(AP Photo/LM Otero) ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Aaron Civale got a little wild in the right-hander's first start for the Chicago White Sox two days after he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers. Civale walked four of the first seven hitters he faced in a 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on Sunday. The 30-year-old finished with four walks, one off his career high, while allowing six hits and two runs in five innings. He threw 65 strikes and 39 balls. Chicago trailed 2-1 when he was replaced by Dan Altavilla to start the sixth. Advertisement 'Not the cleanest,' Civale said. 'It's been a whirlwind of a week. First couple of innings, just getting back out there and settling in and getting used to the new team, new catcher and all of the above.' The White Sox acquired Civale a day after he said he wanted to remain a starter — for the Brewers or another team — following his demotion to the Milwaukee bullpen. The Brewers made the move to clear the way for hard-throwing prospect Jacob Misiorowski to join the rotation. Civale (1-3) pitched a scoreless first inning despite three walks, thanks in part to Wyatt Langford's double-play grounder. The fourth walk ended up costing Civale when Adolis García scored on the first Texas hit — a two-out double from Ezequiel Duran in the second inning. Advertisement The Rangers made it 2-0 on Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly in the fifth, when Civale allowed three hits but struck out Jake Burger to end the inning with runners at second and third. 'Credit to him for grinding through that and getting through five innings,' said manager Will Venable, who was ejected after a couple of close calls didn't go Civale's way in the first inning. 'Not his sharpest day, but with these veteran guys that have experience, they're able to navigate tough situations.' All 123 of Civale's regular-season appearances in the major leagues have been starts. This is the third consecutive year he has been part of a midseason trade. Milwaukee got him from Tampa Bay last year. The Rays acquired him from Cleveland in 2023. 'It never gets easier,' Civale said. 'There's comfort in experience that you have, but every time it's new and it's a different challenge in itself. You're trying to make that adjustment as quick as you can. Was out there trying to compete and I wasn't filling up the zone like I would have liked to.' Advertisement Milwaukee sent Civale, who is eligible for free agency after this season, to the White Sox for first baseman Andrew Vaughn and $807,000 in cash. Civale said he had no issues with anybody in the Brewers clubhouse, or the coaches there. He just wanted to remain a starter, like he had also been for all 86 of his minor-league appearances. The outing against Texas lowered Civale's ERA to 4.67 this season, when he is making $8 million. He has allowed nine runs over 24 innings in five starts since a stint on injured list with a strained left hamstring. Civale threw just six of his first 19 pitches for strikes, and it was during that stretch that home plate umpire Marvin Hudson, the crew chief, gestured into the Chicago dugout. Moments later, he ejected Venable. Advertisement The second career ejection for Venable, a first-year manager, came on Father's Day. The first was on Mother's Day. Venable was a bit wide-eyed when that was pointed out to him. 'I was unaware of that,' Venable said. 'But that is an interesting coincidence.' ___ AP MLB:

Tim Elko returns to the Chicago White Sox, who place Lenyn Sosa on the IL with a right hip flexor strain
Will Venable referred to Chicago White Sox infielder Lenyn Sosa as a 'sneaky performer.' 'He's just a guy that was in there every day and (you) kind of just look up and he's among our team leaders in all categories,' the Sox manager said Wednesday afternoon. Advertisement Sosa entered Wednesday with a team-leading 55 hits. But he'll be out of the mix after going on the 10-day injured list with a right hip flexor strain. Sosa said the setback occurred while he was running in Monday's game against the Detroit Tigers at Rate Field. 'I started feeling it early in the game and as the game progressed, the pain was more intense,' Sosa said through an interpreter. 'Thank God it's nothing serious. I think (in) a week and a half, I'm going to be able to come back.' With Sosa sidelined, the Sox recalled first baseman Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte. Advertisement 'It's been a journey and that's part of the game,' Elko, 26, said. 'I've enjoyed every minute of it. You've got to enjoy the ups and downs. Being back here definitely feels great to be with these guys and just get ready to win some games.' Elko went 5-for-31 (.161) with three home runs and five RBIs in 10 games during his first stint with the Sox from May 10-22. He said his biggest takeaways from that experience included 'trying to stay within myself, not try to do too much and just kind of see ball, hit ball.' 'I think when I was up here at the beginning, I think maybe I was overswinging a little bit, trying to do a little too much,' Elko said. '(It's) kind of just staying within myself and just trusting myself.' Elko has been a force with the Knights, ranking third in the International League in slugging percentage (.596), fourth in OPS (.984), tied for fourth in home runs (11) and 10th in batting average (.315). Advertisement 'I felt really good yesterday, kind of got back in my groove and felt like myself,' Elko said of a 2-for-4 performance against Lehigh Valley. 'So glad to be back here today.' The Sox had Elko at first base and moved Miguel Vargas back to third for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. Vargas had been playing more at first after the Sox optioned Andrew Vaughn to Charlotte. Josh Rojas shifted from third to fill Sosa's spot at second. 