Benches clear in Anaheim after Zach Neto hit by pitch
ANAHEIM, Calif. — There appears to be no love lost between Zach Neto and Hunter Brown. Neto, the Los Angeles Angels' shortstop, made that known when he was hit on his right wrist in the third inning of a 3-2 Houston Astros win Friday. Brown's 95 mph sinker ran in, and Neto, who crowds the plate, couldn't get out of the way. The benches cleared, words were yelled, but there were no ejections. Neto was particularly upset because it's the second time Brown has hit him, dating back to a hit-by-pitch in a similar situation last season. 'You go back to the history that we have, it's not the first time that he's done it,' Neto said. 'For him to go up and in like that again, it's just enough is enough.' Advertisement Brown, predictably, saw it differently. 'Yeah, I mean, honestly, he almost swung,' the Astros starting pitcher said. 'So I don't know what he's talking about. Guy stands right on top of the plate, doesn't like when he gets hit, that's his problem.' The rest of the game was played without incident, though Angels slugger Mike Trout was hit by a pitch later in the game, as was infielder Luis Rengifo. Neto said he and Trout told their pitchers to stand down and that he doesn't think the bad blood rises to the level of the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, who had a bases-clearing incident the night prior. 'He throws hard. You don't want to get hit,' said Neto, who made it clear he has respect for Brown. 'I know he's not trying to hit me, but it's definitely frustrating.' Angels rookie Christian Moore, who made his big-league debut exactly a week ago, was the first player in Brown's face as the situation escalated. 'That's our shortstop; he's a leader on this team,' Moore said. 'He needs me out there, and we need him on the field. I'm just defending my guy, that's all it is.' This is the second time Neto has been in the middle of a bases-clearing incident this season. Against the Detroit Tigers in May, Neto jawed with Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. That situation ended with Skubal apologizing to Neto and the two nodding to each other. And Brown has a point. Neto has been hit a lot during his career because of where he stands in the box and his load-up to swing. He has been hit 36 times in just 296 big-league games. 'I've got to command the inside part of the plate, that's part of my game,' Brown said. 'And like I said, if you want to stand with your toes on the chalk, you can't really get that upset when I'm throwing a pitch that you're almost swinging at. So, I stand by what I do.'

Peña led off the 10th with a single that advanced automatic runner Dubón to third. Dubón scored when Hunter Strickland, who hadn't allowed a run in 14 2/3 innings of his first 13 appearances with the Angels, threw a pitch behind the back of Paredes. Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi gave up home runs to Pena and Paredes for a 2-0 Astros lead in the held the Astros to four hits, striking out nine and walking none, for the rest of his seven-inning start. Jo Adell trimmed Houston's lead to 2-1 in the fourth with a 426-foot homer off Astros starter Hunter Brown. Angels rookie Christian Moore, a first-round pick out of Tennessee in 2024, tied it 2-2 with his first major league homer to open the seventh. Tempers flared in the third when Brown hit Angels shortstop Zach Neto in the elbow with a 95-mph sinker. Both benches and bullpens emptied, but no punches were thrown, and order was quickly restored. Advertisement Key Moment Astros center fielder Jake Meyers raced to the gap in left-center to make a spectacular, full-extension diving catch of Adell's drive with a runner on first base and one out in the bottom of the eighth to preserve a 2-2 tie. Key Stat The home runs by Peña and Paredes marked the first time in three years the Astros have opened a game with two homers. Jose Altuve and Peña last accomplished the feat on July 24, 2022 at Seattle. Benches clear in Astros-Angels after Zach Neto takes exception to Hunter Brown HBP
Zach Neto had something to say to Hunter Brown. (Photo by) Friday's game between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels got interesting in the third inning, courtesy of a hit-by-pitch for Zach Neto. With an out and a man on second, the Angels shortstop appeared to take a 94.8 mph sinker to his hands from Astros starting pitcher Hunter Brown. Neto was visibly furious about the pitch, yelling "That's twice," at Brown, who hit Neto with a different pitch last season. Advertisement Brown took exception to Neto's reaction, repeatedly and profanely telling him to stop crowding the plate. Cue the benches clearing, though with no punches thrown or ejections. Both Brown and Neto were guided away from each other. Still in the game, Neto reached second on a Mike Trout walk but failed to score after Brown got the third out on a grounder from Taylor Ward. It's worth noting that Brown might have had a point about Neto's proximity to the plate. Despite being one of MLB's smaller players at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, he is tied for ninth in the majors in hit-by-pitches with 36 since entering the league in 2023. The ball wasn't even that far off the plate on Friday, but Neto's hands swung around and ended up in an unfortunate place. Advertisement It's not a particularly pleasant part of his game, but his batting stance does get him the occasional free pass. As Neto said early in his career when asked if he's used to getting hit by pitches: 'I am. In college they tell us, 'Don't move your feet.' If the pitch is there and it hits you then it's a free base … on base percentage goes up.' Brown finished his night with two hits and one run allowed in five innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. His ERA sits at an AL-best 1.88 through 15 starts.
