Incumbent Chesapeake Sheriff takes on challenger in Republican primary
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Republican primary for Chesapeake Sheriff sees incumbent Dave Rosado highlighting community engagement, while challenger Wallace Chadwick advocates for technological and training updates. Virginia Primary Voter Guide On the day of the primary, Rosado said, 'I have the right experience, proven leadership and the results. I've worked in the sheriff's office for 23 and a half years. I know every aspect of the office and the command staff. I've worked on a $64 million budget for years. So, I know how to run the office.' Rosado also emphasized the spirit of the office. 'We have so many volunteers as part of our mission statement. Community engagement. So we are known for, protecting our seniors, protecting our children. We are the school resource deputies in all the elementary schools. And that's a program that I've expanded since becoming sheriff. So that is a huge difference.' His Republican challenger Chesapeake Police Officer Wallace Chadwick told WAVY, 'So I'm the candidate that brings change. I'm a constitutional conservative. I believe in the rule of law. I believe in applying that rule of law. You know, it's kind of like having a closet. You know, you shove stuff in that closet for so many years. You know, the closet needs to be cleaned out every now and then.' Chadwick positions himself as an outsider ready to implement necessary changes within the sheriff's office. 'And that's what I'm looking forward to do. there's a lot of changes that need to be applied. Technology needs to be updated. Training needs to be updated. And those are some of the reasons that people are interested in my campaign. They're voting for me because I'm the candidate for change. I'm not from the system. I come from a different system in the police department, and, and that's what I'm looking to do is change some stuff for.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Identical twins are co-valedictorians in Hampton
HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Graduation for Hampton High School is on Friday, and those in attendance are in for a treat! This year, the honor of Valedictorian has a very unique twist. 17-year-old Nirmani Brahmbhatt is excited for her high school graduation this year. 'I think it's just going to be a really proud moment,' said Nirmani. Nirmani was named valedictorian. She has always been in a back and forth competition academically for the honor with another student at the school. 'We did have a friendly competition, but it was not, like, really intense.' That friendly competitor just happens to be her identical twin sister, Nishtha. 'We always had a really small gap between our GPA. So, it was always like, who's going to be one? Who's going to be two?' said Nishtha. Well, guess what? These sisters, born only 60 seconds apart, are both number one! For the first time in Hampton High School history, this year's graduation will have identical twin co-valedictorians! 'I really do feel like we're both inseparable,' said Nirmani. Nishtha and Nirmani are first generation Americans. Their parents moved to the United States from India. 'They've always been working so hard for like us to get where we are, and they also like working to be financially stable here. So, for us to be able to be valedictorian is kind of like, you know, we can now like from now on, we can support them and we can like have a bright future for them as well,' said Nishtha. Nishtha and Nirmani both plan to go to Old Dominion University. Nishtha's major is mechanical engineering. Nirmani plans to become a software engineer. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Program to 'light up' downtown area of Portsmouth to improve safety and visibility
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A new grant program is hoping to light up the downtown area of Portsmouth. The Executive Director of the Portsmouth Partnership, Michelle Wren, said the area used to be lit up. The organization is hoping to bring that back with their recently launched 'Safe and Secure Downtown' Program. It works in two ways and will be in place between the 100 and 700 blocks of High Street. First, they plan to light the trees in the median of the street. Then, they want the businesses that line this stretch of the street to join in too. 'They will get $1,000 if they upgrade their lighting as part of this program and their security cameras. We are going to give them a $1,000 donation towards the project, and we're also going to help them with city permitting and the downtown Design Council,' Wren said. Portsmouth Partnership is hoping this will all improve safety, security and nighttime visibility for properties in the High Street corridor. The area saw a bit of crime last year, so organizers want this to make a difference. Mayor Shannon Glover said the city will support this effort in any way they can. 'When people can see more, then they can do more. They can be happier, they can feel safer and then it kind of persuades people that don't want to do the right thing, not to show up,' Glover said. So far, Portsmouth Partnership has raised $40,000 dollars to go towards the program through several different sponsors. Now, they're searching for businesses who want to participate. Businesses like ELG Sweet Boutique are all for more lighting. 'It helps to draw more customers here, of course, but also some security that we need to feel safe for our employees, as well as for our customers that come in to visit us,' Tonya Perkins, Chief Operating Officer of ELG Sweet Boutique, said.
