‘Insightful experience': People praise Acharya Prashant for revealing Yoga's true meaning

New Delhi: On the occasion of International Day of Yoga, spiritual teacher and philosopher Acharya Prashant received widespread acclaim across the country for his transformative discourse titled "Yoga in the Light of the Bhagavad Gita." Delivered live from Goa and broadcast across more than 40 cinema halls in India, the event marked a unique spiritual milestone, turning theatres into arenas of introspection, reflection, and philosophical engagement. Citizens from cities including Raipur, Kolkata, Jodhpur, Goa, and Bilaspur expressed deep appreciation for the talk, saying it changed their understanding of yoga. IANS spoke to several audience members across the country, and a common sentiment emerged: Acharya Prashant has redefined the way millions perceive yoga, shifting the focus from physical postures to inner clarity and spiritual strength. "Yoga is not yoga, it's Yog," says a young seeker from Goa Nutan, a 24-year-old from Goa who attended the live session, said: 'I liked it. I am 24, and today, for the first time, I discovered the real meaning of yoga. Yoga is not about flexibility or posture; it is about achieving our highest potential. 'Yog' is the right word, it is not an exercise but a way to evolve.' Hitesh, another attendee in Goa, added, 'Today I realised that Yoga is about knowing who you truly are. I understood so many new things that were never clear before.' Raipur residents also experienced a spiritual shift A resident of Raipur told IANS: 'Earlier, I thought Yoga was simply about physical fitness. But after listening to Acharya Prashant, I now understand that yoga is about gaining inner clarity. To end sorrow, that is Yoga. Today gave me a whole new perspective.' Another viewer from Raipur said, 'Acharya Prashant speaks with such depth. He wants to cleanse the soul. He emphasised that a true Yogi is someone who knows themselves. It was a powerful message.' The Kolkata audience also finds a new purpose in Yoga. Attendees in Kolkata also echoed similar sentiments. 'Until today, I thought yoga was just about stretching and breathing exercises. But now I understand that Yoga is about identifying the root cause of our sorrow and eradicating it from within. That is what true yoga is.' Jodhpur audiences connect deeply with the Gita's message From Jodhpur, a viewer who was present there said, 'He explained the real meaning of Yoga. I used to think it was only about physical routines, but now I realise it's about becoming fearless, letting go, and reaching your best version.' Another local attendee noted, 'Acharya Prashant explained Yoga in such detail. It's not about bending the body, but transforming the self from within.' Bilaspur also sees spiritual awakening. A resident from Bilaspur said, 'Yoga is about reaching our highest potential. As Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, 'Yoga is disconnection from sorrow.' That truth hit hard today.' Another attendee remarked, 'Yoga is much more than physical fitness. It's about discovering the reason behind our sadness and overcoming it. Acharya Prashant gave us a deeper understanding of the Gita's teachings. It was a truly insightful experience.' The event, jointly organised by the PrashantAdvait Foundation and PVR-INOX, marked the first time the Bhagavad Gita was discussed in cinema halls — venues traditionally reserved for entertainment. Cities like Mumbai, Pune, Gurugram, Patna, Indore, and Bhopal witnessed audiences purchasing tickets not for a blockbuster movie but for a spiritual discourse rooted in ancient wisdom. Acharya Prashant's message offered a direct challenge to the commodification of yoga in the modern world. 'The Yoga of the Gita is not about physical flexibility. It is about inner invincibility,' he declared. "Arjuna was asked to rise, not to stretch. The ancient Yogis were not posing for social media likes,' Acharya Prashant said in his talk. 'They were warriors of truth. In the Gita, Arjuna was not told to meditate or do breathing exercises. He was stirred to act wisely in the midst of war. Yoga is your battle against inner inertia, against doubt, against fear.' A bestselling author of over 160 books, Acharya Prashant is the founder of PrashantAdvait Foundation. His interdisciplinary teachings fuse Vedanta, Buddhism, existential philosophy, and modern psychology, making the wisdom of Indian scriptures accessible and applicable in everyday life. He currently leads one of the world's largest Bhagavad Gita teaching programmes, with over one lakh active participants globally. His recent initiative — the world's largest Gita-based online spiritual examination — has drawn seekers from across continents.

