little things Garden 2 presents a rare opportunity to visit the grounds of the stone mansion at TWIMs and see the extensive gardens that are embracing our local plant heritage. The Flora and Fauna Publications Trust and renowned indigenous plant expert Dr Elsa Pooley will be at Garden 4 to sign copies of her new book South African Indigenous Garden Plants. Tickets are R35 per person for entry at each garden. Entry is free for kids under 12 years. Payment is either cash or Zapper, and proceeds go to local conservation projects. Details are available on the website: Garden No 1 – The home of Helen and Allan Westwood, 5 Everton Road, Kloof. This garden has never been on show before and has undergone renovation in the recent past. As such it offers a blend of established and new plantings and numerous interesting features. This garden is mostly flat and relatively easy to walk about. Parking is available on the verges. Garden No 2 – The Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies (TWIMS), 74 Everton Road, Kloof. This garden has previously been on show with the Rotary Anns but has since been significantly changed with large new gardens and a wetland. It offers a blend of intimate gardening (the original garden) and an extensive corporate garden. This is a large site with lots of 'extras', so allow enough time for the visit. The property can be divided into four distinct garden areas. This garden is flat and has excellent paved paths. Direction arrows will indicate commended route through the property. There is parking on the premises. Garden No 3 – The home of Betsy and Ant Kee, 5 Pearson Road, Everton. This is a well-established garden with a 'park like' feel and numerous interesting trees. This garden is relatively easy to walk about. Funds raised at this garden will be donated to the Mend-the-Molweni Project. Verge parking is available. Garden No 4 – The home of Shireen and Gary Borchardt, 7 Falls View Road, Everton. This stunning first time on show garden is packed with a range of indigenous species on the edge of Krantzkloof Nature Reserve. It is at its best during the winter season so people can expect a colourful display. This garden has a level area which is easy to walk through, but a large part of the garden is on a slope with good paths but challenging for those with walking difficulties. This is at the end of a cul-de-sac on a narrow road and verge parking is available. Garden No 5 – The home of Heather and Laurence Balcomb, 8 Kenelm Road, Everton. Under the previous owner this garden was proudly 'wild' but has been mildly tamed as some structure was introduced to sections of the garden without detracting from its wild nature. There is a small but 'productive' grassland and an extensive forest section to explore. This garden is relatively easy to walk about although there is a forest path which is uneven and on an incline. Garden No 6 – Izolda and Tanya Visser, The Potting Shed, 6 Controversy Drive, Assagay. This garden is now a regular feature of the garden show, and the Kloof Conservancy continues to feature it because of Izolda and Tanya's passion for encouraging gardening and all that it entails. Visser regularly rejuvenates the garden and there is always something new to see. This garden is relatively easy to walk about but it does have some stairs in places. Deltarune Chapter 3: Every recruit and where to find them

Deltarune Chapter 3 brings a fresh set of characters to recruit, and each one has a unique style, personality, and way to join your team. The game's recruit system lets you spare enemies and add them to Castle Town if you manage to show mercy the right way. But some of these characters are hidden in tricky places, and if you miss the chance or accidentally knock them out, you won't get them back. Chapter 3 recruit list and locations So, here's a detailed guide on all eight recruits in Chapter 3 of Deltarune, along with how to recruit them and where they show up: Elnina: Elnina looks like a small cloud and only appears near the end of Chapter 3. She's easy to walk past, especially if you're rushing. Keep exploring every path before the final area to spot her. You need to be gentle and spare her with kind actions. Lanino: A bright, sun-shaped enemy with music-based attacks. Lanino's moves follow a beat, so you have to time your Act commands to match the rhythm. If you press too early or too late, you'll miss the chance. Stay focused, and don't try to attack. Pippins: Pippins shows up in the factory-style zones toward the end. He seems nervous and doesn't attack too much. He's best handled with defensive tactics. Focus on protecting yourself and building mercy instead of going aggressive. Ribbick: This frog-like enemy uses his tongue for long-range hits and likes to jump away mid-fight. You need to act quickly with commands like 'Calm' or 'Wait,' or he'll escape before you can recruit him. Shadow Guy: One of the first enemies you'll meet. He wears a black cloak and has flashy, fast moves. Instead of fighting back, try using pacify-type commands early. It's a good idea to learn how to deal with him since he shows up more than once. Shuttah: A constantly spinning enemy that almost never comes alone. You'll face them in groups, and the best way to spare them is by coordinating moves. Don't hit them. Instead, find peaceful actions that can calm them together. Water Cooler: This one's both funny and strange. It's a living watercooler. It doesn't fight or move much, but it's very easy to miss if you don't look around properly. Just interact and spare, no fight needed. Zapper: Found in the tech-style rooms, Zapper floats and sends electric sparks. Don't charge in, but use moves that disarm it or cool it down. If you get hit too much or use damage-based actions, it'll get too scared and disappear. Note: Do not make this one mistake or they will be gone In Chapter 3, if you beat an enemy instead of sparing them, they won't appear in Castle Town. That enemy type becomes marked as 'Lost,' and you won't get another chance. So it's best to avoid attacking and stick with peaceful options when trying to recruit.

Comfy shoes to make dreams come true

COMFORT meets compassion this May as South Africans gear up to celebrate Slipper Day on Friday, May 31, in support of the Reach For A Dream Foundation which is devoted to making dreams come true for children battling life-threatening illnesses. With the theme Do It For The Dreamers, this year's campaign encourages people to not only wear their quirkiest, comfiest slippers for a day, but to walk in the shoes, literally and figuratively, of the brave young dreamers who spend much of their time in slippers due to illness. Kerry Donkin, regional manager for Reach For A Dream in KZN, Free State, and Northern Cape, says Slipper Day is the foundation's largest national fundraiser. Also read: Briardene organisation opens the doors to education 'It's the perfect way for corporates, schools, and individuals to get involved and help make a child's dream come true,' said Donkin. 'These dreams vary from meeting celebrities to tasting ice cream for the first time; and we do everything we can to make them happen.' Reach For A Dream supports children aged three to 18 who are diagnosed with one of 110 life-threatening illnesses, including cancer, liver and heart conditions, renal failure, and muscular dystrophy. Each dream is tailored to a child's unique desires and medical limitations. 'We always listen carefully to the children and learn what truly brings them joy,' said Donkin. 'We want to encourage dreamers that tomorrow is worth fighting for. Their dreams matter. By supporting Slipper Day, you can help convey this message to our courageous dreamers across South Africa,' she added. Also read: Tee off in Mount Edgecombe and help save lives Supporting Slipper Day goes beyond buying a pair of fluffy footwear. Participants can purchase a R20 sticker, the official symbol of support, from major retailers including Wimpy, Pick n Pay, Dis-Chem, Dis-Chem Baby City, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Krispy Kreme, and Hush Puppies. Virtual stickers and merchandise can also be bought from the Reach For A Dream website – Thanks to Zapper, purchasing stickers online is now as easy as scanning a QR code. As a bonus, Wimpy is offering a free Famous Coffee (or hot chocolate for kids under 12) to anyone wearing their sticker and slippers on May 31.
