Seize free training opportunities via NTW 2025, Kuching MP urges S'wak youth

According to Yii, NTW 2025 is organised by HRD Corp in conjunction with the Asean Year of Skills, under the theme 'Learning Beyond Borders.' KUCHING (June 19): Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has called on young Sarawakians to actively take part in National Training Week (NTW) 2025, describing it as a valuable opportunity to equip themselves with future-ready skills for the digital economy. He noted that NTW 2025, recently launched by the Ministry of Human Resources at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, is free of charge and open to all Malaysians. 'The opportunities provided through this platform are highly relevant to the needs of our people, particularly in areas such as digital literacy and artificial intelligence (AI); entrepreneurship and financial planning; Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and technical skills; creativity, arts and innovation; as well as life skills and mental wellness,' he said in a statement. 'NTW 2025 provides a unique opportunity to gain practical, career-relevant knowledge through physical workshops, live online sessions, self-paced e-learning, and coaching programmes.' According to Yii, NTW 2025 is organised by the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) in conjunction with the Asean Year of Skills, under the theme 'Learning Beyond Borders.' 'This nationwide and regional initiative offers over 65,000 free training courses and 1,000 high-impact learning and development activities – all of which are accessible to all Malaysians and citizens across Asean,' he said. 'To date, NTW 2025 has recorded more than two million participants, surpassing its initial national target of one million. Of these, 40 per cent are enrolled in courses related to Industry 4.0, highlighting our nation's readiness to embrace future skills.' Yii, who is also political secretary to the Human Resources Minister, added that one of the standout features of this year's NTW is the 'AI-4-Educators' programme, which is launched in partnership with the Ministry of Education. 'The programme has successfully trained over 395,000 educators from across the country between April 7 and June 12 this year, earning recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest AI training participation among educators. 'This initiative reflects a bold step towards building a digitally literate and future-ready generation,' he said. Further information on NTW can be found at its website

MIRI (June 13): A group of 60 people gathered today at the World War II Memorial Park in Miri to pay tribute and lay wreaths in remembrance of the 28 victims executed by the Japanese during their occupation 80 years ago. Among those present was 87-year-old Linda Bodestyne Fluhart, whose father, John Bodestyne, was one of the 28 martyrs executed on June 13, 1945 by the notorious Kenpeitai (Japanese military police). It took Linda 72 years to locate her father's final resting place in Miri. Marking the solemn 80th anniversary of the execution, she attended the memorial with her two daughters, Lesley Carnegie and Sandy. Her third daughter, Adeline Carnegie of Perth, was unable to attend. Bandar Kuching MP welcomes people-centric move on LPG subsidy policy revision

