4-month sand mining ban in state to protect rivers

Patna: There will be no river sand mining in Bihar for four months till Oct 15. Even authorised leaseholders will not be allowed to extract sand during this period. The transport of sand outside the state is also prohibited. However, the mines and geology department has assured that there will be no shortage of sand during the monsoon ban. Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha, who also oversees the mines and geology portfolio, said on Sunday, "The sand mining will resume after monsoon. However, there will be no shortage of sand. I have asked the officials to keep a track on anyone demanding more than the prescribed rate and punish them." The department has stockpiled over 30 lakh cubic feet (CFT) of sand near river ghats and several stockists have been licensed to store additional quantities. Seized sand will also be made available for sale. According to an official from the department, only mining is restricted during this period, not the transportation of already-stocked sand. Adequate reserves are available at the secondary loading points across the ghats. Of the 457 river ghats identified for yellow sand extraction in Bihar, 161 were operational prior to the ban. During the prohibition period, the department's disaster management group will oversee operations to prevent illegal mining and maintain order. This annual monsoon-season ban is implemented to safeguard the river ecosystem and curb unlawful mining. Even approved leaseholders are barred from extraction during this period. "NDA, wish of people": Bihar Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha

Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 9 (ANI): With months to go for the Bihar assembly polls, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha has said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is the people's wish and a symbol of the state's development. He said that the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar were an opportunity to remove those who 'ruined' the state. 'Our leadership and alliance are strong, and there is no confusion anywhere. NDA is the wish of the people of Bihar, and it is a symbol of development. This is an opportunity to get rid of those people who ruined Bihar,' Sinha told ANI. His remarks came after Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan on Sunday announced that he would contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls. Speaking at a public gathering in Arrah, Paswan declared that his party would support the NDA in all 243 assembly seats to ensure its victory. 'For those who ask from where I will contest, I want to tell you that my party, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and I will contest on 243 seats to make NDA candidates win and strengthen the NDA alliance. My goal is that the NDA moves towards victory,' Chirag said. Making the announcement in Arrah, a traditionally weak region for JD(U), Paswan said he would not contest the election 'from Bihar but for Bihar.' He added that he would leave the decision of his candidacy and constituency to the people. 'I leave this decision to you (people). You decide whether I should contest the Bihar assembly elections, and from which seat. I will follow your decision,' he added. Paswan's recent announcement has ignited a debate about seat-sharing within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar. Paswan's demand for 40 seats, citing his party's 100 per cent strike rate in the last Lok Sabha polls, has raised eyebrows among NDA allies. The LJP is demanding 40 seats, while other allies like Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) are also seeking a handful of seats, while the BJP and JD (U) are reportedly eyeing 100 seats each. Paswan's aggressive posturing comes against the backdrop of the 2020 polls, where his party secured an almost 5.66 per cent vote share. This brought down the JD(U)'s tally from 71 in 2015 to 43, relegating it to third place behind the RJD and BJP. Bihar is expected to have its assembly elections later this year. However, the Election Commission has not announced the dates. (ANI)

Bihar Deputy CM slams Mamata govt for Trinamool's 'links' to Murshidabad violence

Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report, submitted to the Kolkata High Court, linked a Trinamool Congress leader to the Murshidabad violence. Speaking to the IANS, Deputy CM Sinha alleged that West Bengal has plunged into anarchy and accused the Trinamool Congress government of failing to uphold law and order. "Mamata Banerjee has completely lost control over the administration," he said. "Those who came to power through appeasement politics are now destroying the state's democratic and constitutional fabric," he said. The SIT report said Trinamool councillor Mehboob Alam was the alleged instigator of the communal violence that erupted in Murshidabad last month after the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The report, constituted under orders from the High Court, documented indiscriminate arson, looting, and destruction of shops and malls, primarily targeting the Hindu community. "The local police remained inactive and failed to respond to emergency calls," the report stated, adding that the violence was not spontaneous but organised and incited. Condemning the revelations, Vijay Kumar Sinha said: "It has been proved in a court of law. I want to tell Mamata Banerjee that such a mindset must stop. This act is against the Constitution and reflects a total disregard for democratic principles. The Trinamool Congress is a group that compromises everything for power." He further alleged that the rule of law in West Bengal has eroded under Trinamool Congress' watch and that the party continues to shield violent elements within its ranks. The SIT findings are expected to intensify political tensions between the BJP and Trinamool Congress, especially as national parties begin to prepare for the upcoming Assembly and general elections. Meanwhile, BJP leaders across various states, including Bihar, have begun to cite the report as proof of "constitutional failure and minority appeasement" in West Bengal.
