Majlis Ash'shura to host commerce minister on Wednesday

MUSCAT: Majlis Ash'shura will host Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, on Wednesday and Thursday, to deliver his ministry's statement in a public session. This was stated by Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Nadabi, Secretary-General of Majlis Ash'shura. He said: 'The council will discuss the statement of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion at its 13th and 14th regular sessions. The ministry's statement will address six main topics, the two sectors' contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP), the ministry's vision for the future of the industrial sector, the ministry's projects for the 2020-2023 period, an evaluation of free trade agreements, Nazdahir programme and the foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows.' The statement will elaborate on the efforts being made by the ministry to develop digital platforms and national initiatives such as Invest in Oman and evaluate the results of economic agreements signed with GCC countries and other countries, Al Nadabi said. Meanwhile, the Youth and Human Resources Committee of the Majlis Ash'shura on Sunday hosted Mohsin bin Hamad al Hadhrami, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and a number of specialists from the ministry, to discuss the ministry's efforts to empower and develop the national workforce in the energy and minerals sectors. The meeting was chaired by Younis bin Ali al Mandhari, Chairman of the Youth and Human Resources Committee. The Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals provided an elaborate explanation of the Ministry's role in supporting and developing employment policies, highlighting the most prominent obstacles facing institutions and companies operating in the oil sector and the innovative solutions required for the next phase to enhance employment and Omanisation opportunities in the oil and gas sectors The Committee members were briefed, through a visual presentation by a specialist from the ministry, on the ministry's efforts to enhance Omanisation in companies operating in the oil and gas sector as well as contracting and service companies. The visual presentation also provided an overview of the Energy Sector Human Resources Forum, an important platform for exchanging ideas and experiences and enhancing national competencies.

Shura Council to discuss series of draft laws, agreements during 10th & 11th sessions

Muscat: The Shura Council will hold its 10th and 11th regular sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, 20-21 May, during which it will discuss a package of draft laws referred by the government to the Council, along with several economic and social agreement proposals and follow-up instruments submitted by the members of the Council. This was announced Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, who stated that the Council, as part of its efforts to strengthen the legislative framework across various sectors in the Sultanate of Oman in line with 'Oman Vision 2040" and to meet citizens' aspirations for comprehensive and sustainable development, has been reviewing a number of draft laws referred by the government during the current regular session. He clarified that the agenda for the 10th and 11th sessions will include discussions on amendments to certain provisions of the Arbitration Law in Civil and Commercial Disputes, the Real Estate Registry Law, as well as the review and approval of the Civil Society Institutions Law referred by the government. Sheikh Ahmed added that the Council will also discuss the viewpoint of the Public Services and Utilities Committee regarding the Air Transport Agreement between Oman and the Kyrgyz Republic, in addition to examining the proposed mandatory military service for Omani youth, based on the report of the Youth and Human Resources Committee. The agenda for both sessions will also cover updates on several draft laws referred to the Council by the Council of Ministers, most notably the National Geospatial Data and Information Law, the Unified Industrial Regulation Law for GCC States and the Sports Organizations Law. Furthermore, the members of the Council will be briefed on the Air Services Agreement between the Government of the Sultanate of Oman and the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The State Council and Shura Council are scheduled to hold their second joint session next Sunday, 25 May 25, during which they will discuss disputed and divergent articles between the two councils regarding several draft laws, including the Anti-Human Trafficking Law, the State Revenue Collection Law, the Real Estate Regulation Law, the Telecommunications and Information Technology Law and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Law.

Muscat: The Youth and Human Resources Committee of the Shura Council met this on Monday with affected employees of Oman Air and representatives of the General Federation of Oman Workers to examine the circumstances surrounding the issuance of voluntary resignation notices to a group of employees excluded from the airline's new organisational structure. During the ninth meeting of the second annual session (2024–2025), the Committee listened to the concerns of employees impacted by the ongoing restructuring at Oman Air. The discussion focused on the implications of the restructuring, the severance benefits offered to affected employees, and the working conditions within the company. The meeting also included representatives from the General Federation of Oman Workers, who elaborated on their efforts to address the fallout from Oman Air's decisions. The Federation shared its perspective on the exclusion of employees from the company's new structure and highlighted their ongoing advocacy for the workforce. Discussions extended to potential solutions and demands proposed by the Federation, the details of ongoing legal proceedings, the number of employees affected by the voluntary resignation notices, and the involvement of relevant government authorities in addressing the issue. Additionally, the Committee engaged with the Federation on the Ministry of Labour's recent Wage Protection System decision. The dialogue explored the implications of the policy on the workforce and proposed solutions to mitigate any adverse outcomes. The meeting was chaired by Younis Ali Al Mandhri, Chairman of the Youth and Human Resources Committee, and attended by committee members.
