India vs England 2025 1st Test: Yograj Singh makes MASSIVE statement about Shubman Gill on captaincy debut, he says…
Shubman Gill (right) and Yograj Singh. (Source: X) Shubman Gill kicked off a fresh start for Team India in Test cricket, taking over the reigns from Rohit Sharma officially on Friday as the first match of the five-Test series against England got underway at Headingley in Leeds. Gill has now become fifth-youngest cricketer to lead India in Test cricket after Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri at 25 years and 285 days. Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Indian southpaw Yuvraj Singh, is someone who has kept a close eye on Shubman Gill along with his son. Yuvraj has been like a mentor to Gill since both of them were playing for Punjab Ranji Trophy team. Yograj Singh believes Gill needs to lead from the front and take the team forward along with him, much like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup. Gill has massive shoes to fill as he steps into the No. 4 position which has been left vacant by Virat Kohli after his retirement from Test cricket last month. Not only Kohli, Indian Test skipper Rohit Sharma also called time on Test career last month. With Jasprit Bumrah not keen on taking over as Indian captain and Rishabh Pant's inconsistent form, the Indian selectors didn't have any other choice apart from Shubman Gill. The first statement of intent comes from #YashasviJaiswal – a shot of pure authority to kick off #TeamIndia's innings! 🙌🏻 The opening pair is looking solid, & the sun is shining bright in England! ☀️🏏 Seekhne nahi, Sikhaane aaye hai 💪 Watch now 👉 — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 20, 2025 According to Yograj, Gill must set his individual run-scoring target and take the team forward with him. Yuvraj Singh's father also shared his prediction for the five-match series and believes India has the potential to conquer England for the first time in 18 years on English shores. 'A few days ago, I was talking to Yuvraj Singh about Abhishek (Sharma) and Shubman Gill. Yuvraj said he would have to lead from the front. As Shubman Gill goes out to bat, he has to stay at the crease for the maximum time. When a captain leads from the front, and scores run. It is important for Shubman to set a target of 100, 200 or 300. He has to lead from the front. He also has to take everyone forward together, just like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup. I believe India will win the series,' Yograj Singh was quoted as saying ANI news agency. Earlier, Yograj Singh had slammed MS Dhoni for ending the 'brotherly' culture in the Indian team. '(We had) Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble, and others. Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh), Yuvi (Yuvraj), Viru (Virender Sehwag), (Mohammed) Kaif, Zaheer (Khan) among youngsters. Combination of elder and younger brothers. That's why they could lead the youngsters and become the greatest of all time. And what we did? We burned out the whole house by just standing for one person. I won't name him. Where is he? See what happened,' said Yograj in an interview to Insidesport website. Meanwhile, Gill lost the toss in his first match as captain and Ben Stokes sent Team India in to bat first.

Yograj Singh rekindles controversy, takes veiled jibe at MS Dhoni's captaincy era: 'We burnt whole house by standing for one person'
Yograj Singh, the former India cricketer and father of all-round ex-cricketer icon Yuvraj Singh, is back again making headlines. This time, he once again targeted Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a.k.a. MS Dhoni, by making a controversial remark about the former Indian cricket captain. The 67-year-old Yograj Singh has been a staunch critic of Dhoni, seemingly after Yuvraj Singh was dropped from the Indian team under the former's captaincy era. Yuvraj was a consistent player for the player, especially in white-ball cricket, but after recovering from cancer, his appearances became less frequent during 'Thala's' captaincy. What did Yograj Singh say about MS Dhoni? During a recent interaction with InsideSport, Yograj opened up about the 'brotherly' culture in the Indian team during the Sourav Ganguly era, but things changed because of 'one man'. However, during the conversation, Yograj did not explicitly mention the name of the person, but all the signs indicated Dhoni. "(We had) Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble, and others. Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh), Yuvi (Yuvraj), Viru (Virender Sehwag), (Mohammed) Kaif, and Zaheer (Khan) among youngsters. "Combination of elder and younger brothers," quoted Yograj in the report. "That's why they could lead the youngsters and become the greatest of all time. And what we did? We burned out the whole house by just standing for one person. I won't name him. Where is he? See what happened,' he added. He did not stop there and went on to say that when people give love to Sachin, Yuvi, Gambhir and Viru, they will never go down the drain and will always be stars. Yograj lashes out at BCCI Yograj's controversial remarks have not come for the first time; before this, he has criticised Dhoni. In the same conversation, he also alleged that after Ganguli's era, the selectors had suddenly dropped several of the nation's top match-winners following the 2011 ODI World Cup victory. Legend Yograj Singh was right again. Yograj reminisced about how many legendary players were not given a respectful farewell, with their departures managed poorly and without a sense of responsibility or dignity. 'You (BCCI selectors) just destroyed these boys for no reason,' Yograj quoted InsideSport. 'Boys like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Kaif, VVS Laxman, and Rahul Dravid. You just made them go after 2011."

