Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Credit Corporation (SCC) is now managing assets of RM3.864 billion, growing from its initial RM1 million seven decades ago, thanks to unwavering support from all key stakeholders. Chief Executive Officer Datuk George Taitim Tulas said SCC's audited profit before tax last year stood at RM117.29 million. Advertisement 'With our continued success, we have contributed dividends totalling about RM369 million to the state government. 'We have also paid RM141.6 million in loan interest and RM1.3 million in zakat,' he said during SCC's 70th anniversary celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre. He said SCC's corporate social responsibility programme has benefited communities with more than RM70 million worth of support, including infrastructure, medical equipment, donations and sponsorships. SCC has embraced digital transformation, including launching the YONO app and nearing completion of its risk management IT framework. George said its subsidiary, Manggaris IT, developed a digital parking system for local authorities that meets SAGA requirements and incorporates YONO. The system is currently in use in Putatan and will soon be extended to Keningau and Tawau. He added that SCC has partnered in state government programmes such as the Sabah People's Housing Scheme, the Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat Programme (SHUKUR), and the Dayang Programme to support affordable housing and financial assistance for the people. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who attended the event, said SCC's role in facilitating credit has led to tangible improvements in agriculture, light industries, rural development, urban housing and public utility projects. 'SCC has consistently improved asset quality, strengthened internal governance and upheld leadership accountability, which is commendable in any financial institution,' he said. At the event, SCC contributed RM1,277,793.45 to five recipients under its CSR projects. The recipients were SK Tempasak Togudon Penampang (RM349,980.65) to build a rural hostel, KK Lions Ambulance Service Society (RM243,800) to buy a vehicle, St John Ambulance Malaysia (RM235,012.80) also to buy a vehicle, Sabah Kidney Society (RM50,000) for pharmacy items for its haemodialysis machine, and SMK Limbanak Penampang (RM399,000) to build a rural hostel. SCC was founded on June 15, 1955, as the North Borneo Credit Corporation with a grant of one million dollars from the Japanese Compensation Fund. It was rebranded as Sabah Credit Corporation in 1972 to focus on financial inclusion and socio-economic development in Sabah. Also present were SCC Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai and Deputy Chairman Datuk Surinam Sadikum. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? New avenue to back charitable work via Lions
Published on: Monday, June 16, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 16, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Liaw receiving the presidential collar from Ting and witnessed by Eve as well as other office bearers. Kota Kinabalu: A new avenue has opened for kind-hearted individuals to support charitable work with the formation of the Lions Club of Api-Api. The club, led by its Charter President Chris Liaw Tze Ling, was launched during an induction and fundraising dinner held at Wisma Hakka Hall. Advertisement The event was officiated by Lions New Century Star City President Ting Shyh Tem and Constitutional Area Leader Eve Wong. 'This charter was established to create more platforms for compassionate individuals to contribute to charitable causes, and to ensure these efforts reach those who genuinely need help,' said Liaw. He said the club would channel its efforts through the Starfish Malaysia Foundation, which has built five hostels near schools in Kota Marudu, Sikuati, Kudat, and Pitas. The aim is to support students who would otherwise need to walk between four and twelve hours to attend school. Two choir songs were performed by students staying at the hostels as an introduction to the foundation's work during the dinner. 'The foundation provides accommodation, three meals a day, and tuition for just RM80 per month,' Liaw said. 'For families who cannot afford this, students can offset the cost with home-grown fruits and vegetables,' he added. Liaw has been involved with the foundation for nearly eight years. He has seen the students improve not only academically but also in their daily living conditions. 'It has brought me great comfort and joy. There are many such organisations like Starfish here in Kota Kinabalu. 'I hope this platform will raise more awareness and encourage others to get involved,' he said. He said children and women remain among the most vulnerable groups in society and need continued attention and support. The Starfish Malaysia Foundation was founded in 2014 by retired businessman Jimmy Lei from Sarawak. During a trip to northern Sabah, Lei saw schoolchildren walking for hours in the rain to get home due to the distance between their homes and schools. Disturbed by the sight, he pledged to help. He sold his business in Australia and used the proceeds to fund the first hostel at Kampung Talantang in Kota Marudu. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Senior singing competition to promote entertainment tourism
Published on: Friday, June 13, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 13, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Eliza (fifth, right) and Irene (centre) with the organising committee members. Kota Kinabalu: Over 100 people will descend here to compete in a senior citizen solo singing competition dubbed 'Voice in the Shadows – Our Concert'. 'Although this is a small event, I believe it has a big impact on the tourism industry,' said main organising chairperson Datuk Eliza Goh during a press conference at a hotel here. Advertisement She said such a competition could be developed into an entertainment tourism product to promote Sabah. 'We try to promote tourism in many ways, including through the music video of the songs, which will be released throughout Malaysia and can be viewed overseas,' said Eliza. The competition, which is open to Malaysians aged 40 and above, aims to foster friendship among those who love to sing from Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula, she said. 'We want to attract people from this 40-and-above age group to explore Sabah, as many still do not know much about the state,' she said. 'We want them to see that Sabah is actually quite modern now, and we have a lot of products to offer them,' she added. 'So as a Sabahan, I would like to do this as a contribution to the state in helping the tourism ministry attract more visitors.' She added that the competition also has the potential to boost domestic tourist arrivals, as the state cannot rely solely on international travellers. The competition will feature 50 singers, each bringing along supporters – about 50 in total – who are expected to take the opportunity to explore the state's tourist attractions. Co-organiser and Malaysian songbird Irene Tan said the event will be held on August 16 (preliminary round), followed by the finals on August 17 at the Putera Theatre Ballroom in Bukit Padang here. 'The competitors can select their own songs in one of three languages: Mandarin, Cantonese, or Hokkien,' she said. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew is expected to officiate the concert. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
