Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Amakhosi to retain skipper
Kaizer Chiefs are set to retain the services of skipper Yusuf Maart beyond the expiry of his contract on 30 June. Maart, who has been with Amakhosi for three years, is reportedly in advanced talks to have his contract extended. According to UnplayableZA sources, Maart will be on the plane to the Netherlands for Chiefs' pre-season tour. The news comes at a time when Chiefs are busy with their recruitment processes ahead of the new season. They have already parted ways with four of their players from last season's squad in Sabelo Radebe, Ranga Chivaviro, Njabulo Blom and most recently Edmilson Dove. And while more players are expected to leave, Chiefs also ensuring that those who are in Nasreddine Nabi's plans stay. On Thursday, The South African reported that George Matlou is one of the players that could stay as he is on the list of players traveling to the Netherlands. Maart has seven goals and eight assists in 95 competitive matches for the Glamour Boys. Kaizer Chiefs skipper Yusuf Maart. Key Kaizer Chiefs star extends contract
Kaizer Chiefs are trying to build an exciting, youthful squad. However, retaining a handful of experienced heads will be key. Yusuf Maart has skippered the side and is on the brink of a new contract. Mart memorably scored a wonder-goal against Orlando Pirates in 2022. 'Mayele will only come to South Africa for a holiday and Amapiano' 29-year-old Yusuf Maart will stay on at Chiefs and play a vital role in their midfield, according to local reports from @UnplayableZA on X. At the start of 2024-2025, Mdu Shabalala was a critical component in the Chiefs side, operating from the number 10 role. His output was healthy, too. However, that has dwindled dramatically. In 27 league appearances last season, he only got four goals and an assist. Click for the story 30-year-old Edmilson Dove is the latest casualty. Kaizer Chiefs set to lose their captain for free?
Kaizer Chiefs may lose their captain Yusuf Maart if he is not offered a new contract. Reports indicate that the club has a two-year option on Maart's current deal, but there has been no indication from the team whether they plan to renew it. According to KickOff , Kaizer Chiefs had until the end of May to exercise the option to extend their captain's contract but ultimately chose not to do so. 'End of May is standard procedure to exercise the option. If a club does not exercise the option, the player is free to sign with someone else,' an experienced agent told the publication. 'Because it's Chiefs, the player might wait to see if they will still approach him (for renewal). He'll probably hold off other offers. 'No one wants to leave Chiefs, you know. If the player doesn't want to leave the team, he'll hold out until they tell him something,' added the agent. KickOff reported that Maart is still in the books of Amakhosi and might sign a new deal if offered. 'If Maart has not signed with anyone else, Chiefs can still come if they want to keep him with an offer. But if he signed elsewhere and Chiefs come after end of May, it would be too late. It can happen.' Kaizer Chiefs won their first trophy in 10 years by beating Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup and it was their captain who scored the winning goal. Fans have had mixed reaction to Maart'scareer at Amakhosi but his goal in the final has made him a fan favourite. Chiefs' Maart thanks ‘father' Kaizer Motaung
'When he speaks to us, we feel like anything is possible,' said the Chiefs captain. Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart has praised the support given to every player at Amakhosi by the club's founder and chairman Kaizer Motaung. ALSO READ: Chiefs' Lilepo and Sekhukhune duo win PSL Awards Amakhosi on Saturday ended a ten year wait for a trophy, when they beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 to lift the Nedbank Cup title at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Chiefs' Maart – 'Everyone loves and respects the chairman' And it was Maart who scored the winning goal, lashing home an excellent volley from the edge of the box with ten minutes left. 'Thank you for being like a father to each and every player since you started the club,' said Maart, according to the official Chiefs website. 'Everybody loves and appreciates the Chairman. When he speaks to us, we feel like anything is possible; through him we understand what the club stands for, and the responsibility we have to the millions of fans that support us through thick and thin. So I want to thank him. We are all very pleased to make him happy with this trophy.' Kaizer Chiefs will play away to Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership on Saturday, hoping to scramble into the top eight in their final two league games of the season. Chiefs are currently in ninth place on 30 points, after a disappointing league campaign. But there is still a possibility for them to qualify for next season's MTN8. Chiefs only trail eighth-placed Chippa United on goal difference, and are three pints behind seventh-placed Polokwane City. 'We haven't had a great season in the league, and that is something we will have to improve on, but we all fought as a team and put a lot of work into bringing the Nedbank Cup back to Naturena,' added Maart. 'More consistency' 'Cup games are different to league matches in a lot of ways, but mainly we want to build more consistency going forward.' Maart has had to deal with plenty of criticism since arriving at Chiefs in 2022, and playing for them during a difficult time for the club. The fans have often been on his back, even this season, though his winning goal in the Nedbank Cup final will surely have changed plenty of hearts and minds. 'I became aware of how much it meant when I joined the club and it wasn't easy because of the pressure of knowing what is expected at Kaizer Chiefs,' said Maart. My first two seasons were not easy but now in my third season, we have been rewarded with something great, which is something I deeply appreciate.'
