The road had been temporarily closed to traffic since January Wright said 1,152 residents had signed his letter opposing the road being shut permanently. He added: "Blue Anchor and Watchet are both difficult to reach places... and local connectivity is so important."The permanent closure meant the council lost the responsibility to keep that road open. They wouldn't have had to find an alternative. "We're hoping the council keep the temporary closure... so they have a duty to review it. We hope they listen to the people and keep the road as it is."The council said the permanent order could be reversed if needed, adding it was "committed to exploring all potential sources of funding and is continuing to lobby for transport investment in the area". A spokesperson said: "Detailed inspections following January 2023 revealed further movement was inevitable and it will be impossible to safely reopen the road to vehicles without major intervention such as creation of an alternative alignment for the road and cliff protection and stabilisation measures at Cleeve Hill. "The council has completed cliff protection works at nearby Blue Anchor in order to ensure that an alternative route remains available for traffic to access businesses and destinations along the B3191."

Watchet quiz night raises funds for town's twinning society

Watchet's annual Twinning Society Quiz Night saw The Crotchetty Quavers triumph for the second year running. The event, held on Wednesday, March 12, at Knights Templar School, was an evening of friendly competition and fundraising. The Crotchetty Quavers, comprising West Somerset Brass Band members Jodie Watson, Mark Tranter, Michael Butcher, and Niall Watson, showcased their trivia prowess, continuing their winning streak. Quizmaster Kevin Bye guided the attendees through 10 rounds of questions covering general knowledge, local history, film, music, and French themes. Marilyn Binding, chairman of the Twinning Society, expressed her gratitude for the community's support. She said: "The quiz night is always a highlight of our fundraising efforts. "Not only does it help us prepare for hosting our friends from Saint Renan, but it also brings local people together in the spirit of fun and friendship." The funds raised from the event will be used to welcome visitors from Saint Renan, Watchet's twin town in Brittany, continuing a tradition that has been at the heart of the society since 1979. The Twinning Society is keen to involve more members of the community, especially younger participants, in their future activities. Marilyn added: "Twinning offers a fantastic opportunity to experience life in another country, build friendships, and be part of something special." The society is now preparing for the upcoming visit to Saint Renan in May. Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the group is encouraged to get involved.
