Syracuse prepares for 'No Kings' protest
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — Despite tensions heating up from coast to coast, Syracuse Police and event organizers are planning to make Saturday's 'No Kings' protest a peaceful one. 'We are very fortunate to be in a very intimate, small, personable city where we don't seem to see a lot of flare-ups,' Steve Simon, an organizer, said. Sgt. Thomas Blake said that after a month of planning and gathering all the necessary information, they were ready to prepare for the nationwide event. 'There's nothing to indicate that there's any kind of plan for violence at all,' Sgt. Blake said. Syracuse Police expect over 1,000 people to attend on Saturday at the Solar St. parking lots near Destiny USA from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. 'We are prepared,' he said. 'We plan for these things. We reach out to the organizers…just to make sure that it's going to be seamless, find out what they need from us, and then we have a plan in order.' Sgt. Blake said the police presence is not meant to spoil anybody's time during the event. 'We're there to just make sure everybody's being safe and responsible,' he said. Simon is encouraging everyone in Central New York to attend to protest against President Donald Trump's policies on immigration. 'They're acting as if Trump is a king and that's really not an exaggeration,' he said. 'He's trying to act as if he is a king. So, this particular protest day is titled 'No Kings Day' and it's appropriate.' Simon also urged everyone to come out and exercise their First Amendment right to free speech. 'We all believe in the rule of law,' he said. 'You can be a Democrat or a Republican. Northern Lights could be seen in CNY Sunday night
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Central New Yorkers have another opportunity to view the Northern Lights Sunday night. With a geomagnetic storm affecting the Earth, this means the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, could be visible across the northern tier of the United States. One thing we will need to keep an eye on is how quickly our cloud cover departs Sunday night. Skies look to be rather cloudy still by 10 p.m., but should gradually clear as the night goes on. The best chance of seeing the Northern Lights looks to be after midnight west of I-81. To get the best view, it is recommended that you get somewhere well away from the influence of city lights in a completely dark area after 10 p.m. and look north. If you get a great picture of the Northern Lights, be sure to share it with us! The geomagnetic storm is a result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun. This is a process by which a solar flare creates a large suspension of plasma. Particles of that plasma then travel toward the Earth, down polar magnetic fields, and enter our atmosphere. Tips to reduce the risk of tick-borne infection
EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — Many are itching to get outside as the summer season quickly approaches. But that means people also need to have several strategies in their back pockets to keep themselves safe from ticks. Ticks hide in plain sight in the outdoors. 'In grass, bushy areas, dry grass, under the leaf litter, and sometimes in between bark as well,' Dr. Saravanan Thangamani, PhD, said. But there are ways to boost protection. 'At the end of the day, tick check is the thing we advocate for above all else,' Harold Nugent, a tick educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County, said. Before stepping back inside, check for ticks on the body from head to toe, and use a mirror to look at the spots that are hard to see. Ticks can travel indoors on clothing as well, making it important to check for the tiny terrors on each garment. But what happens if a tick bite cannot be avoided? 'Take blunt-ended tweezers…put it right under the tick, closer to the mouth part, and then gently yank it straight up, preferably, perpendicular to your body, to your skin, and then put it in a Ziploc bag with a moist tissue or towel and then send it to a lab,' Dr. Thangamani said. Dr. Thangamani is the director of the Upstate Tick Testing Laboratory. He said it is important to get a tick sample set out to a lab, such as his, to take early action against the disease. 'Tick bites induce allergies, tick bites induce itchiness…alright, that's non-pathogen specific, non-disease specific,' he said. 'However, ticks carry a lot of disease-causing pathogens that are transmitted to humans during the blood-feeding process.' SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — TCGPlayer workers, unionized with Communications Workers of America Local 1123, are preparing to lose their jobs after finding out eBay's motives to shut down the Syracuse-based location. eBay alerted Syracuse employees on Thursday that their operations would be consolidating to Louisville, Kentucky. But 100 soon-to-be-let-go workers, and their supporters, displayed a united front during a rally Tuesday afternoon. 'When we fight, we win,' protestors said in unison. 'We're coming for you, eBay.' 'They dropped this on the workers and only notified our union about five minutes in advance of the closure,' Ethan Saleriusm, former TCGPlayer employee, said. 'They didn't bring it to the bargaining table at all. We've been with them at the bargaining table for over 600 days.' On that fateful day, six-year employee Richard Vallejo remembers the morning starting like any other in the office. The donuts were in their typical spot on the breakfast table, but the termination email was out of place. 'We all feel like the floor has just been completely dropped out from below our feet,' Vallejo said. In the middle of the rally, employees cried, consoled, and supported one another as they realized they were about to lose their family. 'It is absolutely unconscionable what eBay is doing to them right now, and so I wanted to be here to support these workers and, importantly, call on eBay to return the generous tax breaks and public dollars they received when they acquired TCGPlayer,' Alexander Marion, City Auditor of Syracuse, said. Currently, the next step for employees is demanding compensation and respect before walking out the door for the last time during the summer. 'The severance that TCG is offering right now is frankly unacceptable and insulting,' Salerius said. 'The members want, you know, as much severance as they can possibly get because they've poured their lives into this company and they deserve to be compensated for that.' eBay also responded to NewsChannel 9 about allegations regarding emotional and physical abuse from trained security guards at the Syracuse location. 'We take the well-being and safety of our team members around the world extremely seriously. We are committed to ensuring that all eBay safety procedures are consistently followed and that our workplace remains respectful and secure for everyone.' Sharing a few points on background: We are conducting an internal investigation following recent claims to confirm that personnel followed protocol and conducted themselves in line with our policies. Security staff are not permitted to physically engage with anyone under any circumstances, and we have strict protocols in place to ensure their conduct aligns with these protocols.
