KUCHING (June 18): Two open spaces — at Lorong Bayor Bukit 14 and Lorong F, Taman BDC — are undergoing landscape upgrading by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the National Landscape Department. In a statement, Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed appreciation for the funding support provided by the National Landscape Department and reaffirmed the council's commitment to improving community spaces. 'MBKS will continue to explore further improvements that strengthen community spaces, foster intergenerational interaction, and elevate the quality of life in Kuching South,' he said. He added that the council remains committed to creating a city that prioritises the health, development, and happiness of residents across all age groups through continuous infrastructure upgrades and service enhancements. On the upgrading at Lorong Bayor Bukit 14, Wee said it is being implemented under the Development of Living Environment Landscape initiative, and is scheduled to be completed within 16 weeks. 'The project officially commenced on June 11, and its expected completion is on Oct 1 this year. 'This initiative will see the transformation of the open space located within a residential area into a safe, welcoming recreational hub for the surrounding community. Wee (seated in an excavator) performs the symbolic earth-breaking ceremony for the project at Lorong F, Taman BDC. 'Key upgrades include the construction of a new footpath with proper drainage, installation of a children playset, fitness equipment, gazebo, concrete table tennis table, hopscotch game, solar-powered lighting, and new trees and shrubs,' he added. Meanwhile, Wee said the upgrading at Lorong F, Taman BDC commenced on June 9 and its expected completion date is set for Sept 29 this year. 'The works will include a new entrance pavilion and signage, upgraded walkways, modern playsets for children, outdoor fitness equipment for seniors, and the planting of new trees and shrubs — all of which aim to make the park more inviting, safe, and accessible to all users. 'This park has long served the BDC community, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it evolves to meet the growing needs of our children and elderly.' He added that public parks and open spaces play a crucial role in fostering community interaction, healthy lifestyles, and environmental sustainability. He also emphasised the significance of enhancing parks and open spaces in line with the council's commitment to the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and the promotion of an age-friendly city. 'Open spaces, such as theses ones, are vital to encourage active lifestyles, community bonding, and metal well-being, particularly among our children and elders. 'Through projects like these, MBKS is working toward creating inclusive, friendly, and safe neighbourhoods for all generation,' added Wee.

Father's Day: MBKS distributes longevity buns at Stutong, Kenyalang markets

Wee (fourth left) hands over packets of 'shoutao' to this group of fathers at the Stutong Community Market. — MBKS photo KUCHING (June 15): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) celebrated Father's Day today by distributing 'shoutao' (longevity buns) at the Stutong Community Market and Kenyalang Market. The initiative, led by Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, was part of the council's ongoing commitment to its Age-Friendly Cities programme. In a statement, Wee said the distribution of the buns served not only as a token of appreciation for fathers, but as a cultural reminder of filial piety. 'While Mother's Day is widely commemorated, Father's Day can sometimes pass quietly. Thus, it is important to give due recognition to the vital role fathers play in shaping families and communities. 'Many times, we remember our mothers on Mother's Day, but we must also remind ourselves that our fathers too have made countless sacrifices for us. Today (June 15) is a small gesture to honour their strength, love and commitment. 'MBKS hopes the act will inspire the younger generation to cherish and respect their parents in line with the Age-Friendly Cities programme, which aims to promote inter-generational care and stronger family bonds,' he said. Wee added MBKS remains committed to fostering a caring, inclusive and respectful city for people of all ages. community Father's Day Kuching South City Council wee hong seng

Wee: Don't rush SST expansion without public input

Wee stresses the need for a comprehensive assessment to determine whether people can sustain the expanded SST rates, which will take effect next month. — Bernama photo KUCHING (June 15): The government should engage in dialogue sessions with people from all sectors rather than implementing the reviewed and expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST) rates hastily, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. He stressed the need for a comprehensive assessment to determine whether people can sustain the expanded SST rates, which will take effect next month. 'Our economy is still well on its road to recovery, with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) remain struggling. Now that SST rates are to be reviewed and expanded, consumers and people at large will be suffering,' he told his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee pointed out that when the government increases SST rates, the increasing costs are eventually borne by consumers, particularly affecting those in lower-income brackets who will have to spend more to maintain their livelihoods. He urged the government to strike a balance between broadening its tax-based system and ensuring that people do not struggle to make ends meet. He cautioned that any tax reviews that could lead to 'spiral effects to the economy' must be done 'prudently and with the people's well-being at heart'. 'Is it timely to implement reviewed and expanded SST rates at this stage? Are our people prepared to face another spate of rising costs of living? Wee questioned, adding: 'You can take a stroll in the local wet markets where petty traders unanimously state that their businesses are not doing well.' According to the Mayor, while businesses with strong cash flow might manage the new SST rates, many MSMEs especially less established ones, 'may face risk of closure', potentially leading to unemployment. Wee advised the government against solely focusing on revenue-generating, urging them to consider the financial difficulties people are currently facing. 'If more and more MSMEs close down, we will be seeing more jobless persons, and unemployment can be a nasty issue. 'No doubt that we are not economists but we have been on the ground, well aware of what traders and people are being put through,' he said. As such, the Mayor expressed hope that the government will reconsider its decision to implement the reviewed and expanded SST rates next month. expanded lead reviewed Sales and Services Tax wee hong seng
