The Design That Will Change BMW's Future
Radically different BMW's upcoming Neue Klasse lineup manages to be both completely new and utterly distinctive at the same time. The cars look characteristically 'BMW' while also carrying a cyberpunk-like, futuristic aesthetic. They're polarizing designs to be sure, but one can't argue that they look like nothing else currently on the road. Whether that's a good or bad thing is entirely subjective. The concept sedan that BMW has been showing off highlights bold, sharp lines, without a single curve in sight. The front end has a slight, shark-nose tilt to it, reminiscent of the BMWs of the 1970s, such as the 2002. The distinct kidney grille now lights up and is integrated with the slim, angled LED headlights. Out back, the taillights nearly span the length of the trunk lid but are split in the middle by a small panel with the BMW logo. These design elements seem to have persisted based on the test mule we've spied driving around. We haven't seen much of the interior, but the concept shots featured little more than an infotainment screen in the middle of the dashboard and a skyroof spanning the headliner. We can only hope that the screen situation will change for the production version, although we're fans of the skyroof. The front and rear are largely the same, although the front further embodies the BMWs of the 1970s with a thin, vertical kidney grille. The upcoming X5 also sports a few aerodynamic elements, like large openings in both bumpers, side skirts, and a small spoiler above the rear hatch. The cabin is also largely the same, right down to the skyroof, although the X5 concept images carry a more playful white and orange color scheme that reminds me of some 1960s automotive designs. From what we can gather in the spy shots above, most of these design elements will make it into production. With sharp lines, modern technology, and futuristic aesthetics, BMW is really looking to shake things up when these models are set to hit the scene in 2026. What will be interesting is not just seeing how its domestic competitors, such as Mercedes-Benz and Audi, respond, but also how international competitors from Asia and the U.S. will respond. BMW iX3 Coming as First Neue Klasse EV with High-Tech Package
BMW has revealed plenty of details about the iX3, its first EV from the brand-spanking-new line of Neue Klasse models. The ground-up architecture, set to be the backbone of BMW's new generation of vehicles, is the automaker's biggest project to date, encompassing the marque's leap in terms of vehicle platform, design, and technology. Watch More While the first modern Neue Klasse concept revealed was a low-slung sedan, the first production model from the new BMW family will be a crossover. Specifically, the new BMW iX3, which is based on the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X Concept. BMW has revealed details about the upcoming iX3, set to debut in Germany this fall. Here's a breakdown of what we can expect from the new breed of Bimmers. Advanced Tech for New Breed of EVs According to BMW, the iX3 will use an 800V architecture compatible with 400V DC charging stations. Batteries will be in a new cylindrical cell format, said to have 20% higher energy density than previous prismatic types. The new batteries touts up to 497 miles of range on a single charge based on WLTP standards. In America, this goes down to 400 miles based on the standards of the EPA. With the advanced EV architecture, the iX3 will be able to support up 400 kW of charging, enabling the addition of over 217 miles of range in just 10 minutes. With the new battery also comes a fresh Gen6 powertrain, promising improved performance and efficiency across all drive and vehicle segments. The iX3 will also feature the 'Heart of Joy' control computer, which can process data ten times faster than previous systems. Next-Level User Experience and Driver Aids While the supporting images don't include the cabin, BMW revealed what owners can expect inside the iX3. Front occupants will experience a combination of Panoramic Vision, a windshield-wide projected information, and 3D Head-Up Display, which shows navigation and driving data in the driver's direct field of vision. A central matrix-backlit screen will also reside near the steering wheel, while the multi-function steering wheel will have haptic and illuminated shy-tech controls. Apart from the tech-filled cabin, BMW also announced advanced driver-assist systems for the iX3, powered by a processor that's 20x faster than before and utilizes AI systems. These features include lane change warning, road priority alerts, safe exit, and assisted driving views. There's also a so-called Motorway & City Assistant, which supports hands-free driving, automatic braking at red lights, and roundabout assistance. Launch Happening in Munich This Fall BMW also introduces bidirectional charging with the iX3, with up to 3.7kW output for powering devices via its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature. It also supports Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), turning the car into energy storage to reduce costs and support the grid. A new wallbox will also be introduced, with up to 19.2kW DC charge/discharge capacity, and includes adapters for V2L use. BMW's Most Controversial M3 Is Getting Closer
