Brockton Police are investigating a shooting that left a 33-year-old man critically injured Monday, June 2, police spokesperson Darren Duarte said. The incident occurred shortly before 5:14 p.m. at 21 Torrey St., outside the Wingstop in the Points West Plaza shopping mall. The victim, described by police as being critically injured, was transported to the hospital for treatment. According to reporting by WCVB, a witness, who chose not to reveal their identity, said they saw the victim injured after the shooting. "I saw a man down holding his chest, and two Wingstop employees were trying to help him," the witness told WCVB. "I saw two people on a moped, they were running, and they looked like they were in a rush." Witnesses said the scooter took off near Belmont Street, and police initiated a chase after it, WCVB reported. The investigation is currently ongoing, Duarte said. Jake Malafronte, who turned himself in to police on Friday, June 6, was charged with assault and battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, according to the DA's office. Malafronte pleaded not guilty to all charges and was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for June 12. What witness saw 33-year-old man critically injured in shooting outside Brockton shopping plaza The shooting occurred on Monday, June 2 shortly before 5:14 p.m. at 21 Torrey St., outside the Wingstop in the Points West Plaza shopping mall. The 33-year-old victim was shot in the abdomen and initially described by police as being critically injured. His current condition is unknown. According to investigators, audio and video surveillance footage from a nearby business indicated that Malafronte got into a minor argument with the victim while the victim was on a phone call. Malafronte believed the victim had addressed him, the DA's office said. After a brief verbal exchange, Malafronte allegedly pursued the victim and shot him in the abdomen. An employee from a nearby business identified Malafronte as the shooter, according to the DA's office.
