Two closed Milwaukee park-and-ride lots will temporarily reopen for Summerfest this year

Two shuttered park-and-ride lots will temporarily reopen during Summerfest weekends, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced. The northeast and southwest lots at Interstate 43/94 and College Avenue will open for Summerfest shuttle service throughout the festival. The lots were part of several that DOT officials closed in October 2024, removing dozens of people who were living in their cars and tents in the lots. Here's when the lots will be open and why they were closed last year. The lots will be open from 10:30 a.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Sunday throughout the following weekends, DOT said: June 19 to 22 June 26 to 29 July 3 to 6 Vehicles left in the lots after closure times may be towed, and the lots will remain fully closed after Summerfest, DOT said. Find more information here about Summerfest shuttle service. DOT officials indefinitely closed park-and-ride lots at College and Holt avenues last fall after an uptick in emergency calls from the area. Between July 1 and Sept. 30, 2024, there was a 42% increase from the year prior in emergency calls related to the lots, officials said. The calls included reports of theft, shots fired and drug overdoses, according to DOT. By early November 2024, DOT had began removing people who were living in the lots. Several people said they were given short notice and limited resources before they were forced to leave.
