WWE Reportedly Making Another Major Change To SmackDown
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A new report indicates that WWE SmackDown will return to its traditional two-hour broadcast format sooner than expected. The show had been airing for three hours since the beginning of the year. According to PWInsider, the change will take effect starting with the July 4th episode. That holiday episode will be pre-taped on May 30th following a live Raw in Pittsburgh. SmackDown: Earlier Return To Two Hours This new timeline is earlier than what was previously indicated by USA Network's fall schedule. A recent announcement for a new series, "The Rainmaker," had it premiering in SmackDown's 10 p.m. Eastern time slot on August 15. That announcement confirmed the show would eventually revert to two hours. This new report now pinpoints the exact date as July 4th. Paul "Triple H" Levesque looks on during Night One of WrestleMania 40 at Lincoln Financial Field on April 06, 2024 in Philadelphia, Context For The Change On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the likely financial reasons behind the move. He suggested that WWE was probably not earning significant additional revenue for the third hour. "I guess the way they signed the contract, they must have given USA the option," Meltzer said. "Because if they were making more money on the deal, it absolutely would have been said at the investors call and we would have seen it." More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation A Temporary Expansion When SmackDown initially expanded to three hours in January 2025, WWE executive Triple H indicated the move was not expected to be permanent. Fans who felt the three-hour runtime was too long will now see the show return to its original length this summer. The return to a two-hour format will align SmackDown with the runtime of WWE's other main roster show, Monday Night Raw. Since debuting on Thursday nights in 1999, WWE SmackDown has had a varied broadcast history. The show famously moved to Friday nights in 2005, a time slot it held for nearly a decade across multiple networks like The CW and Syfy. After a brief return to Thursdays in 2015, SmackDown was reborn in 2016 as the live, Tuesday night SmackDown Live during the brand extension, positioning it as an equal to Raw. Its biggest move came in 2019 with a high-profile return to Fridays on the FOX broadcast network before eventually moving back to the USA Network. Is WWE Still Being Run by the Spirit of Vince McMahon?
Is WWE Still Being Run by the Spirit of Vince McMahon? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. WrestleMania 40 featured one of the biggest feel-good moments in WWE history. Cody Rhodes had finally dethroned Roman Reigns for the WWE championship. Triple H was now running the company. This was the beginning of a new era that would lead WWE into a prosperous and fan-friendly future. Advertisement Just over a year later, WWE has squandered much of that goodwill with the fans. The company is still making truckloads of money and is the clear leader in the pro wrestling world. But the public relations department seems to have taken an extended vacation, with several moves taking place that evoke the cutthroat spirit of deposed WWE leader Vince McMahon. R-Truth (Getty) When R-Truth announced on Sunday that WWE was not renewing his contract, many fans thought he must be joking. After all, he had just wrestled John Cena on Saturday Night's Main Event. Truth's fans and co-workers poured out their love and support for the beloved and versatile star, who had just spent 17 years with WWE. Then, the other shoe dropped. Carlito announced that he was also being let go, despite appearing every week on TV as a member of The Judgment Day. Truth is 53 and Carlito is 46, and they can't be employed as wrestlers forever. But the timing and optics are terrible. Also, with the release of Braun Strowman, Dakota Kai, and several other wrestlers last month, we seem to be back in the Vince McMahon days when wrestlers and staff members are expendable and dropped from the payroll just to please the WWE (now TKO) shareholders. Advertisement Another example of WWE acting like the old days its aggressive tactics in counterprogramming AEW pay-per-views. WWE scheduled three shows on the weekend on Double or Nothing and will do the same in July against All In Texas. When AEW moved the All In start time to the afternoon, WWE scheduled the Great American Bash head-to-head! It all looks bad. WWE management is not acting like the confident leaders of the pro wrestling world. Instead, they are putting profits before people and acting like they are scared of any real competition. We'll see if they can right the ship or whether they continue to waste the goodwill they have built since WrestleMania 40. It was such a treat to see him on Monday Night Raw. That's probably one of the best promos I've seen in my entire life. It was just so raw. To see him have a resurgence and the backing of the people is just a treat to watch. I don't even think the audience was able to grasp the moment. But him and me being a black man, I was able to see beyond just the promo, sorry I'm getting emotional about it. I was able to see beyond the promo, understand what he was trying to get across. So dude I'm so beyond elated for him.' With Omos staying with WWE for years to come, it would be exciting to see what is up next for him, and for the stories that make WWE a must-watch show. Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson reveals frustrating gut-health issue that took him years to fix
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson had a digestive issue that he couldn't kick — and no answers in sight. Johnson, one of WWE and Hollywood's biggest stars, opened up about his health journey during a recent conversation with the man who saw him through to the other side in Dr. Mark Hyman. The 53-year-old, after years of dealing with the gut issue, had a conversation with former agent and longtime business partner Ari Emanuel about it at the end of 2023. Advertisement 3 Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson speaks on his gut-health issues. The Mark Hyman Show/YouTube 'He's like, 'What's going on?' I said, 'I've seen doctors and I can't quite nail it. I can't quite fix it. It's in my digestion,' Johnson said during 'The Mark Hyman Show.' 'I feel great — and that's the odd thing — but I just can't crack it.'' Emanuel, the CEO of Endeavor and WWE's parent company, TKO, mentioned seeing Hyman, who practices functional medicine. Advertisement The two eventually connected for a virtual visit. Johnson admitted he knew nothing about functional medicine, which, according to the Institute for Functional Medicine, provides a framework to systematically identify and address the underlying processes and dysfunctions that are causing imbalance and disease in each individual. 'You said, very succinctly, 'I'm not going to treat your symptoms. I'm going to go deeper than that and treat the root cause of what's going on,'' Johnson said. 'And I said, 'I love that.'' Advertisement The treatment began in early 2024, with Johnson set to begin his 'Final Boss' run to WrestleMania 40 with WWE. Getting to what was holding Johnson back took some heavy digging, Hyman noted. They did blood panels and a stool test, among other things, to get to the source of the problem. Johnson was in for a grueling year with WWE commitments, the release of 'Red One' and 'Moana 2,' and filming for his upcoming movie 'The Smashing Machine.' 3 Dwayne Johnson attends the 'Moana 2' UK Premiere at Cineworld Leicester Square on November 24, 2024 in London, England. Getty Images 'That was at the beginning of 2024, and I was just getting ready to launch into what would become a nine-month workload for me — nonstop work,' Johnson said. 'And I was thinking, 'Holy s–t, how am I going to get through this with my gut issues? I'm not digesting properly.'' Advertisement Luckily, Hyman was able to provide Johnson some relief, finding the issue began after he took multiple rounds of antibiotics, which messed with the bacteria in his gut. He was missing Akkermansia, which coats the lining of the intestine and protects from inflammation and a leaky gut, Hyman said. 3 Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and John Cena fight during Night 2 at Lincoln Financial Field on April 7, 2024 in Philadelphia. 'And we made you this amazing gut health shake with 10-plus ingredients personalized for you.' Johnson hasn't wrestled in WWE since, but was the catalyst for John Cena's heel turn earlier this year.
