Wayne Gretzky loved Panthers' Cup win over Oilers but also admits one part didn't sit right

Wayne Gretzky shares honest reaction to Panthers' win over Oilers (Getty Images) The Florida Panthers sealed their second consecutive Stanley Cup in spectacular fashion, and Sam Reinhart's unforgettable performance in Game 6 became the night's defining moment. With four goals to his name, Reinhart powered the Panthers to a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers and etched his name alongside hockey royalty. Panthers' Stanley Cup celebration hits a sour note as Wayne Gretzky reveals one major complaint Reinhart's scoring spree not only clinched the Cup but also tied Wayne Gretzky's iconic 1985 record of seven goals in a single Final series. But in typical Gretzky fashion, the hockey legend met the moment with charm and humor rather than disappointment. 'My records this year are dropping like flies, Eddie O,' Gretzky quipped during the postgame broadcast to analyst Eddie Olczyk. His remark, filled with playful sarcasm, was met with a laugh as Olczyk assured him, 'You still got another 40 or 50, Gretz. You're OK.' — Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) While Gretzky's record may have taken a hit, his admiration for Reinhart was clear. The Panthers' forward accomplished this milestone while pushing through a Grade 2 MCL tear, an injury he sustained in the Eastern Conference Final. 'I can't really put into words what it means,' Reinhart reflected. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo 'It's something you never really think about... this one was even harder to overcome and be here at the end.' Two of Reinhart's goals came on empty nets, but the impact of his performance was undeniable. It was a statement game, one that cemented Florida's dominance and placed Reinhart among the elite. The victory made Florida the first team since the Tampa Bay Lightning's 2020–21 run to repeat as champions. But it was Reinhart's tenacity and historical achievement that stood out. As confetti fell and Florida celebrated on home ice, hockey fans witnessed a rare bridging of eras—where a modern-day warrior matched the mark of a hockey legend, and that legend, with a wink, tipped his cap. The 2025 Stanley Cup Final didn't just end with a trophy; it added a new chapter to the sport's most storied history. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, who once led the team to glory, had some strong words after the loss. The comments came right after the Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers in Game 6. But what exactly did Gretzky say that got everyone talking? Wayne Gretzky questions Oilers' goalie decision after Game 6 loss On Tuesday, June 18, 2025, the Edmonton Oilers lost 5-1 to the Florida Panthers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. The match took place at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida. Stuart Skinner started in goal for Edmonton after being benched in Games 4 and 5. He stopped 20 out of 23 shots, but Florida added two empty-net goals in the third period, making the final score look even worse. After the game, Wayne Gretzky appeared on Turner Sports to talk about what went wrong. Gretzky, who played for the Oilers from 1979 to 1988 and helped them win four Stanley Cups, didn't hold back. He focused on the team's goalie situation. 'Is this our goalie or not? They gotta solidify that,' Gretzky said. 'You can't go into Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals and switch your goaltenders. That's very rare that it's ever happened. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 유일한 공식 무료 SOC 게임! 설치도 없습니다! 경복의 바다 게임 플레이 Undo ' His comments pointed to the uncertainty the Oilers showed when they changed goalies during the most important games of the season. 'Is that your podcast you're listening to?' McDavid, Draisaitl exit interview interruptions derail proceedings

The Hall of Fame Room at Rogers Place can feel like a bit of a media fishbowl at times. Especially during the playoffs, when the glass on one side faces into the street in front of the iconic Wayne Gretzky Statue. Needless to say, it can be a bit of a high-traffic area with plenty of distractions for players brought in for question-and-answer periods. If it's not boisterous crowds gathering and chanting after a big win while trying to catch a glimpse of their favourite player doing interviews, it's firetrucks and ambulances racing down 104 Ave. with sirens blaring. But regardless of the chaos going on outside, about the biggest faux-pas a reporter can do is have their cellphone go off in the scrum, which draws immediate scrutiny from the rest of the media throng, as well as the player who was just interrupted by the ringing or reminder alarm. The running joke is whoever's phone went off would have to pay a fine, a la the NHL's Department of Player Safety. As was the case during Thursday's exit interviews, when Oilers captain Connor McDavid had to pause mid-answer as someone began playing back audio accidentally. 'Is that your podcast you're listening to?' he quickly quipped, before resuming his train of thought. Media aren't always the offending party, however. Before McDavid got in front of the microphone, his teammate, Leon Draisaitl, was up on stage during an unintended interruption of his own. 'Oh, God,' he said while moving to silence his own phone's alarm, cutting himself off mid-explanation of how the Oilers might have had the oldest roster in the league this season, but their core group is still in its prime. 'Got up early. Sorry, guys. I'll pay you guys after. Now where were we …?' Wayne Gretzky creates controversy, blames Oilers' Stanley Cup collapse on unforgivable goalie decision

The Edmonton Oilers' hopes for Stanley Cup redemption were dashed once again, and this time, franchise icon Wayne Gretzky is openly questioning the team's decisions—particularly their unstable goaltending situation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After a 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 6 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final, the Oilers were left facing not just defeat, but criticism from one of the most respected voices in hockey history. Wayne Gretzky calls out Oilers' goaltending chaos after second straight Stanley Cup Final loss Wayne Gretzky, who led Edmonton to four Stanley Cups in the 1980s, did not hold back during his analysis on Turner Sports after the game. Focusing squarely on the team's goalie rotation, he stated, 'Is this our goalie or not? They gotta solidify that. You can't go into Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals and switch your goaltenders. That's very rare that it's ever happened.' The Oilers started Stuart Skinner in Game 6, despite benching him in Games 4 and 5 due to subpar performances. Skinner stopped 20 of 23 shots, but the Panthers sealed the win with two empty-net goals in the third period. For many fans and experts alike, the indecision surrounding Skinner's role became a glaring issue—not just a symptom of struggle, but a sign of strategic instability at the worst possible time. Gretzky's comments reflect what many fans have been feeling: the team's inability to lock down a reliable netminder may be the Achilles' heel in an otherwise championship-caliber roster. Back-to-back Stanley Cup heartbreak raises serious questions for Oilers leadership This marks the second consecutive year the Oilers have fallen to the Panthers in the Final, deepening the sense of frustration for a franchise that hasn't lifted the Cup since 1990—two years after Gretzky's departure to the Los Angeles Kings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The legacy of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and this current core now hangs in the balance. With their window to win narrowing, the pressure is mounting on Edmonton's front office to fix what's broken—starting with the crease. Also Read: As Gretzky's pointed critique echoes through the hockey world, one thing is clear: championship teams don't just need stars—they need stability. And for the Oilers, that starts in net.

Edmonton Oilers' quest for Cup falls short again, what happens now?

Article content We know the vagaries of this two-month tournament but how can this be? How did Edmonton become The City of Slumped Shoulders and Florida become the State of Hockey, first with the Tampa Bay Lightning, now with the Panthers? Four Cups. The way the Panthers went about their work in this series, scoring early and often and making the Oilers chase, seemed on a continuing loop. They were way better in this Final, even if it went six and could be back again next spring because the Maple Leafs who gave Florida their biggest playoff scare, are losing Mitch Marner. Tampa is getting old, Carolina can't get past the third round, no matter what and Washington can't score enough. The Oilers? They rolled over Vegas and Dallas but were basically infield practice for Florida after the first two games that went to overtime. 'A well-oiled machine and I'm talking Florida,' said Wayne Gretzky, one of TNT's between periods commentators.
