Blow for Africa as Al Ahly beaten at Club World Cup
Palmeiras drew first blood in Club World Cup Group A with a 2-0 victory over Al Ahly on Thursday in New Jersey. FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Palmeiras nets second half double to beat Al Ahly
Brazil's Palmeiras scored twice in the space of 10 second-half minutes to beat Al Ahly of Egypt 2-0 in their Group A Club World Cup clash which was halted for 50 minutes because of fears over stormy weather at the MetLife Stadium on Thursday. Ahly's Palestine international striker Wessam Abou Ali headed into his own net trying to defend a free kick whipped in by Anibal Moreno, getting into a mix-up with his defenders to hand Palmeiras a 49th-minute lead. The first goal in the group was followed 10 minutes later by a swift counter-attack from the Brazilian club, expertly finished by Jose Manuel Lopez, who had come on at halftime. Immediately after the second goal, English referee Anthony Taylor took the two teams off the field while the public address announcer told spectators to leave their seats and seek shelter under the stadium concourse because of a 'severe weather threat'.

'We failed to create chances against Palmeiras': Ahly coach
Ahly slumped to a 2-0 loss in the Group Stage on Thursday, further complicating their position in the group. (AP) — Palmeiras benefited from an own goal by Al-Ahly's Wessam Abou Ali and secured a 2-0 win on a shot by José López before thunderstorms stalled play in the Club World Cup match at Met Life Stadium on Thursday. Both the Brazilian Palmeiras and Egyptian Al-Ahly clubs had opportunities after the restart from a 30-minute weather delay, but Al-Ahly could not overcome its defensive struggles. Abou Ali headed the ball into his own net just minutes into the second half. The goal started an offensive surge for Palmeiras, which broke away in the 59th minute for López's goal. He kicked a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner, with an assist from Maurício. Weather delayed the match a couple of minutes later. The approximately 35,000 fans in attendance were ordered to take shelter before they returned to their seats for the restart. Four yellow cards were handed out in the first half.
