Boxing: Welter champ Norman Jr. humbles Sasaki with 5th-round KO

KYODO NEWS - 5 hours ago - 22:56 | Sports, All Jin Sasaki fell to a fifth-round knockout defeat against WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. of the United States on Thursday, failing to become the first Japanese boxer to win a belt in the division under any of the sanctioning bodies. Second-ranked, 23-year-old challenger Sasaki was the first Japanese to fight a world title bout in the weight class since 2009 but was soundly beaten at Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo. Norman Jr. knocked Sasaki down twice in the opening round with his left and while the challenger had a more positive second round, the 24-year-old American had him back against the ropes in the third. Norman Jr. then reeled off a deadly left hook that caught Sasaki square in the face in the fifth to send his opponent straight to the canvass and to the hospital. The unbeaten champion improved to 28-0 in his career with 22 knockout wins, while Sasaki dropped to 19-2 with 17 KO wins and a draw. Brian Norman Jr. retains WBO title with absurd one-punch KO of Jin Sasaki

Rising welterweight standout Brian Norman Jr. continued his ascension up the boxing ladder Thursday with a crushing one-punch knockout. Norman moved to 28-0 as a pro (22 KOs) with a fifth-round KO of Jin Sasaki (19-2-1, 17 KOs) to retain his WBO welterweight belt. Sasaki entered the fight as the WBO's Asia Pacific and OPBF welterweight champion, but Norman floored him with a vicious left hook. Advertisement The win was the 24-year-old Norman's second defense of the title after a third-round TKO in March against Derrieck Cuevas in Las Vegas. He won the vacant belt in May 2024 with a knockout of Giovani Santillan. He currently is the youngest male champion in the sport. "It was a wonderful fight. I had a great opponent in front of me. You all seen he's got heart. That boy is not a slouch at all. I give nothing but props to him," Norman said after the fight (via Top Rank Boxing). "I wish I had a certain fight coming up (against Jaron Ennis). They heard 'B. Norm The Storm' is coming, and you know what happens when a storm is coming: You grab your boots and run. We shall see what's next for me." Check out Norman's highlight-reel finish below. Derek Chisora handed heavyweight title lifeline after WBO verdict on Joseph Parker trilogy

Derek Chisora has been handed a world-title fight lifeline, with the WBO green-lighting a trilogy fight against Joseph Parker. With WBO interim heavyweight champion Parker set for a return in September, a third fight with Chisora could be on the cards. Advertisement World Boxing Organisation (WBO) president Gustavo Olivieri revealed to Sky Sports that 'Parker may defend his interim title against any of the top-15 WBO world-rated contenders'. Chisora is now the WBO's seventh-ranked heavyweight boxer, and has seen his upcoming career prospects boosted by the organisation saying it would sanction a challenge to the New Zealander Parker. The Briton's next fight will be his 50th and likely final, with 36 wins and 13 losses next to his name to date. Frank Warren-fronted Queensberry promotions, who represent both Chisora and Parker, are putting plans together for the coming months, with the latter scheduled as the next mandatory challenger to unified champ Oleksandr Usyk, who defends against Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on 19 July. Advertisement Parker's representative David Higgins has confirmed that the 33-year-old Kiwi would be open to a third fight with Chisora, when speaking to Sky Sports. Joseph Parker is the Interim Champion and mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk's title (REUTERS) Parker has already beaten Chisora twice, with a split decision in 2021 and unanimous decision the following year. Since then, he has piled on victories over the likes of Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole. Chisora, now 41, has lost just once since being felled by former WBO champion Parker twice in succession, with victories over Kubrat Pulev, Gerald Washington, Joe Joyce, and most recently Otto Wallin in February. He last challenged for heavyweight gold in December 2022, when Tyson Fury stopped him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to retain his WBC crown.