Dr Yii noted that the enforcement had caused confusion and anxiety among small food vendors operating legitimate businesses. – Bernama photo KUCHING (June 6): Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has welcomed the federal government's decision to revise regulations on the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, calling it as a people-centric move that reflects the core values of the Madani administration. Dr Yii expressed full support for the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living's (KPDN) policy update, which now allows all small-scale food operators, particularly hawkers, to continue using subsidised gas without needing a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit (PBKB), provided usage does not exceed three 14kg cylinders (42kg) at any one time. 'The government's openness in handling this matter – by quickly engaging with feedback from grassroots hawkers, trade associations, and MPs from both sides of the aisle – ultimately led to a fair and rational policy revision. 'This inclusive and transparent style of governance once again affirms that Madani is not merely a slogan but a real, people-centred philosophy of governance,' he said in a statement. The revision comes in response to public concern over enforcement actions based on 2021 regulations introduced under the previous Perikatan Nasional administration, which restricted the use of subsidised LPG in efforts to curb abuse. Dr Yii noted that the enforcement had caused confusion and anxiety among small food vendors operating legitimate businesses. He also thanked Transport Minister and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke for raising the issue in Cabinet, saying his proactive stance helped bring about the timely policy shift. Dr Yii emphasised that many hawkers rely heavily on subsidised LPG as a basic necessity for daily operations. 'Forcing them to switch to commercial-priced gas would have driven up operational costs and food prices, ultimately burdening consumers and affecting the broader economy,' he said. While commending the decision, he urged the government to strengthen enforcement to prevent misuse. 'A transparent and efficient distribution system, combined with strict enforcement, is crucial to ensuring the long-term effectiveness of this people-oriented policy,' he added. Dr Yii concluded by reaffirming his commitment to supporting all initiatives that benefit the grassroots and contribute to the national economy stability, working alongside the government to build a more equitable, inclusive and progressive society. Yii (eighth left) raises the SUPP flag, as others look on. MIRI (June 5): Sixty-six years since its establishment, the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) has successfully demonstrated its spirit of struggle and commitment in helping to build Sarawak into a fast-developing, inclusive and progressive region. SUPP Miri-Sibuti Parliamentary Liaison Committee (MSPLC) chairman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said he was proud to join the party's members in celebrating the 66th anniversary, calling it an achievement of decades of dedication, service and unity in Sarawak and the nation as a whole. 'Since its establishment in 1959, SUPP has been a vocal advocate for the rights and welfare of the people of Sarawak and today, as we raise this (SUPP) flag, let it stand as a symbol of our shared commitment to building a strong, inclusive and progressive Sarawak,' he said. His text of speech was read by MSPLC vice chairman Adam Yii, who represented Lee, at the SUPP MSPLC flag raising ceremony held at the SUPP Piasau branch yesterday. 'Let us take a moment to reflect on the contributions of past leaders, who displayed courage and vision and laid the foundation for the progress we enjoy today. Their sacrifices remind us that leadership is about service, about standing up for what is right, and putting the people's interests above all else. We are indebted to them and we pledge to the carry the torch of this struggle with pride.' Lee said that since forming Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in 2018 together with the other component parties, SUPP has continued to play a vital role in shaping policies that empower the people and drive Sarawak's development. 'Together with our coalition partners, we have tirelessly worked to ensure that Sarawak's interests are always prioritised in every decision and action. SUPP within GPS has achieved many significant milestones, each one a vital step toward building a stronger, more advanced, and prosperous Sarawak for the benefit of its people,' he said. He also recalled some key achievements of SUPP alongside GPS, such as infrastructure development; economic growth; education and human capital development; sustainability and green development; as well as social welfare and community support, including the creation of the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) for senior citizens in Sarawak, alongside Sarawak community initiatives to ensure inclusive development that touches the lives of all level of society. 'As the people of Sarawak, we are stronger when we are united. Together, we can achieve Sarawak's full potential and ensure that no one is left behind in the tide of development. Amend Electricity Ordinance to protect new tenants, Pujut rep tells DUN

Yii says Sarawak Energy currently has the authority to reject electricity supply applications from new occupants if there are outstanding bills left by previous owners or tenants. – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (May 23): Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang has called on the Sarawak government to amend the Electricity Ordinance to enhance service delivery and protect the interests of consumers. Speaking during the debate on the Motion of Appreciation for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today, Yii highlighted an issue affecting new tenants and homeowners. He pointed out that Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) currently has the authority to reject electricity supply applications from new occupants if there are outstanding bills left by previous owners or tenants. 'This situation creates difficulties for many homeowners and new tenants who have no connection to the previous occupants, and it is unfair for someone to bear another person's debt. 'I urge for this ordinance to be amended so that if a new applicant can provide proof, such as a tenancy agreement or a statutory declaration, showing they have no ties to the defaulter, then Sarawak Energy should allow the reconnection of electricity supply,' he said. He also recommended the introduction of prepaid electricity meters, particularly for rental properties, saying the system offers several advantages. These include preventing arrears through upfront credit payments, reducing disputes between landlords, tenants, and Sarawak Energy, and encouraging responsible electricity usage. 'Most importantly, prepaid meters are more tamper-resistant and help reduce electricity theft and losses to Sarawak Energy,' he added. On a separate note, Yii raised concerns over delays and high costs faced by new entrepreneurs in Miri in obtaining piped gas connections from Sarawak Gas Distribution Sdn Bhd (SGD), a subsidiary of Petros. 'Applications currently go through multiple stages without clear guidelines or defined timelines. 'This can cause delays in operations, financial losses, and in some cases, the cancellation of business plans,' he said. To address this, Yii urged the relevant ministry and SGD to review the application process and introduce a fast-track mechanism for commercial users, including installation incentives for SMEs. 'We have successfully gained control over our gas resources, but that success must be translated into tangible benefits for the people and local entrepreneurs,' he said. adam yii DUN electricity bill Electricity Ordinance Sarawak Energy