By promoting yoga, India offered world path to holistic health: Yogi

Gorakhpur, June 21 (UNI) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said yoga is a timeless gift of Indian wisdom that has become a global symbol of well-being. Addressing yoga practitioners and trainers at Mahant Digvijaynath Memorial Hall on Gorakhnath Temple premises before joining them for yoga practice on the occasion of 11th International Yoga Day, the CM said that by promoting yoga as a tool for public welfare, India has offered the world a path to holistic health. He said that on the 11th International Yoga Day, nearly 190 countries are proudly embracing India's yoga tradition. "Yoga is a wonderful practice from India's sage tradition that keeps both the body and the mind healthy," he said. Yogi extended greetings to the people of the state on International Yoga Day, emphasising India's age-old reverence for yoga. Quoting the ancient saying 'Sharir madhyam khalu dharma sadhanam', the body is indeed the means to fulfill Dharma, he said that all four pursuits of human life, Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha, are rooted in physical well-being. He said, "A healthy body is essential not only for material success and personal fulfilment but also for spiritual advancement." He explained that yoga plays a vital role in keeping the body healthy so that one can pursue these goals. "India has always used yoga as a way to support public welfare and through this, it has also guided the world toward universal well-being." he said. The CM said, "Today we see many different aspects of yoga. India's rich tradition has introduced the world to higher states of awareness through yoga. From personality development to revealing the mysteries of the universe, this vast knowledge of yoga is preserved in our Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Smritis and other sacred texts." He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reviving and globalising India's ancient yoga tradition. "At a time when other countries were attempting to patent yoga postures, PM Modi took the historic step of securing global recognition for yoga through the United Nations. As a result of his efforts, International Yoga Day has been celebrated worldwide every year since June 21, 2015, with participation from 190 countries today," he said. Yogi said, "International Yoga Day is a way to honour our sage tradition and help future generations stay connected to this rich heritage,' he said. He also highlighted yoga's healing power, quoting the Sanskrit verse, 'Na tasya rogo na jara na mrityuh praptasya yogagrimayam shareeram', which means a body refined through yoga becomes free from illness, ageing and even death. Yogi expressed that it was his good fortune to participate in the International Yoga Day event on the sacred land of Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath. He said that he hoped the enthusiasm for yoga would lead to public welfare, social well-being, and the progress of the nation by ensuring healthy bodies and minds. Meanwhile, CM Yogi also watched and listened to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's live address at the Mahant Digvijaynath Smriti Bhawan in Gorakhnath Temple on the occasion. Afterwards, he practiced various yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation along with other yoga practitioners and trainees present at the hall. Yoga is an important and essential part of CM Yogi Adityanath's daily routine.

On Yoga Day, Deep Dive Into Pioneer Guru's Wisdom For Today's World

Last Updated: Yoga is not just a fitness routine, but a complete system for inner health. On International Yoga Day, here are some practical tips gleaned from the work of Shri Yogendraji Most of us associate Yoga with fitness and flexibility though that understanding barely scratches the surface. Shri Yogendra ji was the founder of the world's oldest organised Yoga centre—The Yoga Institute, Mumbai (est. 1918)—and devoted his life to showing that Yoga is not merely about the external body, but about inner health and living a balanced life. A householder Yogi, he simplified Yoga for people with work and family responsibilities. He was one of the first to apply Yoga scientifically—introducing Yoga therapy, exploring the impact of Yoga practices on the body, and even setting up a branch of the institute in the US. As we celebrate the 11th International Yoga Day today—themed One World, One Health—it's worth revisiting some of the whats, whys and hows of Yoga. Here are curated insights from the voluminous writings of Shri Yogendra ji.* 1. In Yoga, the Nervous System is of Paramount Importance. All practices aim at control, purification and strengthening of the nervous system—and not muscular display and strength. In Yoga, the body is only an instrument of education for the mind. Through Yoga's scientific training, all voluntary and major involuntary functions of the body can be brought under direct control of the will. 2. Yoga & The Body's Inner Functioning. Yoga has specific techniques that help manipulate the endocrine glands, as well as regulate blood supply to any part including vital organs like heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. 3. Yoga Is Gentler on Digestion Than Strenuous Exercise. During intense workouts, normal supply of blood gets diverted to the muscles and away from the digestive system. Yoga's effect on the digestive system is more beneficial than strenuous exercise because it does not deprive it of blood supply. 4. Prolonged, Rhythmic Breathing Improves Respiratory Efficiency. Increased oxygen in the blood during Yoga exercise gives richer blood to all other systems of the body. 5. Yoga Energises; It Does Not Exhaust. A well-regulated exercise should impart a sense of wellbeing and lightness. All movement must be practised lightly — and stop short of actual fatigue. Relax whenever fatigue sets in. This will minimise strain on the nervous system, as the perfect health of this system is the aim of most of Yoga. 6. Exercising Muscles of the Spine is Very Important. The small, deep extensor muscles along the spine hold the trunk and other parts, maintaining the natural posture for efficient functioning. This is why Yoga especially emphasises exercising the spinal column—through vertical, lateral, anterior, posterior, and torsional stretches. 7. The Right Amount of Yoga is 25–30 Minutes A Day. Sheer excess may cause changes in the muscles of the heart. Moderation in exercise is strongly recommended in Yoga. The standard daily dose of Yoga should be 25-30 minutes. Regularity (Abhyasa) is the cornerstone of success. 8. Mornings are Ideal for Asana Practice. Mornings, before breakfast, are best suited for Yoga exercise as vitality is highest and the movements can be performed with ease, freshness, vigour, and mental calmness. If that is not possible, evening before dinner is ideal, unless you are tired. In that case, relaxation poses are to be given priority. Ideally, first evacuate the bladder and bowels, clean the nose and throat of mucus, and drink a glass of room-temperature water. Then, after 15 minutes, begin Yoga exercise. 9. Don't Skip Yoga During Winter Months. Of all seasons, Yoga poses have to be done zealously and regularly in winter. This is to maintain normal circulation and to keep the blood warm for good health. 10. For People Above 80, Pranayama is the Best Yoga. Yoga exercises may be gradually omitted as they tend to strain the muscles that become inelastic with age. However, for those advised to curtail physical exercises, doing more of Pranayama practices gives promising results. This International Yoga Day, we can draw from Shri Yogendra ji's legacy to make Yoga not just a practice, but a way of balanced living.
