New London-Spicer Toolcats engineer themselves a successful season
Jun. 12---- students this year took a metaphoric dive into robotics, designing a machine that could hang coral, gather algae and resurface by latching onto the bottom of a barge, all on dry land. The FIRST robotics season challenged teams to find solutions to their nautical-themed game while taking on other schools and their robots. The New London-Spicer Toolcats wrapped up another successful season, culminating with a championship in their division at the World Competition in Houston, Texas. Each year, teams are presented with a game consisting of a complex set of tasks that must be performed in order to score points and win competitions. The teams then design and build robots that are able to accomplish the presented tasks. This year, the challenge was Reefscape. The robots had to have the coordination and dexterity to place coral — represented by PVC pipes — onto a structure referred to as a reef. The reef is a large structure with several extending arms where the PVC pipe is placed. The robot was also required to collect green balls that represent algae and place them in a netted trough lifted from the ground. This trough, called the barge in the challenge, sat to one side of the play space. At the end of the challenge, robots had to attach themselves to one of three different elevation points on the barge and remain suspended to earn extra points based on the elevation of the robot. "We like to strategize based on the game and what we want to prioritize. This year, we kind of prioritized a lot of things — and our robot is really good at most things in the game and is capable of doing every aspect," senior Chase Marxhausen said. Competitions are broken into several parts. Each match begins with teams letting their robots first go on preprogrammed routes to complete as much as possible before players are able to begin controlling them. At each event, during qualification matches, groups of three teams are randomly placed together into alliances whose robots then cooperate to complete tasks. As teams advance into the final rounds, new alliances can be made. "One big thing that we look for is in the first 15 seconds with the autonomous mode — we try to look for an auto that the other teams have that correlates with ours so that we won't run into each other, and we can get the maximum amount of points that we can," sophomore team member Carson Stone said. After years of success, members of the Toolcats continued their work — earning rank 1 of 52 in the Great Northern Regional, rank 1 of 48 in the Minnesota Granite City Regional and being awarded Championship Division Winner in the FIRST Robotics Competition — Curie Division. "It is so much more than we were expecting and hoping for this season. We did think that it would be another good season. We were definitely hoping to get back to worlds, but anything more than that was just icing on the cake," Stone said. is a global nonprofit organization that hosts a variety of team-based robotics programs through schools and after-school activities. Founded in 1989, the organization's name FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. To prepare for competitions, the Toolcats constructed an arena in the high school where they could practice and test their robot. Donated and purchased supplies helped to construct the arena to the specifications of the challenge. Many of the parts the robot uses are built at the school. With a CNC machine that can cut aluminum, the team is able to customize their robot as much as they want. While New London-Spicer's industrial technology teacher Aric Harrier helps to guide students, he has been able to take a more hands-off role this year. "I used to be a lot more involved, but the more I've been pushing CAD (computer-aided design software), the faster the kids can grasp it. Once the kids learn about how to use the tools and how to find the parts they need from the internet, it's like an 'aha' moment and the sky's the limit," Harrier said. Harrier has been running the school's robotics program for 14 years, and the team has found success from their hard work during his tenure. But, according to Harrier, it isn't just the Toolcats' hard work that has gotten them to where they are — it is a community effort. The team has access to mentors, including engineers and a pilot, who are able to help guide them. Local groups and individuals also provide the school with supplies and funds. "Without the sponsors, this doesn't work. It is what really boosted us last year, too. We had an anonymous donation of $25,000. That really boosted us above and beyond. It helped us to go out and get the parts we needed," Harrier said. "This year, they gave another $21,000. That has been a big part." With the year wrapped up, the team is ready to surface from the season and prepare to build a new robot for next year's challenge.