'As we shuffle things after Sosa's injury, just kind of made sense to backfill some infield stuff, we have the flexibility to do it,' Venable said. 'We … were just talking about doing some iterations of our lineup where we do mix in Vargas at third base, just to continue to mix it in because it's such an important part of his game and he does so well. 'So now we have the opportunity to do that. We'll mix back and forth, but you'll see him at third base.' Advertisement The Sox hadn't locked down a timetable for Sosa's return as of Wednesday afternoon. 'Today is a big evaluation day for him, we'll set a plan at some point today and take it day by day,' Venable said. Sosa is slashing .274/.291/.383 with four home runs, 10 doubles, 17 RBIs and 15 runs in 57 games. He has a .320 average in his last 21 games. 'I was feeling very good (at the plate),' Sosa said. Related Articles He has had success with two strikes, batting .271 (29-for-107). That was the fifth-best average in the American League in those circumstances as of Wednesday afternoon. Advertisement 'Just be more patient in that situation, in that count,' Sosa said of his two-strike approach. 'Because usually I like to swing at pitches out of the strike zone. That's who I am, but in that count I try to be more patient and have a better selection.' Venable said Sosa has provided a 'really good performance and (has been) productive.' 'He's meant a lot to this team and solid defense at second base,' Venable said. 'We're going to miss him. He's been doing a great job, and hope he gets back soon.' The Sox made two more roster moves Wednesday, claiming pitcher Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Tigers and optioning him to Charlotte while transferring pitcher Miguel Castro to the 60-day injured list. Cusick, 25, has a 6.32 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 14 relief appearances this season between Triple-A Las Vegas in the Athletics organization and Triple-A Toledo in the Tigers system. Castro originally went on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Thursday) with a patellar tendon tear in his right knee suffered while covering first base on May 28 against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Chicago baseball report: The White Sox have a youth movement while the Cubs eye the trade deadline
The Cubs return to Wrigley Field following a three-city trip where they faced three of the best starting pitchers in the majors. They continue their stretch of 26 games in 27 days with a 10-day homestand that kicks off Thursday with four against the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Will Venable returns to face his previous team on Friday when the White Sox begin a three-game series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Venable spent 2023-24 on Bruce Bochy's staff as the associate manager. Every Thursday during the regular season, Tribune baseball writers will provide an update on what happened — and what's ahead — for the Cubs and White weeks before the July 31 trade deadline, the Cubs are still in information-gathering mode. Very few teams are fully committed to selling at this point in the season, but president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer and the front office continue to check in and monitor everything. Beyond that, it'll likely be a few weeks before trade activity starts to pick up. But when the market gets moving, expect Hoyer to be involved to improve a Cubs team that sits 14 games over .500 and currently holds a 4.5-game lead in the National League Central following Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. With how things are trending, addressing the rotation and pitching depth will be a priority for the Cubs leading up to the trade deadline. The loss of Justin Steele for the season and injuries to Shota Imanaga, Javier Assad and Jordan Wicks have tested the Cubs' depth. Imanaga is nearing a return from his left hamstring strain. He will pitch three innings in the Arizona Complex League on Saturday, and if everything goes well, his next step would be a rehab outing at Triple A. Assad (reaggravation of oblique strain) is still not expected to be back until after the All-Star break next month. Wicks sustained a hamstring injury and recently threw live batting practice with getting back to Iowa on the horizon. 'We've definitely taken a lot of hits there, and these guys have held up well, but it's a long season,' Hoyer said Wednesday. 'We're not even halfway through yet, so we have to continue to address that in all sorts of ways, whether it's the trade deadline, small transactions, and hopefully get some of these guys healthy.' Barring any other notable injuries, like season-altering ones on the position player side, the Cubs might also target an upgrade for the bench or a complementary piece. 'I do think, in general, that it used to be that you had some more transactions in the tank in August and September, and now you don't, so you have to think about that aspect of it,' Hoyer said. 'You have to play two months without those transactions. 'This group is a really good group. And it's not just on offense, it's on defense as well.' Edgar Quero provided an insurance run Saturday against the Kansas City Royals with a sacrifice fly to center in the eighth inning of a 4-1 win at Rate Field. The next day, the catcher extended a ninth-inning rally with an RBI single. Quero came through in a DH role during Tuesday's series opener at Houston, driving in two with a two-out single in the third inning of a 4-2 victory. Quero has been a consistent contributor at the plate since being called up from Triple-A Charlotte on April 17. He has a .262/.340/.308 with six doubles and 14 RBIs in 41 games entering Wednesday. Before Sunday's game against the Royals, Quero told the Tribune he was 'feeling pretty good.' 