WTC 2025 Final: Mitchell Starc rewrites history in ICC event as first man ever but…
Australia's Mitchell Starc (right) and Josh Hazlewood put on 59 runs for 10th wicket against South Africa on Day 3 of WTC 2025 Final. (Source: X) Australia pacer Mitchell Starc had rocked South Africa on the opening day of the WTC 2025 Final at Lord's on Wednesday with his twin strikes with the ball. On Friday, Starc came back to haunt the Proteas again but this time with the bat. The Aussie left-arm pacer scored an unbeaten 58 off 136 balls with five boundaries to extend his side's lead 281 from overnight 218 to set Temba Bavuma's side 282 to win the title. In the process, Starc became the first batter in the history of ICC finals to score 50 or more batting at number nine or below in the batting order. The previous highest scores were by the West Indies duo of Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw, who scored 35 and 34 respectively batting at No. 9 and 10 position against West Indies in the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 final against England at the Oval in London. Mitchell Starc is such a Super athlete. Can bowl with 140+ speed for 10 overs and can also bat for hours, scoring a sensational fifty when the team needs it the most. He's built different out of this league. That Aussie mindset of Starc's deserves to be studied. — Johnny🦅 (@Swayamkrushi0) June 13, 2025 He is also the second batter after India's Shardul Thakur to score a fifty while batting at number 8 or lower. Thakur had achieved this feat the previous WTC Final in 2023 against Australia. Starc put on 59 runs for the 10th wicket with Josh Hazlewood, who was the last man dismissed by Aiden Markram. In the process, Starc and Hazlewood broke the Aussie record of highest 10th wicket stand in an ICC final. The previous best was between Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson, who had put on 41 runs in the 1975 World Cup final against the West Indies. Australia started Day 3 of the WTC 2025 Final on 144 for 8 in 40 overs, leading by 218 runs, Starc 16 (52) and Nathan Lyon 2 (5). Kagiso Rabada continued his brilliance with the ball, as he removed Lyon in the third over of the day, for 2. Hazlewood then joined Starc in the middle. Australia crossed 150 runs in the following over, after Starc pushed the ball towards mid-wicket for a quick single off Wiaan Mulder. Australia's lead crossed 250 in the 52nd over. 'The ball got a lot softer. It was a 50 to 60 over old ball. The sun is out, yesterday there was cloud cover. Hopefully, the sun will stay during the chase,' Rabada said going into lunch on Day 3. 'We need partnerships and be positive, looking to go out there and chase the score. No two ways about it. Will be great if we could win. Lord's is a special place, have enjoyed bowling here. I would've loved a ten-for, but would rather not have it and win,' he added.

WTC 2025 Final: Pat Cummins sends records tumbling on Day 2, equals Imran Khan with massive…
Australia captain Pat Cummins celebrates after claiming a five-wicket haul on Day 2 of WTC 2025 Final at Lord's. (Photo: AP) Australia Test skipper Pat Cummins sent records tumbling on another action packed day in the WTC 2025 final against South Africa at Lord's. Aussies ended the second day at 144 for 8 with an overall lead of 218 after Cummins picked up a six-wicket haul to power the defending champions to a 74-run first innings lead. Cummins claimed 4 wickets for 4 runs immediately after the lunch break on Day 2 of the WTC 2024 final to bundle out the Proteas for 138 in reply to his side's 212-run first innings total. The Australian captain's figures of 6/28 in 18.1 overs are the best-ever by any Test captain at Lord's surpassing England's late Bob Willis. Then Aussies pacer also became the eighth player for Australia and overall the 40th to claim 300 wickets in Test cricket. The 32-year-old is the fifth-fastest to reach there in terms of balls bowled. Cummins has claimed 300 Test scalps in 13,725 balls, surpassing West Indies legend Malcolm Marshall by three deliveries. The Australian captain's bowling strike-rate of 45.75 is the best by an Aussie seamer. Cummins also levelled with former Pakistan captain Imran Khan to become the joint 10th fastest to complete 300 wickets, reaching the milestone in 68 Test matches. Cummins has grabbed 136 wickets as the captain of the Baggy Greens. Only Imran has a better record with 187 wickets among the pace bowling skippers. 'Cummins does everything right — he challenges the off stump, uses the slope, and targets the top of the stumps, making batters play constantly. He now has over 300 Test wickets despite not bowling for five and a half years due to injury. That's extraordinary,' JioHotstar expert and former Australia opener Matthew Hayden said. 'The trio of Hazlewood, Cummins, and Starc might just be Australia's best-ever pace attack—even better than McGrath, Gillespie, and Lee—because they've bowled more together, in more combinations. Add Nathan Lyon to the mix, and it's an 'awesome foursome.' Australia did well to pull ahead despite pressure. South Africa fought back hard, making this a seesaw contest. It's been a fantastic Test match so far, and Day 3 promises more drama,' Hayden added. With the ball dominating so far, the #WTC25 Final is perfectly poised heading into Day 3 – a day that could decide it all 👊🏏#TeamAustralia skipper #PatCummins breaks down the team's approach & key strategies after the fast moving Day 2. #WTCFinal 👉#SAvAUS | Day 3, FRI,… — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 13, 2025 The Australian captain is only the second player from his nation to clinch 200 wickets in WTC history – he is the only pacer in the list with 206 wickets at 22.11 runs apiece. Cummins also has the best average by an Australian pacer in a calendar year, claiming more than 50 wickets. In 2019, he averaged 20.13 for his 59 wickets, bettering Dennis Lillee's feat in 1981.

