Arsenal sent Sesko and Gyokeres transfer warning by Wilshere
Jack Wilshere has warned Arsenal that one striker will not solve all their problems ahead of new Premier League season. Arsenal finished second for a third successive season under Mikel Arteta, falling away to Liverpool last time out as injuries took took hold of their squad. The Gunners have made it a priority to address some of those deficiencies in the summer transfer window, with a goalscoring No9 top of their wishlist. Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres appear to be the two strikers under consideration by Arsenal at this stage, with the north London club said to have held talks with both. However, Wilshere believes his former club will need more than simply one marquee signing if they are to get over the line in the league next time around. 'It's not as simple as that,' Wilshere said, speaking ahead of this weekend's Soccer Aid. 'We've seen over the years, a nine helps of course someone to put the ball in the net, but everything else needs to happen around it as well. 'A nine will definitely help but it's not the answer to everything.' But Wilshere was also confident that Arsenal don't need to rip up the script and seek radical overhaul this summer as they search for an elusive league title. 'If you look at everything they've done, Mikel came in with a five, six year plan and he has delivered all of that,' he added. 'He's delivered it, we've got better, we've grown as a club but we haven't won anything. Mikel will feel that more than anyone. They just have to find a way. More Trending 'If you look at all the data, and I know data doesn't matter but it does if you're trying to build something. 'They've probably been the best team over the last two years in the Premier League- consistently, without actually getting it over the line. So they need to do that.' As well as a striker, Arsenal are looking to replenish their options in central midfield and are already close to finalising a deal for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi. The Gunners are also reported to be keen to add depth in wide attacking areas and have been heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid star Rodrygo. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Arsenal legend thinks they need more than just a striker to win the Premier League
Arsenal legend thinks they need more than just a striker to win the Premier League Arsenal legend Jack Wilshere has admitted that the Gunners need more than just a striker if they are to claim the Premier League title next season. Mikel Arteta's side finished second last season, for the third time in a row. It is great progress from where they were prior to the Spaniard taking charge, but now everybody wants to know if Arsenal have what it takes to go one step further and claim the title. Advertisement Speaking ahead of Soccer Aid, Wilshere admitted: 'They need to find a way to get it over the line. 'If you look at everything they've done, Mikel came in with a five, six year plan and he has delivered all of that. 'He's delivered it, we've got better, we've grown as a club but we haven't won anything. Mikel will feel that more than anyone. They just have to find a way.' Wilshere came through the Arsenal academy, and made his debut for the Gunners aged 16 in 2008. The Englishman stayed with the club for ten years, making almost 200 appearances. However, his career was cut short by injury and he was forced into retirement at the age of 30. Advertisement During his time at Arsenal, Wilshere spent five years playing in midfield alongside Arteta. On the team managed by his former teammate, he explained: 'If you look at all the data, and I know data doesn't matter but it does if you're trying to build something. 'They've probably been the best team over the last two years in the Premier League- consistently, without actually getting it over the line. So they need to do that.' Despite Arsenal's point tally last season, there was still a blatant gap in their squad. The Gunners do not boast a proper centre forward in their ranks. Many believe that signing an elite striker will be enough to turn Arsenal into a title-winning side. However, Wilshere insisted: 'It's not as simple as that. We've seen over the years, a nine helps of course someone to put the ball in the net, but everything else needs to happen around it as well. 'A nine will definitely help but it's not the answer to everything.'

Ex-Arsenal and Man Utd stars to go head-to-head for League One manager job
Plymouth Argyle are considering two former Premier League stars for their managerial vacancies after Wayne Rooney's replacement, Miron Muslic departed the club for Schalke. Jack Wilshere and Tom Cleverley are among the candidates to be interviewed for the vacant Plymouth Argyle job. Both the former Arsenal midfielder and ex-Manchester United ace are out of work having managed in the Championship last season Plymouth are in need of a new boss having seen Miron Muslic depart for Schalke after less than a year in the job. Muslic oversaw the side's relegation after replacing Wayne Rooney at Home Park. Rooney was sacked by the club in December after lasting 221 days of his three-year contract. The ex-Derby and Birmingham City boss managed just four wins and was relieved of his duties after a nine-game winless run put the team four points from safety. Muslic was expected to continue at Plymouth having given chairman Simon Hallett assurances he would lead the side's campaign to earn promotion from the Championship. The club had already moved to put personnel and structures in place that Muslic insisted upon. But Argyle have been forced into the managerial market and could go for a high-profile name once again with Wilshere and Cleverley in the frame. The former took charge of Norwich's final two games of the season as interim-boss after the Canaries parted ways with Johannes Hoff Thorup. Wilshere arrived at Carrow Road in October 2024 as a member of coaching staff. The ex-England international was previously in charge of Arsenal under-18s and parted ways with Norwich via mutual agreement after the team decided they wouldn't consider him for the permanent job. Cleverley meanwhile saw his playing career end with Watford where he moved into coaching. The 35-year-old was working with the Hornets academy before being named as interim head coach when Valerien Ismael was dismissed. Cleverly impressed enough to be handed the role on a permanent basis but lasted little over 12 months before being sacked last month. The United academy product remained proud of his efforts. "After the sadness wears off, I will forever have a feeling of gratitude and happiness towards the club and the place and people of Watford," he said. "To have built a connection with the players and supporters over the last 14 months has been special and the achievement I'm most proud about. "To see the development of our key players, young players and academy players, has been an incredibly rewarding part of my job and their progress in the game will always be something I look out for. We have used 11 players aged 21 and under this year and both they and the club will benefit hugely for this experience. "To maintain league position and points after selling key players last summer is something we should be proud of, as well as reflecting on why we couldn't sustain our play-off challenge will be something we should all review." Wilshere and Cleverley will also see competition from Des Buckingham. The 40-year-old was surprisingly sacked by Oxford United in December.

