Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest avoids injured list after 'scary' situation with finger

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Will Vest has avoided the injured list. The 30-year-old, who leads the Tigers with 12 saves, felt discomfort in his right pinky finger in the eighth inning Sunday, June 15, against the Cincinnati Reds at Comerica Park. He exited the game alongside a trainer after throwing a wild pitch. Advertisement But Vest won't miss an extended period of time. "I don't know what it was, other than I'm glad to get the news on the off day that everything checked out," manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday, June 17, before the opener of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "We'll go day-to-day and see what he can do for us, but I was very thankful that it sounds like we've avoided anything more major." NEW FACE: Tigers claim Carlos Hernández off waivers from Phillies to join MLB roster Detroit Tigers pitcher Will Vest (19) celebrates 3-1 win over Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park in Detroit on Friday, June 6, 2025. 125 seasons of the Tigers in our new book! Vest underwent tests after leaving Sunday's game. The Tigers evaluated the results. Advertisement It was positive news. "On the last pitch, I felt something zing a little bit in my fingers," Vest said Tuesday, just two days after the injury. "I lost a little bit of feeling in the bottom two (fingers). We were just being pretty cautious. We went to get some tests. Thankfully, everything was good." Vest has a 2.57 ERA with nine walks and 37 strikeouts across 35 innings in 32 games, racking up 12 saves in 15 opportunities. He has produced 0.9 fWAR, which is tied for 14th among 182 qualified relievers in the big leagues. The next best Tiger is right-handed reliever Brenan Hanifee, tied for 63rd with 0.4 fWAR. JEFF SEIDEL: Big improvement of Tigers prospect sign of something much bigger Advertisement This is Vest's fifth MLB season. His 26.6% strikeout rate ranks in the 76th percentile among MLB pitchers, while his 6.5% walk rate ranks in the 75th percentile. He also induces ground balls at an elite 59.1% clip, ranking in the 96th percentile. Vest is the Tigers' best reliever. "It's uncommon," Vest said. "You don't feel that on every pitch. There are a lot of emotions going on during that, but you have to do your best to calm down and not freak out." The Tigers employ a two-closer system with Vest and fellow righty reliever Tommy Kahnle, combining for 20 saves — Vest with 12, Kahnle with 8. Vest owns a 2.81 ERA over the past three seasons, spanning 153⅔ innings in 149 games. He has improved his performance in each of the three seasons, posting a 2.98 ERA in 2023, a 2.82 ERA in 2024 and a 2.57 ERA in 2025. Advertisement "There's a difference between being sore and being hurt," said Vest, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 while pitching for his alma mater, Stephen F. Austin. "As a pitcher, you learn how to pitch through soreness. When there's something different that you haven't dealt with in the past, then it can kind of alarm you a little bit. I think that's what I went through. I wanted to make sure everything was OK." Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold. Tigers Provide Update on Closer Will Vest After Injury Scare

Tigers Provide Update on Closer Will Vest After Injury Scare originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest gave up three unearned runs in the eighth inning before exiting Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds with a pinkie finger injury. Vest admitted afterward he had 'no idea what the extent of the injury was.' Advertisement Initial tests didn't reveal anything too concerning, and manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday on MLB Network Radio that he expects Vest to avoid a stint on the 15-day injured list, Jason Beck of reports. 'I'm expecting to have him available in some capacity and not go on the injured list,' Hinch said. 'Things can always change if we get more information. But so far, so good.' Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images© Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images Even before Sunday's defensive meltdown, the Tigers' bullpen had struggled this month, posting a 4.98 ERA — the fifth worst in baseball. Still, Vest and Tommy Kahnle have formed one of the more reliable back-end duos, with Vest carrying a 1.83 ERA and Kahnle a 1.50 ERA. Advertisement Losing Vest would have been a costly blow, particularly on the heels of news that rookie starter Jackson Jobe will miss the rest of the season following Tommy John surgery. Vest, who leads the Tigers with 12 saves, including each of the team's last three — remains day-to-day. Kahnle will likely be next in line for save opportunities if needed. Detroit Tigers claim Carlos Hernández off waivers from Phillies to join MLB roster

The Detroit Tigers have added to their bullpen. The Tigers claimed right-handed reliever Carlos Hernández off waivers Monday, June 16, from the Philadelphia Phillies. The 28-year-old doesn't have any minor league options remaining, so he will join the Tigers' active roster for the upcoming game Tuesday, June 17, against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Comerica Park. The 40-man roster is now full. After claiming Hernández, the Tigers need to make a corresponding move to create space on the 26-man roster. There are two clear options: placing right-handed reliever Will Vest on the 15-day injured list with a right pinky finger injury, or optioning right-handed reliever Tyler Owens to Triple-A Toledo. Vest suffered a pinky injury in the eighth inning Sunday, June 15, but the severity of the injury is unknown. ROSTER MOVE: Tigers designate John Brebbia for assignment, call up RHP Tyler Owens It seems like Hernández could be the replacement. He has a 4.98 ERA in his six-year MLB career, spanning 282 innings. In 2025, Hernández posted a 5.26 ERA with the Phillies, allowing 32 hits and 12 walks while recording just 23 strikeouts across 25⅔ innings in 25 relief appearances. The Phillies designated him for assignment Wednesday, June 11, for performance reasons. The one positive: Hernández averages 97.8 mph with his four-seam fastball. Hernández spent his first five seasons with the Kansas City Royals, from 2020-24. This story will be updated. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold.
