Epping, Melbourne: Woman's plea after car stolen by six teens before crash

A woman whose car was allegedly stolen by six teens who were seriously hurt in a crash in Melbourne's north has issued a devastating plea. Six teenage boys, aged between 16 and 19, allegedly stole a blue Haval from a home in Doreen on early Tuesday morning and were speeding through the vicinity of Church St in Whittlesea about 1am on Wednesday. A woman's Haval was allegedly stolen by a group of teens on Tuesday morning. Picture: NewsWire/ David Crosling Officers lost sight of the vehicle, but it was spotted again about 1.20am on Plenty Rd in South Morang with the assistance of the air wing. Stop sticks were deployed to top the teens in their tracks, while the air wing continued to monitor the teens as they sped through Epping. Emergency services were called to O'Herns Rd at the entrance of the Hume Freeway after the blue car rolled into an embankment and crashed. Police said they were not pursuing the vehicle when it crashed. Ronnie Michell (right) said she felt 'numb' when she saw her car on the news. Picture: 9News Hours later, the owner of the allegedly stolen vehicle, Ronnie Michell, saw the remains of her mangled car appear on the news. She said the sight of her crumpled vehicle made her heart drop. 'When I got shown the photo of the car, I just felt numb and sick,' she told 9News. The six teenagers, including three 17-year-old Whittlesea boys, two 16-year-old Hume boys and a 19-year-old Seymour woman, were seriously injured in the crash. Two of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle as it rolled into the embankment. They were all transported to hospital for treatment, where they remain under police guard. 'Six kids in hospital, six families worried about their children,' Ms Michell said. The family have urged the teens to think of others before going on joy rides. Picture: NewsWire/ David Crosling Her daughter Courtney Lister was also horrified by the teens' joy ride. 'I couldn't believe it, that it had gone that far, so to speak, that their so-called 'bit of fun', I assume is what it was, had to end so badly,' she said. Ms Lister issued a desperate plea to other teenagers looking for a thrill as it 'could have ended someone's life'. 'Hopefully, it is a wake-up call,' she said. 'But it's as though they don't care about any sort of consequence that could come from it.' Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Six teenagers injured in stolen car crash in Epping, causing major delays

Six teenagers have been seriously hurt after an allegedly stolen car crashed down an embankment in Melbourne's north, causing major delays for commuters. Police allege the Haval was driving at speed near Church St in Whittlesea about 1am on Wednesday and was spotted again at South Morang a short time later. Officers used stop sticks to try to stop the vehicle and continued to track it from the air as it sped through Epping. Emergency crews were soon called to a car rollover near the entrance to the Hume Highway on O'Herns Rd in Epping. Police say the car was not being pursued by police when it crashed. Police say five boys – all aged 17 and 16 – and a 19-year-old woman were travelling in the car. All six occupants were rushed to hospital with serious injuries – including one being flown to hospital – and remain there under police guard. Police believe the car was stolen during an aggravated burglary at a Starboard Drive address in Doreen on Tuesday morning. The freeway entry and exit remain closed as police investigate, causing significant congestion and delays of up to an hour. All city-bound lanes on the Hume freeway reopened just after 7am. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV/dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Local footy captain still fighting after ‘traumatic' facial injury

A local footy captain in Melbourne's north is still recovering six weeks after a 'traumatic' facial injury. Whittlesea's Xavier Dimasi was rushed to hospital during a game against Watsonia in the Northern Football Netball League on April 12. The longtime skipper was celebrating his 100th game for the club when he copped a big hit in the last quarter. He hasn't been able to work since, and still has weeks of recovery ahead of him. 'Xavier has been more than a player,' Whittlesea Football Netball Club wrote in a post on Facebook. 'He's been a leader, a mentor to our juniors, and a genuine role model on and off the field. His commitment to our club and our young players is second to none — always the first to lend a hand, offer a word of encouragement, or give back to the community that he loves. 'A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Xavier and his family with the financial strain of treatment and recovery. Any contribution — big or small — will go a long way in helping ease the burden and get our captain back on his feet.' The GoFundMe page details the full extent of the former Box Hill VFL player's battle. 'The accident resulted in multiple fractures throughout his face, a significant concussion, lacerations to his face and dental damage,' GoFundMe organisers Jaron Murphy and Augusta Dimasi wrote. 'The severe injuries required huge reconstructive surgery to Xavier's face, where six plates have been inserted to repair the damage, as well as a palatal splint to keep his jaw in place while his bones heal. 'Recovery from the traumatic accident has been extremely painful, drawn out and debilitating for Xavier, whilst placing enormous pressure on his partner, Brigid. 'As a result of the extent of Xavier's injuries and pain, he has been unable to work since the accident and isn't expected to return to work for a least another month. 'Brigid has been providing Xavier with full time care, requiring her to rely on her own sick leave to ensure Xav is cared for. With mounting financial pressure and all available leave utilised, Brigid has had to return to work, taking breaks throughout the day to care for Xavier. 'With medical and dental appointments continuing for the next few months, they are under significant pressure to balance health and the costs of recovery. 'Any show of support for Xavier and Brigid will be deeply appreciated during this time and will be used to aid Xavier in his recovery with ongoing medical and dental appointments, procedures and expenses.'
