Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest avoids injured list after 'scary' situation with finger
Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Will Vest has avoided the injured list. The 30-year-old, who leads the Tigers with 12 saves, felt discomfort in his right pinky finger in the eighth inning Sunday, June 15, against the Cincinnati Reds at Comerica Park. He exited the game alongside a trainer after throwing a wild pitch. Advertisement But Vest won't miss an extended period of time. "I don't know what it was, other than I'm glad to get the news on the off day that everything checked out," manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday, June 17, before the opener of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "We'll go day-to-day and see what he can do for us, but I was very thankful that it sounds like we've avoided anything more major." NEW FACE: Tigers claim Carlos Hernández off waivers from Phillies to join MLB roster Detroit Tigers pitcher Will Vest (19) celebrates 3-1 win over Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park in Detroit on Friday, June 6, 2025. 125 seasons of the Tigers in our new book! Vest underwent tests after leaving Sunday's game. The Tigers evaluated the results. Advertisement It was positive news. "On the last pitch, I felt something zing a little bit in my fingers," Vest said Tuesday, just two days after the injury. "I lost a little bit of feeling in the bottom two (fingers). We were just being pretty cautious. We went to get some tests. Thankfully, everything was good." Vest has a 2.57 ERA with nine walks and 37 strikeouts across 35 innings in 32 games, racking up 12 saves in 15 opportunities. He has produced 0.9 fWAR, which is tied for 14th among 182 qualified relievers in the big leagues. The next best Tiger is right-handed reliever Brenan Hanifee, tied for 63rd with 0.4 fWAR. JEFF SEIDEL: Big improvement of Tigers prospect sign of something much bigger Advertisement This is Vest's fifth MLB season. His 26.6% strikeout rate ranks in the 76th percentile among MLB pitchers, while his 6.5% walk rate ranks in the 75th percentile. He also induces ground balls at an elite 59.1% clip, ranking in the 96th percentile. Vest is the Tigers' best reliever. "It's uncommon," Vest said. "You don't feel that on every pitch. There are a lot of emotions going on during that, but you have to do your best to calm down and not freak out." The Tigers employ a two-closer system with Vest and fellow righty reliever Tommy Kahnle, combining for 20 saves — Vest with 12, Kahnle with 8. Vest owns a 2.81 ERA over the past three seasons, spanning 153⅔ innings in 149 games. He has improved his performance in each of the three seasons, posting a 2.98 ERA in 2023, a 2.82 ERA in 2024 and a 2.57 ERA in 2025. Advertisement "There's a difference between being sore and being hurt," said Vest, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 while pitching for his alma mater, Stephen F. Austin. "As a pitcher, you learn how to pitch through soreness. When there's something different that you haven't dealt with in the past, then it can kind of alarm you a little bit. I think that's what I went through. I wanted to make sure everything was OK." Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold. Detroit Tigers fall as Cincinnati Reds rally for 8-4 victory, take series at Comerica Park
The Detroit Tigers couldn't figure out Elly De La Cruz all weekend. The Cincinnati Reds designated hitter went 3-for-5 with three RBI, including a knockout two-run home run in the ninth inning and gave the Reds an 8-4 win over the Tigers on Sunday, June 15, at Comerica Park. Advertisement With losses on consecutive days, following an 11-1 losing performance on Saturday, the Tigers dropped the three-game series to the Reds. More: Detroit Tigers designate John Brebbia for assignment, call up RHP Tyler Owens Tigers pitchers stopped the Reds for most of the game, but got in trouble in the eighth with reliever Brant Hurter starting off the inning and closer Will Vest unable to hold a 4-2 lead. The inning started with Reds leadoff hitter TJ Friedl reaching on a throwing error from Hurter, who then scored on consecutive singles from Matt McLain and De La Cruz once Vest entered the game. Vest then struck out Tyler Stephenson and induced a grounder from Christian Encarnacion-Strand that could have forced an inning-ending double play, but a bobble from third baseman Zach McKinstry kept the inning alive for the Reds. A sacrifice fly from Connor Joe scored McLain and tied the game at 4-4, while an RBI single from Gavin Lux scored De La Cruz and gave the Reds a 5-4 lead. Advertisement A wild pitch from Vest allowed Encarnacion-Strand to score, pushing the score to 6-4, before Vest left the game accompanied by a trainer. He finished with three hits allowed and one strikeout over two-thirds of an inning pitched. De La Cruz then provided the knockout punch with a two-run home run in the ninth inning, extending the Reds lead to four and nullifying the Tigers' seventh-inning rally. With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, shortstop Javier Báez led off the inning with a hustle double to right field. A failed bunt attempt by Parker Meadows and a pinch-hit strikeout from Kerry Carpenter threatened to strand him on the bag, but second baseman Gleyber Torres came through with the go-ahead RBI single. The next batter Riley Greene drove Torres in on a monster double to dead-center, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Advertisement Designated hitter Jahmai Jones, batting in the leadoff position for the third time this season, sent a solo home run to left-center field to kick off the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. It was Jones' second home run of the season, the first coming off the first pitch he faced in his Tigers debut on June 7. Torres followed with a hard-struck double to left field to set up the heart of the order, but the Tigers finished the inning with three consecutive outs and a 1-0 lead. Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz (44) receives congratulations from teammates after scoring in the fourth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit on Sunday, June 15, 2025. But the Reds quickly responded in the top of the fourth, starting with an infield single from De La Cruz that landed the speedster on second base on a throwing error from Long. A bloop single to shallow right field from the next batter Tyler Stephenson scored De La Cruz, marking the fifth run the shortstop has scored against the Tigers during the series (and later scoring a sixth run in the eighth inning and a seventh in the ninth). Advertisement Stephenson advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fielding error from Báez at shortstop and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Connor Joe. It was an uncharacteristically poor defensive game for Báez, who also flubbed a ground ball in the third inning on a Santiago Espinal base hit that could have easily been called an error. But just as easily as the Tigers defense fell through in the fourth, it prevented further damage with an inning-ending strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out play, with second baseman Gavin Lux striking out and first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand thrown out attempting to steal second base. Wenceel Pérez, who notched a double earlier in the second inning, brought the score even in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, his fourth of the season. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (25) hits a double in the third inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Comerica Park in Detroit on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Detroit Tigers run another bullpen game Left-handed pitcher Tyler Holton made his third start of the season in the opener role, pitching a clean first inning and giving way to bulk reliever Sawyer Gipson-Long in the second inning. It was Long's third appearance of the season and second straight in a bulk role. Advertisement He finished with two runs allowed (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts over three innings pitched. Right-hander Chase Lee followed with two innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and walking one batter in his appearance. Detroit is down to three healthy starters who began the season on the team's rotation: Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize. The team announced on June 11 that rookie starter Jackson Jobe would be getting season-ending Tommy John surgery, though it expects to get starter Reese Olson back by July 14. That has forced the team to play more modified bullpen games, with pitchers Keider Montero and Gipson-Long recently getting appearances in bulk roles. The strategy helped keep the Tigers in the lead on Sunday until the eighth inning meltdown from Vest. Advertisement The Tigers defense didn't always support their pitching on Sunday, however, with three errors in the game and the key bobble from McKinstry in the seventh. First Trust Portfolios Canada Announces Cap, Buffer and Dates of May Buffer ETF
TORONTO, May 16, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — FT Portfolios Canada Co. ('First Trust Canada'), announced today that the cap, buffer and dates for the next Target Outcome Period for the First Trust Vest U.S. Equity Buffer ETF – May (MAYB.F) (the 'fund' or 'May Buffer ETF') are as follows: The previous Target Outcome Period for MAYB.F concluded on May 16, 2025 and the upside cap for the new Target Outcome Period has been reset to prevailing market conditions. The fund seeks an outcome that provides investors with returns (before fees, expenses and taxes) that match the price return of the SPDR® S&P 500® ETF Trust ('SPY' or 'underlying ETF'), up to a predetermined upside cap, while providing a buffer against potential SPY losses. The fund is managed and sub-advised by Vest Financial LLC ('Vest') using a 'target outcome strategy' or pre-determined target investment outcome. If an investor purchases hedged units after the first day of the Target Outcome Period, they will likely have a different return potential than an investor who purchased hedged units at the start of the Target Outcome Period and the buffer the fund seeks may not be available. First Trust Canada believes a buffer against a level of losses can help investors stay invested during volatile times. Roanoke bookstore ‘Book No Further' seeking new owner
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Book No Further, an independent bookstore located in the heart of downtown Roanoke, announced plans to close its brick-and-mortar location on Market Street at the end of May, unless a buyer steps in. The store, owned by husband-and-wife duo Craig Coker and Doloris Vest, opened in 2017 and has operated at its current location for more than six years. They said they would like to see the location remain a bookstore and began searching for a new owner last fall. 'We really think Roanoke needs and deserves a bookstore, so we hope someone will take it over,' said Vest. Happy Trails Festival in Roanoke Valley this weekend Under current ownership, the shop operates with a specific focus on local authors and books highlighting the history of the Roanoke Valley and Appalachia. But the pair is open to new ownership, putting its own spin on the store. 'We're not quitting because we're out of ideas,' said Vest. 'We certainly have a lot of information we want to pass along to a new owner that they can take and craft into what they want it to be and keep serving the people of the valley.' Vest said that the retail book market has become a difficult one to navigate, particularly in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. 'We did not do in-store events for two full years because of COVID,' she said. 'When we went back to it, we found that our attendance was way off. It has never bounced back like we had wanted it to.' Ultimately, they were able to adapt, identifying new avenues for growth and success. The couple wants to travel more, and with their current lease period nearing its end, they decided the time was right to step away. Bedford County Fair looking to new future with multiple events and locations They will continue to operate the online store for a little while, as they continue to search for a buyer. As they explore this next chapter, they consider the past seven-plus years a major success. 'Part of the fun of the job is talking to somebody and saying, 'I know what you're going to like,' and getting a book in your hand that you didn't even know you wanted,' said Vest. 'And I think we've done that.' The store is offering a buy-one, get-one free sale on all used books, and a 20 percent discount off all new books through the end of May as it works to offload inventory.