'I'm working, especially behind the plate,' Quero said. 'I had a really good day (Saturday) framing. Helped the guys, that was pretty good for me. 'I work every day, trying to do adjustments. Working with (catching coach) Drew (Butera) and doing early work. Just keep working and doing what I do.' Quero is connecting well with the pitching staff. 'He's been doing a really good job back there,' starter Adrian Houser said on Saturday. Quero is splitting time at catcher with another rookie in Kyle Teel, who was called up from Triple A on Friday. 'He's a great guy to work with,' Teel said on Friday. 'He's really smart and he knows the pitching staff well. We talk all the time and it's just great to be back with him.' Quero has enjoyed mixing with the younger players and the veterans. '(I'm) having fun every day,' he said. With Grant Taylor's arrival on Tuesday, the Sox have 10 rookies on the active roster — the most in the majors according to STATS. Pitchers Sean Burke, Shane Smith, Mike Vasil, Owen White, Brandon Eisert and Taylor, catchers Quero and Teel, and infielders Tim Elko and Chase Meidroth round out the list. Ian Happ felt he was getting close. The Cubs' left fielder hadn't been generating the power numbers as expected through the first 2 1/2 months of the season but believed he was getting closer as they started their three-city, nine-game trip. There were signs that had Happ feeling encouraged. Between the swings he was taking against fastballs and his plate discipline of staying in the strike zone was putting him in a good spot. Happ homered three times in the first two games of the Cubs' series in Philadelphia and finished the road trip with five extra-base hits, featuring four long balls. 'It's nice that when you're struggling, the team's still winning, still producing,' Happ said. 'When you're not getting on base for the guys that drive it a bunch of runs, that sucks. You want to be getting on base for those guys consistently. I know that's something that's tough when you're top of the lineup and you're not on base for those guys and (Kyle Tucker) is hitting with nobody on base.' The switch-hitting Happ hit his first home run off a lefty this season in Monday's extra-inning loss, tying the game in the eighth inning by taking Phillies reliever Matt Strahm deep. 'I feel like I've made a lot of really good right-handed swings this year,' Happ said. 'On the right side, it's been pretty consistent: walking, not striking out, and doing a really good job of hitting the ball hard. It's just been low, and so to get one in the air and see leaving that situation was great.' Mike Tauchman doubled with one out in the third inning Tuesday against the Astros. Meidroth followed with a walk. Both later scored on a two-out single by Quero. Tauchman and Meidroth keep finding ways to get on base at the top of the Sox lineup. Leadoff batter Tauchman came into Wednesday with 14-for-47 (.298) with six doubles, a triple, two home runs, eight RBIs and 11 walks in his last 13 games. No. 2 hitter Meidroth is 12-for-32 (.375) with a double, home run, four RBIs and seven walks in his last nine games. Overall this season, Tauchman entered Wednesday hitting .286 with a .414 on-base percentage in 20 games while Meidroth had a .293 average and .383 on-base percentage in 44 games. 'Just really consistent, quality at-bats where you have guys who control the zone extremely well,' Venable said before Tuesday's game, also including Miguel Vargas in that mix, 'so it's been nice to start your day as an offense with those three guys.' 'When he punched out (Kyle) Schwarber and punched out (Alec) Bohm, that's the Ryan Pressly that we're used to seeing, and I think he keeps getting better, which is fantastic.' —

White Sox are calling up Kyle Teel, No. 24 in Keith Law's prospect rankings: Reports
The Chicago White Sox appear to have some help on the way, as the club is reportedly calling up top prospect Kyle Teel from Triple-A Charlotte. Teel was scratched from Charlotte's lineup shortly before first pitch Thursday night, the move appearing to signal his imminent promotion. and were among those to report the news Thursday. A former Boston farmhand, Teel was part of a blockbuster trade in December that sent ace Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox. Now ranked as the No. 2 White Sox prospect and No. 24 overall MLB prospect in Keith Law's latest rankings, Teel has been a source of steady offense through 50 games at Triple-A Charlotte this season, slashing .295/.394/.492 with eight home runs, 10 doubles, 30 RBIs, 34 runs scored and seven stolen bases. White Sox prospect Kyle Teel is GOING OFF to start 2025 In two games, he's 5-for-9 with two homers and eight RBI 😳 — MLB (@MLB) March 30, 2025 In Law's May 29 prospect rankings, he praised Teel's development: 'Teel's season to date has been impeccable — not only does he continue to hit for average (.293) and get on base (14.7 percent walk rate, .397 OBP), but he's hitting for more power (.490 SLG, seven homers through Sunday vs. 13 in all of 2024) and the batted-ball data backs it up. 'He's even mashing against lefties in a tiny sample. I don't think he's much longer for Triple A or for this list.' The potential call-up comes at a good time for first-year manager Will Venable, whose club just defeated the American League-leading Detroit Tigers, 3-2, to earn a split of their four-game series. White Sox give Robert more room to work on his adjustments at the plate
CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox are going to rest Luis Robert Jr. for a couple days to give the slumping slugger more room to work on some changes at the plate. First-year manager Will Venable said he is planning to keep Robert out of the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday against Detroit.