Jack Wilshere emerges as favourite for job to follow in Wayne Rooney's footsteps
Former Arsenal and England star Jack Wilshere is in the running for a new job in the EFL amid claims the ex-Norwich City coach will hold talks with Plymouth Argyle Jack Wilshere is among the betting frontrunners for the Plymouth Argyle vacancy and is said to be open to taking the job ahead of talks with the Home Park hierarchy. Plymouth are on the lookout for a new manager after Miron Muslic left abruptly last week. The 42-year-old was offered the chance to take over at Schalke and informed Argyle he would not be returning to lead them in League One for the 2025-26 campaign. A host of names have already been linked with the Pilgrims, who will be bidding to make an instant return to the Championship following relegation last term. And Wilshere has emerged as one of the frontrunners according to betting sites, just days after leaving his role at Norwich City. The former Arsenal and England midfielder, 32, ended the season in the Carrow Road hotseat after Norwich dispensed with the services of Johannes Hoff Thorup. But Wilshere his since left the Norfolk outfit after being told he would not land the job permanently. He could return to the dugout swiftly, though, with The Sun claiming that Wilshere and Plymouth are planning to hold talks over the Home Park vacancy. Wilshere is said to be interested in the role and, crucially, would likely accept it if Plymouth were to offer him the chance to become their head coach. If he were to take the job, Wilshere would become the second former England star to rock up at Home Park in 12 months after Plymouth appointed Wayne Rooney as their head coach last summer. Unfortunately for Argyle and Rooney, the Manchester United legend's spell in Devon was short-lived; he left the club on New Year's Eve amid growing fears over their second tier status after overseeing just four league wins. Muslic came in and, after steadying the ship, came close to keeping Plymouth up. But the manner of his departure has left fans and the club furious, with Argyle chairman, Simon Hallett, taking aim at the Bosnian-born Austrian in a statement. "After the season ended, and with rumours flying that Miron was attracting interest from other clubs, I called him personally and he assured me that he was 100% committed to Argyle. His colleagues had no indication that he wanted to leave," Hallett said. "Last Saturday, Miron informed the club that he wished to speak with Schalke with a view to joining them. Under his contract, a club wishing to speak with him needs Argyle's prior permission. We were unwilling to give such permission, but Miron informed us that under no circumstances was he going to return to Plymouth. Thus, we reluctantly gave the necessary permission. "By making clear his intention never to return, Miron gave us no choice but to move on. We could have insisted on the full compensation and gone to court to enforce his contract but would not have had his services as head coach, and progress on recruiting a replacement would have been blocked. "Rather than get mired in a protracted, and highly disruptive, process we settled for an amount of compensation that, while below the contracted sum, is a strong financial outcome for a League One head coach, enabling us to move on positively."

Arsenal hero Jack Wilshere named favourite to take Wayne Rooney's old job
Jack Wilshere has emerged as favourite to be the next Plymouth Argyle manager, following the departure of Miron Muslic. The Pilgrims were relegated from the Championship this season, finishing 23rd in the second tier, three points adrift of safety. Muslic could not save them from the drop but he did lead them to an unforgettable FA Cup win over Liverpool in one of the club's great days. The 42-year-old only joined Plymouth in January but he has now left the club, moving to Germany to take over Schalke. That has left a vacancy at Plymouth as they prepare for a return to League One and Wilshere has been installed as the favourite to fill it. Bet Victor are offering odds of just 1/3 (at the time of writing) that the 33-year-old will be Plymouth's next permanent manager, with the likes of David Wagner and Ian Evatt next in the betting at 4/1. Wilshere's coaching career so far has seen him take charge of Arsenal's Under-18 team, before moving to Norwich City in October 2024 as a first team coach. After the dismissal of Johannes Hoff Thorup in April, Wilshere stepped up to interim manager for the final two games of the Championship season, winning one and drawing the other. However, on May 24 it was announced that the England international midfielder would be leaving the Canaries by mutual agreement, with Bristol City boss Liam Manning expected to take over at Carrow Road. Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper said of Wilshere's exit: 'Jack made a big impact here in the time he was with us. He built great connections with our players and staff, and we're all sad to see him move on. 'We were all very grateful for him stepping in as our interim head coach for the final two games of the season, but we understand and respect his desire to further explore opportunities elsewhere. 'He leaves with our very best wishes and we'll follow his progress closely. I've no doubt he'll go on to have a very successful coaching career in the senior game.' Plymouth were promoted to the Championship in 2023 when they won League One and narrowly stayed up in 2024, finishing 21st. More Trending Wayne Rooney was given the job in May 2024 but lasted just 25 games in charge, winning only five of them. Muslic improved on that record, winning nine of his 23 matches at the helm, but ultimately fought a losing battle in trying to keep the Pilgrims up. On his departure for Schalke, Muslic said: 'My thanks go first to Plymouth Argyle, who made it possible for me to hold talks with FC Schalke 04, I'm very grateful to all those at Schalke for placing their trust in me. From the very first contact, we had open and honest discussions. 'Together with Frank Baumann, Youri Mulder, Ben Manga and Matthias Tillmann, we discussed in detail what Schalke are looking for and how I can contribute. We're determined to put that plan into action, and I'm ready to get to work with full conviction and passion.'
