BBC fans rave about period drama starring Game of Thrones and X-Files stars made in 'golden age'
Charles Dance and Gillian Anderson star in the BBC period drama which is very similar to a soap opera in the way it was aired and will leave you hooked from the get-go. Drama lovers, brace yourselves for the explosive BBC period drama that promises edge-of-the-seat suspense with shocking reveals and a tantalising murder mystery at its heart. Kicking off with a full hour's episode, followed by two 30-minute instalments, this series made an entrance akin to a classic soap opera – even making its debut right after EastEnders, setting the stage for a whirlwind of tension and intrigue. Expect impressive turns from the likes of X-Files icon Gillian Anderson as the enigmatic Lady Dedlock, whose initially perplexing ways gradually draw you into the thickening plot that's sure to snag your attention. Charles Dance delivers as Mr Tulkinghorn, a shrewd lawyer who is on a quest for the truth. His portrayal came shortly before rising to fame as Tywin Lannister in the monumental HBO series Game of Thrones. Compelling performances from Anna Maxwell Martin, known for Motherland; Carey Mulligan of The Great Gatsby fame; and the venerable Timothy West heighten the series' captivating pull, reports the Express. Audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, leading to a hearty 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.3/10 rating on IMDb, indicating a resounding success. One five-star review encapsulates viewer sentiments: "Absolutely loved it. There's a feast for lovers of period drama here. The production values are top-notch. I especially enjoyed the natural lighting. The costumes, hair, set dressing, locations etc were all beautifully done. Nothing beats immersing yourself in the narrative of a period drama that whisks you away to life over a century ago. Period dramas are quintessentially British, and with the ultimate Downton Abbey film about to hit the screens, they're back in vogue. The early noughties was a golden era for this genre, yet one series that has slipped under the radar but is totally deserving of a re-visit is the BBC's 2005 adaptation of Bleak House. Central to the series is the endless litigation of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, which revolves around the inheritance battle over a colossal estate. The wearisome legal dispute has overshadowed the lives of all involved, resulting in exorbitant legal costs and jeopardising the very inheritance they are contesting. Moreover, when orphans emerge as potential successors and secrets start to come to light, the series delivers all the intrigue typical of genteel life in the 1800s.

David Duchovny reflects on how TV has changed since The X-Files
David Duchovny believes Netflix has wrecked TV "in a way". The 64-year-old actor doesn't believe any programme now could have the longevity or the reach of his former show The X-Files - which ran from 1993 to 2002 and another series in 2016, and also spawned two spin-off films - because there are so many programmes across many streaming platforms, meaning shows just "fade away" as the next big thing comes along. He told the Telegraph: 'Netflix kind of f***** the business in a way. Well, I mean, look at The X-Files, which had a foothold on the culture and then lasted. Now, there's just so much – things become incandescent for a year or two and then they just fade away.' Ryan Coogler is developing an X-Files reboot but without the original stars, though David wouldn't be against playing Fox Mulder opposite Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully one more time. He said: 'The X-Files frame is evergreen in terms of generating stories, and especially today. 'So it's like, well, how would we exist in a way that was different from the way we existed before, but still do interesting work?' At the height of the X Files popularity, many fans believed David was "privy" to real-life information about extra-terrestrial life. He said: "[Some fans thought] that I was privy to certain information. But, you know, I'm just an actor. I'm not privy to anything. One of the strengths of the show was that it appeared to be factual to certain people. 'That's the price of doing business.' The former Californication star understands the appeal of certain conspiracy theories because he believes a particular human strength is to 'weaponise or monetise information." He added: "When you look at conspiracies, it's really just people surviving by their wits.' David himself is interested in ideas around mind control. He said: 'I like any government that takes the expansion of human consciousness, and tries to figure out how to make a better soldier or politician or spy with that kind of information.' However, the actor isn't impressed by the "ridiculous" claims made by President Donald Trump and his administration. He said: 'It's like, oh, there's five new ridiculous things coming out of the White House today. Which am I supposed to focus on? That's the conspiracy, I guess. "I think it's probably the first time in history where the government seems to be deliberately promulgating falsehoods for the purpose of immobilising a people.'

She said: 'I thought, 'How is that ever going to work? She's so perfect, so glamorous, so beautiful. How is she going to capture me at such a raw moment in my life?' ' The tent sex scene with White Lotus star Jason did not feature in the book, but was added by writers for the movie adaptation, which was released on Friday. Raynor added: 'There's only one particularly hot scene in that book — I gave them big waves. I got back a sweaty scene in a tent.' 'But the fact that so much of my career as an actor — starting as Scully in my 20s, where suddenly I was consistently called on to be the smartest in the room — I was asked to show up and believe that I could do those things. "It showed that I had it somewhere in me to look that smart, to be that powerful, to be that confident, to walk that way.' Gillian was born in Chicago but raised in London during her early years. Most of the time when I show up to work, particularly at the beginning of a job, I think I am going to be fired. Every single job, the first two days are hell. Then the family moved back to the US when she was 11 and she later became a rebellious teenager. She went through a lesbian phase, was arrested and dabbled in punk — getting into what she called 'dangerous things'. By the time she was 14 she was in therapy . Ten years later, while living on benefits in Michigan, she landed the X-Files job — and found overnight global fame. But Gillian admits she still struggles to conform. She told the We Can Do Hard Things podcast: 'I always have been a bit of an outsider. I didn't really make a lot of friends in high school. 'My hair was always not unlike it is right now — ratty and not curled. 'Then I started wearing oversized thrift clothes, cinching it with a belt, pointy black boots with buckles, and I started to shave my head and have a Mohawk. Also, by then I'd had a lesbian relationship that they all knew about and teased me about. 'I was kind of on the outside.
