Grizzlies' 7-foot-4 phenom allegedly blazed through 55-mph zone in Indiana

Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey was reportedly stopped in Indiana for allegedly speeding through a 55-mph zone earlier this month. The 7-foot-4 basketball player was charged with reckless driving and will make a court appearance in Tippecanoe County next week, according to online records. Edey was clocked going around 101 mph on Indiana 25 on May 1, the Journal & Courier reported, citing a police affidavit. Edey reportedly said he was trying to pass another vehicle, which was his reasoning for speeding. Edey, who stands at 7'4", was the ninth pick of last year's NBA Draft after winning the Naismith Player of the Year in his final two seasons as a Boilermaker. He was named to the All-Rookie First Team, putting up 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest. He recently underwent ankle surgery that could result in his missing the start of the 2025-26 season. Edey needed the procedure to repair and restabilize his ankle after spraining it again during offseason training last week. The Grizzlies said the 7-foot-4 Canadian would be evaluated again in four months, which is less than two weeks before the 2025-26 season opens Oct. 21. Edey missed 12 games early in the season because of a sprained left ankle. He went on to play in 66 games, making 55 starts. His Grizzlies clinched the eight-seed in the Western Conference, but were swept by the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, who are one win away from their first championship since moving from Seattle, in the first round. Grizzlies-Trail Blazers Trade Report Surfaces After Zach Edey News

Grizzlies-Trail Blazers Trade Report Surfaces After Zach Edey News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After their first-round loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs, the Memphis Grizzlies have officially shifted their focus to the offseason and what could be next in store for the team. Advertisement The Grizzlies have quite a few major decisions to make in the offseason. This is especially true after the team recently announced that big man Zach Edey underwent ankle surgery and will be re-evaluated in four months, meaning there is a chance he misses the beginning of the 2025-26 NBA season (h/t Grizzlies PR on X). With Edey's outlook for next season a bit uncertain, Memphis may have to bolster its roster to make up for his potential absence. On Friday, a recent report surfaced between the Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers that could land them the reinforcement they need. It remains to be seen who they may pursue, but recent reports have linked them to a current Trail Blazers forward: Deni Avdija (h/t Chris Dodson of Clutch Points). Advertisement According to Dodson, the 24-year-old "has emerged as a trade target" for Memphis. However, Dodson also reports that no deal is imminent. "Although it is understood that no deal is imminent, Deni Avdija (Portland Trail Blazers) has emerged as a trade target for the Grizzlies in multiple conversations with league sources. In his first season with the Trail Blazers, Avdija averaged 16.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1 steal while shooting 47.6% from the field and 36.5% from the three-point line. Somebody like Avdija could be a good addition for Memphis. If they do land a trade for him, it would give the Grizzlies the flexibility to move Jaren Jackson Jr. at the center position more often while Edey is out. Advertisement While he may not be a flashy name, Avdija might be a fantastic trade target for the Grizzlies. However, because nothing is official just yet, this will be something worth monitoring throughout the offseason.