WTC 2025 Final: South Africa need to show more intent on Day 2, says Matthew Hayden
Mitchell Starc celebrates after picking up a wicket on Day 1 of WTC 2025 Final vs SA. (Photo: AP) The WTC 2025 Final Day 1 ended on an even keel with defending champions Australia striking back with the ball after being bowled out for 212. Pat Cummins-led side reduced South Africa to 43 for 4 as 14 wickets fell on an exciting opening day at Lord's in London on Wednesday. Former Australia opener and new inductee to ICC Hall of Fame, Matthew Hayden believes that Temba Bavuma's side need to show more 'intent' on the second if they hope to remain on top in this title clash. JioStar expert Matthew Hayden offered a session-by-session breakdown after Day 1. 'I'm not entirely convinced it was Australia's day. South Africa won the first session, and Australia's comeback in the final session—nine wickets in all—was surprising. The conditions were odd: cloudy for half the day and sunny for the other half. Batting should have been easier, but it wasn't,' Hayden said. 'I'd say maybe 80% in Australia's favour, largely because of South Africa's lack of intent. That started with Temba Bavuma. As a captain, it's not just about bowling changes—it's also about setting the tone with the bat. He showed little vigour, and that's dangerous when facing three world-class fast bowlers in conditions that suit them. They need to come out with more intent on Day 2. Any signs of aggression—even those few boundaries late in the day—will help. But if they don't, Australia will come into Day 2 as firm favourites.' Proteas captain Temba Bavuma shows positive intent early on Day 2 💪 Catch the action live on our official broadcasters here ➡ #Cricket #CricketReels #WTC25 — ICC (@ICC) June 12, 2025 Taking cue from Hayden, the Proteas have started the second day on a positive note. Skipper Bavuma, who tool 31 balls to get off the mark on the opening day, survived a torrid spell from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood before opening up. But just when he was starting to look good in the middle while batting on 36, he gave a catch to Marnus Labuschagne in the covers off Cummins. Bavuma's knock was studded with 4 fours and a six. The SA skipper's wicket ended a 63-run partnership for the 5th wicket with David Bedingham. South Africans had put on 51 runs on the second day before Aussies finally got the breakthrough. JioStar expert Sanjay Bangar assessed the balance of Day 1 of the match. 'Clearly, it was Australia's day. They were on the back foot during the first session when South Africa bowled brilliantly — just 66 runs and four wickets in two hours. Then came a fightback through the Smith–Webster partnership. South Africa tried to claw back, but by losing four wickets later, they handed the advantage back to Australia. With the amount of seam movement on this pitch, the scoreboard doesn't reflect a par score. Australia is in a strong position,' former Team India assistant coach Bangar said. JioStar expert and former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn reflected on Mitchell Starc's impact with the ball. 'He's really quick through the air, and I certainly think he rushes a lot of batsmen. When you're a bit nervous and your feet aren't moving the way you want — just like Aiden Markram — he was caught in the crease, unsure whether to go forward or not. Starc had already gone past the bat a few times, maybe even beaten him on the inside edge once or twice. Then Rickelton decided he could hit it through the covers, and, the best Test bowlers in the world have this ability to pull their length back just slightly. A batter thinks he's got it covered, but then it kicks up, moves just a little more, finds the edge. 'That's what Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood have done so well over the years. But it's also about big-match temperament. He's done it before, he believes he can do it again—and when he does, it becomes a habit. He also builds a reputation. He gets the backing of his captain. We know how he's going to do it, and if you look at his wickets, they're all very similar.'
