Bhambri-Galloway duo goes down fighting
Yuki Bhambri in partnership with Robert Galloway got a second chance as lucky-loser but went down fighting to Taylor Fritz and Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 1-6, [8-10] in the doubles pre-quarterfinals of the €2,522,220 ATP tennis tournament in London. Yuki and Galloway had lost the first round of the qualifying event to Rohan Bopanna and Sander Gille. The Indo-American pair did not win any ATP point but pocketed €`10,820. ATP 250 Boss Open: Bopanna Only Indian Left As Bhambri, Balaji Suffer Defeats
Last Updated: Rohan Bopanna advanced to the ATP 250 Boss Open quarter-finals as N Sriram Balaji and Yuki Bhambri exited Veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Belgian partner, Sander Gille, progressed to the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 Boss Open on Wednesday. However, fellow Indians N Sriram Balaji and Yuki Bhambri experienced less success, exiting the tournament with their respective partners. The third-seeded Bopanna and Gille defeated the local German pairing of Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 in one hour and 21 minutes. They are set to face American Taylor Fritz and Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the next round. India's top-ranked doubles player, Yuki Bhambri, partnered with American Robert Galloway, but despite a valiant effort, they lost their opening match. The Indo-American duo fell in two close tie-breakers, 6-7(5), 6-7(5), to Mexico's Santiago Gonzalez and American Austin Krajicek in one hour and 34 minutes. Balaji and his Mexican partner, Miguel Reyes-Varela, also fought hard but ultimately succumbed 7-6(5), 3-6, 5-10 to the second-seeded French pair of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul. Taylor Fritz Through In Singles Too American second seed Taylor Fritz progressed to the Stuttgart Open quarter-finals on Wednesday, defeating Frenchman Quentin Halys 6-3, 7-6(6). The world number seven, Fritz, fired 12 aces and hit 32 winners in the one-hour-and-23-minute match. The 25-year-old, a two-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist, will next face Hungarian Marton Fucsovics at the ATP 250 event. Fucsovics secured his quarter-final place by beating Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(4), 6-3. American third seed Ben Shelton also reached the quarter-finals, overcoming Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6(4), 7-5 in one hour and 50 minutes. The 20-year-old world number 35 will play either Czech eighth seed Jiri Lehecka or German Jan-Lennard Struff next. 'I'm really happy. Happy to get my first win here in Stuttgart," Shelton said. 'I thought I played great in the big moments today down the stretch, and I'm just really happy to be back on the grass competing. Genev: India's Yuki Bhambri and his American partner Robert Galloway suffered an early exit at the Geneva Open after losing their opening-round encounter against unseeded Germans, Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner, on Wednesday. The second-seeded Indo-American duo went down 6-7(3), 4-6 in a closely-contested Round of 16 match at the ATP 250 clay-court tournament, which serves as a final stop before the French Open. The loss marks another disappointing chapter in Bhambri's European clay-court campaign. Despite showing flashes of form with a runner-up finish at the Bordeaux Challenger last week, Bhambri and Galloway were unable to sustain their momentum in Geneva. The pair split €3,240 in prize money, but were denied ATP ranking points due to the early-round defeat. The first set proved to be a tight contest, with neither side able to break serve. But Schnaitter and Wallner held their nerve in the tiebreak, clinching it 7-3 to take the lead. The German duo maintained their composure in the second set, breaking once and serving efficiently to close out the match in straight sets. For Bhambri, the Geneva Open was another opportunity to gain rhythm ahead of the Roland Garros qualifiers and other clay events. However, the 31-year-old has struggled to find consistency on the red dirt this season. French Open 2025: Changing partners, clay remains the real test for Yuki Bhambri
Yuki Bhambri of India (Photo by) NEW DELHI: As the clay court season reaches its big stage with Roland Garros , it once again reinforces the point in Indian tennis that the focus is on doubles and not singles. Leading the charge on that front is Yuki Bhambri , who was once the flag bearer in the singles department. The year, though, didn't begin as Bhambri might have hoped. What has followed is a string of partner changes, not by design but by necessity, as Olivetti's injury and the volatile nature of the rankings forced Bhambri to adapt. His journey resumed with Croatian veteran Ivan Dodig at the ATP 250 in Montpellier. Since then, the Indian ace has had to recalibrate often. 2025 has so far witnessed Bhambri partnering with seven different players in 13 tournaments. Despite the instability, the results speak volumes. Bhambri (and Alexei Popyrin) clinched the ATP 500 title in Dubai, made it to the quarters at Indian Wells and Miami, and became India's No. 1 in doubles, overtaking Rohan Bopanna , who had held that position since October 2019. Speaking to before the Madrid Open, Bhambri acknowledged the highs and lows, "I think it's part and parcel of our tennis, of rankings going up and down. I think tennis rewards you for consistency, and I've had good success over the last few months or so, which has just shown in the rankings." On the red dirt, Bhambri hasn't had the best results in the run-up to the French Open. Four of his last five clay appearances ended in first-round exits, with Robert Galloway being his regular companion in the latest tournaments. The 32-year-old, however, remains undeterred. "When you move on to clay, it's a lot slower. So you have to have a lot more patience. You have to be prepared to hit a lot of balls. You have to be prepared to slide on the court, find your footing, you know, be prepared for the bad bounces at times. So you're playing a very slow and patient game," he added. The only exception to Bhambri's clay troubles came in Bordeaux, partnering Galloway again. The pair fought in the ATP Challenger final but fell just short, losing 6-7(1), 6-7(2) to the fourth-seeded pairing of Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler. His dethroning of Bopanna ended a 286-week reign, coupled with a steady upward trend in his doubles rankings since the COVID-19 pandemic, signalling a changing of guard. The old warhorse Boppana has again occupied the India No.1 spot in latest ATP doubles rankings. Still, Bhambri, who spends his days back in India mentoring kids at Roundglass Tennis Academy alongside his childhood coach Aditya Sachdeva, is far from satisfied. "I think the ultimate goal is to try and do better from here, to try and compete for more trophies. The French (Open) coming up, Wimbledon coming up soon in July, those would be the two key goals where I would really like to hopefully put my best foot forward and succeed," ht noted. There's respect too, for the man he succeeds: "Rohan has been an incredible ambassador for Indian tennis. Even now, he competes at the highest level. There's a lot to learn from him." With Roland Garros just around the corner, the elements of something remarkable are there, but the big question remains: Can Bhambri, amid all the changes and challenges, find the right formula on clay? Yuki Bhambri makes final in Bordeaux with Robert Galloway
Yuki Bhambri in partnership with Robert Galloway beat third seeds Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo of Brazil 6-3, 7-6(3) in the doubles semifinals of the €227,270 Challenger tennis tournament on clay in Bordeaux, France, on Saturday. In the final, the second seeded Indo-American pair will play fifth seeds, Francisco Cabral and Lucas Miedler. In the $100,000 Challenger in Tunisia, Siddhant Banthia in partnership with Alexander Donski was beaten in the doubles final 10-7 in the super tie-break by Hynek Barton and Michael Vrbensky. The champion team won 75 ATP points and $4,980. The runners-up got 50 points and $2,880.