Yograj Singh Blasts BCCI Over Banning Digvesh Rathi For Celebration Row: "Nonsense..."
Yograj Singh, father of former Indian cricket team star Yuvraj Singh, came out in support of Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi who was suspended by BCCI over his controversial celebration. Digvesh grabbed headlines with his impressive show in IPL 2025 but his 'notebook' celebration split the internet. While some praised him for his passionate show, there were some who were not happy and the BCCI decided to impose a fine on him three times. He was even suspended for a game after an on-field spat with Abhishek Sharma over his celebration. However, Yograj was not happy with how the cricket board handled the situation and he even went on to call the action 'nonsense'. 'Come on man, don't fine them. It's okay. You are still friends with the bowlers. Everybody is not the same. Emotions go. Forgive them. Obviously, at the end of the day, you're friends, if you say sorry, the matter is over. Have a big heart and don't get into these petty things. What is this nonsense going on, fining kids,' Yograj Singh said on InsideSport. After winning the 2011 World Cup, India went through a tumultuous transition phase over the next two years, getting whitewashed 0-4 in away Test series against England and Australia. These defeats saw a number of Indian stalwarts getting dropped from the Indian team. The selectors had even unanimously decided that MS Dhoni would be sacked as captain, with former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath one of the key figures of the selection committee then. Reflecting on that episode, Yograj Singh, the father of former India star Yuvraj Singh, has brutally criticised Amarnath and co. "You (BCCI selectors) just destroyed these boys for no reason. Boys like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Kaif, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid. You just made them go after 2011," Yograj said, speaking to InsideSport. "You just destroyed the team after the 2011 World Cup. The careers of 7 players were put into the gutter. That is why were struggling," Yograj added.

Why Is Jasprit Bumrah Getting Injured? Yograj Singh Drops 'Gym' Bombshell
Yograj Singh, father of former Indian cricket team star Yuvraj Singh, dropped another bombshell as he suggested that 'going to the gym' can be a reason behind Jasprit Bumrah 's recurring injuries. In a recent interview, Yograj said that cricketers needed not go to the gym for maintaining their fitness and should instead work on increasing their flexibility. Bumrah's workload management has become a major topic of discussion in the last year with the BCCI even making it clear that he will not be playing all the five Test matches against England. Yograj went on to say that cricketers 'don't have to do bodybuilding' and even namedropped Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya in his verdict. 'Bumrah has been injured four times. You know why? That (gym) is the reason. There are other cricketers as well. Mohammed Shami. Hardik Pandya. You don't have to do bodybuilding. Back in the old days, West Indian bowlers like Michael Holding at that time they were all flexible. Viv Richards didn't go to the gym until he was 35," Yograj said in an interview with 🚨INSIDESPORT EXCLUSIVE🚨 Yograj Singh Said: 'I am shocked to see players go to the gym. We see so many injuries because players are going to the gym. Bumrah has been injured 4 times, you know why? Because he goes to the gym. Same for players like Mohd. Shami & Hardik Pandya'… — InsideSport (@InsideSportIND) June 17, 2025" rel="noindex, nofollow">InsideSport. Yograj explained that in his opinion, cricketers should only go the gym when they are 35-36 years old and if they continue to gym hard at the start of their career, their muscles may become stiff. 'I am shocked that cricketers go to the gym. The gym is meant for when you are 35-36 years old. Otherwise, your muscles are going to be stiff. But somebody should know what he's doing. Your strengthening starts from the age of 36-37 when you are going down. Then I can understand the gym will work," Yograj Singh said. 'But today, youngsters are going to the gym. That is why we have injuries. I can say that about 30-40 years ago, injuries were zero. Because in cricket, you need a very flexible, gymnast-like body. Do things with body weight like pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups and core (work). But please, for God's sake, stop sending cricketers to the gym," he added.

"I'm Going To Kill You, Man": Sunil Gavaskar's Sledging Incident In West Indies Revealed By Yograj Singh
Sunil Gavaskar 's exploits against West Indies is legendary. At a time when batters did not have high-end protective gears, Gavaskar faced the fearsome West Indies pace line-up and had an astounding average of 65.45 against the side. Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh and a former India cricketer, has revealed the kind of sledging that Gavaskar faced in West Indies. He mentioned the incident while talking about the repeated fines that was imposed on Digvesh Rathi during IPL 2025 for aggressive celebration. "You should have seen the West Indians. Ask Sunil Gavaskar. He will tell you. 'Oh, it's another man. Small man. I'm going to kill you, man. You have kids. Go home. You bloody this and this and this and this'. People like Michael Holding, Marshall and all the guys are coming and abusing you. Hitting you on the head, bruising you. Go to the hospital. But they were also very harsh words," Yograj Singh told Inside Sports. "So were the Australians. So were the south Africans. And why not? No one carries it outside. Till you go out of the way to destroy anybody's career. That is not acceptable." In the same interview, Yograj criticised former BCCI selector Mohinder Amaranath. After winning the 2011 World Cup, India went through a tumultuous transition phase over the next two years, getting whitewashed 0-4 in away Test series against England and Australia.
