Ukrainian girl in Israel for life-saving leukemia treatment tragically killed by Iranian air strike

A 7-year-old girl who left war-torn Ukraine to get life-saving leukemia treatment in Israel has been killed by an Iranian air strike, according to 'heartbroken and devastated' Israeli officials. Nastia Borik died when an Iranian missile struck their apartment in Bat Yam last weekend — with her mom, grandmother and two cousins killed alongside her, Israeli officials said. Trump can keep control of National Guard troops deployed to Los Angeles, appeals court rules

An appeals court on Thursday allowed President Donald Trump to keep control of National Guard troops he deployed to Los Angeles following protests over immigration raids. The decision halts a ruling from a lower court judge who found Trump acted illegally when he activated the soldiers over opposition from California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The deployment was the first by a president of a state National Guard without the governor's permission since 1965. 5 Members of the California National Guard and police officers wear gas masks as they form a barier at a loading dock of the Roybal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles on June 12, 2025. AFP via Getty Images In its decision, the court concluded that 'it is likely that the President lawfully exercised his statutory authority' in federalizing control of the guard. It also found that even if the federal government failed to notify the governor of California before federalizing the National Guard as required by law, Newsom had no power to veto the president's order. The court case could have wider implications on the president's power to deploy soldiers within the United States after Trump directed immigration officials to prioritize deportations from other Democratic-run cities. Trump, a Republican, argued that the troops were necessary to restore order. Newsom, a Democrat, said the move inflamed tensions, usurped local authority and wasted resources. The protests have since appeared to be winding down. 5 A protester holds flowers near members of the California National Guard guarding a federal building during 'No Kings Day' protests in Los Angeles on June 14, 2025. JOHN G MABANGLO/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock The ruling comes from a panel of three judges on the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, two of whom were appointed by Trump during his first term. During oral arguments Tuesday, all three judges suggested that presidents have wide latitude under the federal law at issue and that courts should be reluctant to step in. The case started when Newsom sued to block Trump's command, and he won an early victory from US District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco. 5 President Donald Trump sits in the Oval Office of the White House alongside members of his cabinet on June 10, 2025. 5 Protesters wave a Mexican flag on top of a destroyed car during the Los Angeles riots on June 8, 2025. Breyer found that Trump had overstepped his legal authority, which only allows presidents can take control during times of 'rebellion or danger of a rebellion.' 'The protests in Los Angeles fall far short of 'rebellion,'' wrote Breyer, who was appointed by former President Bill Clinton and is brother to retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. The Trump administration, though, argued that courts can't second-guess the president's decisions and quickly secured a temporary halt from the appeals court. The ruling means control of the California National Guard will stay in federal hands as the lawsuit continues to unfold.

US Embassy in Israel sends urgent notice to Americans stuck as Iran rains down missiles

The United States has started the voluntary evacuation process for U.S. citizens who wish to leave Israel amid the country's conflict with Iran. 'Urgent notice,' Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, posted on social media on Wednesday. 'American citizens wanting to leave Israel, the U.S. embassy in Israel is working on evacuation flights and cruise ship departures.' The U.S. State Department announced on Tuesday that it established a Middle East task force, operating 24 hours a day, to help coordinate support for U.S. citizens, diplomatic missions and personnel during the conflict between Israel and Iran. Tammy Bruce, the State Department spokeswoman, told reporters that the task force will help U.S. citizens stranded in regional trouble spots receive timely information, including travel advisories and security updates, through a website and hotline. 'Our commitment is to the safety and security of Americans around the world,' Bruce told reporters at the department's press briefing. Bruce denied that the department was caught flat-footed by the conflict's rapid pace. Given the rate at which Israel is dismantling Iran's chain of political and military command, the issue may be moot, particularly if, as U.S. President Donald Trump hinted on Tuesday and Wednesday, the United States becomes actively involved in the attacks. 4 Bruce denied that the department was caught flat-footed by the conflict's rapid pace. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Wesley Bell (D-Mo.), and 43 other House members sent a bipartisan letter to Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urging them to lay out to Congress the steps they have planned to evacuate American citizens from Israel. Read the latest on the conflict between Israel and Iran 'Americans in Israel are depending on our government for guidance and a pathway to safety,' the congressmen wrote. 'We understand the obstacles posed by the current security situation and the closure of Israel's airspace. Therefore, all available options, including evacuations by land routes and sea, must be explored.' The letter noted that constituents were already being directed to the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program registration page, without further clarity. 'We trust that you will honor your responsibility to protect the American people, no matter where they are in the world,' the lawmakers wrote. They sought answers by today.

US will strike North Korea if South attacked with nukes, South's spy chief nominee says

South Korea's nominee for spy agency director said on Thursday he believed the United States would strike North Korea with nuclear weapons if Pyongyang launched a nuclear attack against South Korea. 3 North Korean leader Kim Jong Un speaks while he inspects military factories, as he urges a ramp-up in shell production to meet modern warfare demands, at an unknown location in North Korea, on June 13, 2025. via REUTERS Lee Jong-seok made the comment during a nomination hearing in answer to a question if he believed Washington would strike the North and put Americans at risk from a country even if Pyongyang has deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles. 'Yes, that is my belief,' Lee said, after saying the hypothetical scenario of South Korea coming under the North's nuclear attack is directly related to the security alliance between the two countries. North Korea has for years pursued a nuclear programme and is believed to have stockpiled fissile materials to build atomic weapons although it has not tested a missile mounted with such a weapon. 3 US B-1B bombers stage joint drills with South Korean and US fighter jets over the Korean Peninsula sky. 3 The North Korean government calls the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile, in North Korea. Iran's supreme leader Khamenei warns Israel ‘the battle begins' hours after Trump called for ‘unconditional surrender'

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared 'the battle begins' in an ominous post Tuesday, hours after President Trump called for Iran's 'unconditional surrender.' 'In the name of #Haider, the battle begins. Ali returns to #Khaybar with his Zulfiqar.' Khamenei wrote on X in Farsi, referring to Islam's first imam, Ali, who won the Battle of Khaybar with the sword Zulfiqar. Khamenei's sinister message comes hours after the Islamic Republic's state media also warned of a 'surprise' on Tuesday night into Wednesday that the 'world will remember for centuries.' Israeli forces have wiped out Iran's anti-air defenses, giving them air space superiority over Tehran. Trump announced that a majority of Iran's air defense system had been eliminated in recent attacks, without giving more details. 'We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran. Iran had good sky trackers and other defensive equipment, and plenty of it, but it doesn't compare to American made, conceived, and manufactured 'stuff,'' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'Nobody does it better than the good ol' USA.' 7 An Israeli Air Force fighter jet is prepared to take off in an attack on Iran.