BMW's Next M3 Will Bridge The Gap Between Present And Future Whether you like it or not, an electric M3 is coming eventually, and it'll have far more horsepower on tap than any combustion-powered M3 so far has offered. But like all future products, we don't yet know the exact specifics, and some of those specifics concern the styling. Fortunately, our spy photographers have snapped a pre-production development prototype somewhere in Europe (we don't know exactly where as the license plates are blurred according to regional privacy laws), and it seems to be drawing inspiration from multiple sources, both contemporary and future. 0:06 / 0:09 Tesla sales in Europe drop yet again Watch More Styling And Tech Will Be A Blend Of New And Newer From the front, it's immediately evident that the electric M3 will take its styling influence from the Vision Neue Klasse concept from the 2023 Munich Motor Show, which was, in turn, inspired by the general aesthetic of the color-changing i Vision Dee concept. While those concepts certainly look futuristic, elements of their design approach are already making their way to production. Just take a look at the latest X3 to see how BMW's design is shifting, but for more concrete evidence as it relates to the M3 sedan, check out the G90 BMW M5, which seems to be preparing to have its headlights shrouded in kidney-shaped illumination. This M3 prototype has a very similar shape to the current M5's rear end, and while the M3 prototype is still wearing placeholder taillight clusters, their positioning and orientation indicate that the production units will likely be very similar to those on its bigger, contemporary sibling. As some rendering artists have already suggested, the G90's design is likely meant to smoothen the transition to Neue Klasse styling, something that Autocar reports is imminent. Inside, we can see evidence of BMW's next-gen Panoramic iDrive infotainment system, which we got a preview of at CES 2025. Loads Of Power So Drivers Can Escape The Haters Don't worry – a combustion-powered M3 will still be on offer for many years to come, but BMW wants to offer a variety of powertrain choices, and those who opt for a silent take on the iconic nameplate, we know that BMW has previously said that four motors and up to 1,341 horsepower can be features of high-performance EVs, but an M3 doesn't need quite so much grunt and capability. The electric M3 is only expected to be revealed sometime next year, and with an on-sale date closer to 2027, that gives BMW time to widen the gap between the G9X M5 and the electrified M3, expected to adopt the ZA0 chassis code in sedan form and the ZA1 code in wagon form. BMW says driving pleasure will survive the autonomous revolution
BMW has made it clear the 'joy of driving' will remain a core value in its vehicles, even if they self-drive some of the time. Speaking at the Shanghai motor show, BMW's head of product, Bernd Körber, emphasised that future models will embrace advanced driver assistance. But they will continue to deliver engaging experiences behind the wheel. The Bavarian brand showcased its Vision Driving Experience (VDE) prototype. It is a quad-motor super-saloon based on the Vision Neue Klasse concept. While it is not going into production, plenty of its tech will turn up in the electric M3. BMW calls it 'the fastest test bench in the world', boasting 18,000 of torque, 1200kg of downforce and lateral forces of up to 3g. Evidently 98 per cent of braking operations can be achieved using recuperation. The VDE surprised onlookers in Shanghai with a run up a 55-degree ramp. Körber said that even as automation becomes mainstream, BMW will remain loyal to its brand DNA. 'While everyone is looking towards automation, why do we focus on driving? Because for BMW, it's core to who we are,' he explained. Körber argued that as cars take over more commuting duties, people will choose to drive for pleasure. Driving engagement, he said, will be even more important. 'In boring situations like city traffic and commuting, people will want the car to drive itself. But when they decide to drive for fun, they'll want a car that delivers,' he added. Körber drew parallels to China's growing trend of leisure motorcycling. There riding is seen increasingly as recreation rather than pure transport. The 'Heart of Joy' system, BMW's new power and dynamics management unit showcased in the VDE, is central to this strategy. It promises sharper, more responsive handling across BMW's upcoming electric range. BMW's design chief, Adrian van Hooydonk, reinforced this vision, stating that even highly autonomous models will leave control firmly in the customer's hands. 'We want our customers to decide when they drive or when the car drives for them,' he said. 'Our new Heart of Joy system will take handling to the next level.' The first production model featuring this new tech will be the next-generation BMW iX3, due for official unveiling at the Munich motor show in September. In an industry increasingly obsessed with turning cars into rolling lounges, BMW's Shanghai presentation served as a reminder that for some brands, emotional connection still matters. Körber summed it up: 'The worst thing we could do is follow every trend and lose our identity. That would not be BMW anymore.' BMW's stance is different and its future products still take aim at driving enthusiasts. While the industry rushes headlong towards autonomous driving, not all companies are embracing it fully.
