Shark Attack Happens on Major U.S. Beach
Hilton Head Island, a popular beach in South Carolina, was the scene of an unfortunate shark attack recently. According to WSOC-TV, a woman was airlifted to a hospital in Georgia after being bitten by a shark at the popular Hilton Head Island. "The woman was bitten on the leg at around noon at marker 24, which is at Sea Pines, and airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, according to ABC affiliate WJCL." The woman was first taken to Hilton Head Island Airport before being transferred to the hospital in Georgia. Another report mentions that the victim was a 12-year-old girl and that she "sustained a leg injury consistent with lacerations typically associated with a shark bite," per Kerry Breen of CBS News. This is the second time recently that a young girl was attacked by a shark. Off the coast of Boca Grande in Florida, a 9-year-old girl lost her hand after being attacked by a shark. Now, beachgoers are a bit worried with the attacks, with one person saying it is "nerve-wracking." The attack at Hilton Head took place at The Sea Pines Resort on June 17. Hilton Head Island attracts nearly 2.5 million guests per year, so it is a popular tourist spot for visitors coming to South Carolina. We're tracking the chance for an isolated shower this morning and a pop-up shower or storm this afternoon/evening. There's another low risk for a strong to severe storm, especially east of Charlotte, with damaging wind gusts and hail the primary concerns. Still plenty of dry time to get out and enjoy! Our high topped out at 90 degrees exactly, but it certainly felt a lot hotter. We are going to keep the heat and humidity around for the foreseeable future, with highs in the 80s and even nearing 90 by the end of the upcoming week. With the heat and humidity, there will be a daily chance for isolated showers and storms each afternoon. FORECAST: Hazy sunshine again today

To stay on top of changing weather conditions, be sure to download our free WSOC-TV weather app. FORECAST: Tracking hazy sunshine to start the day as wildfire smoke continues to filter through our skies. Thankfully, no impact on air quality as the smoke stays high in the atmosphere. The first half of the day will be quiet as temperatures climb to near 80 degrees. The second half of the day could feature scattered showers and storms as a weak system passes through the region. Timing for this activity will be between 4 and 10 pm. There's an isolated risk for a strong to severe storm with damaging wind gusts and hail, the biggest concern. This risk is much lower than the setup we had last Friday. Once we get through this evening's storms, we will finally dry out during the first half of the work week!
